DLD 11/7/07 I Really Hope That's the Date
I think a quickie is in order.
Fight between George Clooney and Fabio, wherein Fabio tells Clooney to "stop being a diva."
haha.

I’m excited about the futures of Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes. Who isn’t? But please tell us – in layman’s terms – why you think they will post a 150+ ERA?
First it is useful to picture any statistical projection as one looking through an aperture (the aperture width and direction is set by the current conditions of interest - more positive indicators tilt the aperture ever so slightly above the horizontal). Close by the aperture (in the near future) the range of possible outcomes seems fairly narrow, but the farther away one looks the extreme ranges that represent all possibilities get much wider apart. Imagine that the wider range indicates that in the future, farther into the future, it becomes more likely that given the current vantage point (aperture setting), it is still reasonable to envision very positive outcomes (seen at the top-most edges of the range), and it is possible to see an ever wider range of possibilities that will leave the outcome grounded (poor outcomes).
O RLY?
That clears things up nicely.
haha.
Stavin Gavin is back! That's good news for the DLD, I should think.
If any of you have, links, I suggest you post them here.

Your crack Coast Guard at work:
Statement 1: Coast Guard officials said the incident was not serious enough to close the bridge at this time.
Statement 2: Petty Officer Third Class Michael Anderson said it was not yet clear whether there was any serious damage to the bridge tower or to the container ship.
US ports are safe. NOTHING could possibly go wrong...go wrong...go /boom.

What if mikeA posts a DLD, and nobody comments?
Hey, the OSU is only one preturnaturally
old-looking 18 year old giant away from making another hoops title run.
Like all right-thinking folk, I am rooting for Michigan with all my heart to knock off OSU's footballers. I want Oregon-LSU for all the marbles.

Maybe if we dress up as Florida?
I agree about Orrygun/LSU -- what a track meet that'll be, I hope.

I also agree about quickies.
Just for the record.

GO DUCKS!!!!!
I'd LOVE for OSU to lose to Michigan, and set up Oregon-LSU for the national championship.

Christ, what an aperture
MLB is a bunch of meanies....
If you bought some digital downloads of MLB games, they might not work any more.
"MLB Rips Off Fans":
Duh Headline Of The Century.
I don't want to jinx anything....
but the videos I downloaded still work. Maybe things are just slow to reach my area? Hell, I might have downloaded something different.
My favorite comment:
Thank God, being a Royals fan has finally paid off for once! We've had no games worth watching twice for twenty years!
Only videos before 2006
From reading more about it, it's just videos purchased before 2006.
Also, from how I understand it was set up, if you're still viewing, you're probably ok.
Shouldn't matter.
I've never bought MLB video but the way it's described in the article is that it works like this. Your video player has to check in with MLB (or more accuratly a company they were doing business with) and allow it to open. When it tries to check in, it can't because MLB removed the server.
I'd guess from your description you somehow got a copy without the DRM or something like that.
I'd just keep my fingers crossed and be happy.
I think when I purchased the videos...
I had the option of acquiring the license each time I watched it or keeping the license on my computer. Does that sound possible? I did try the videos on the original computer I downloaded them to, though, so I'll see if the vids work on my laptop when I get home.

I hope for your brain's sake you weren't just listening to the 10 @ 10

Well, I'm iPodding, as usual.

This morning
when I groggily went out to pick up the paper, I saw the top box tease about lounge food and the headline for the mayor's reelection and squished them together in my mind for the headline "Lounge Lizard's Second Act". Took me a minute to realize the Chron wasn't getting all snarky.
is anyone else having trouble with the HOF site
voting for Bill?
I didn't have trouble with THAT voting.
The 24 hour period
instead of actually daily cutoffs makes it difficult to max out votes.
Is it by email address?
You can borrow a few of mine. I can't be bothered to vote.
stranger stuff
today when I submitted the vote, I got a 404 not found
yesterday it just kinda crapped out
I gots plenty of addresses
Damn Internet People.
Anyone heard from xbx lately?
Are all your clothes intact today?

i'm here
i just haven't been reading AN for the past few days.
right now i'm catching up on the DLDs.
do i even want to read the front page? is there a condensed version somewhere?
Don't! Spare yourself the angst!
I wish I had (sage nods of assent all around).

Most people don't like it, but....
(FSU+mikeA) v. (Nico+Blez(I don't really have a problem with Blez))? Seems like you might enjoy that. And you wouldn't want to miss the masterful coup de grace delivered by 74mk.
wow
without having read it, i have a feeling i may be siding with nico and blez and not you and FSU. i hope you're ready for round 2.
Not sure what you mean, but
I thought the interview was excellent, if that's what you meant. I would find it distinctly odd if you sided with Nico and Blez on this one....
But really I don't want to drag that discussion in here. I have some good will that I'd rather not lose...
Really? You still have good will?
It's probably because you suck at your job.

i was wrong
i wrote that before i read the interview and commments. i just assumed it was specifically about the bradley story only*, not urban's general hackishness and whether one must provide a detailed list of every idiotic thing the guy has ever said every time he's criticized.
*bradley: at this point i think it's clear urban was right on that one and AN (myself included) was wrong. now ANers are down to the "bu bu but anonymous sources" and "slusser said she wouldn't have written it" arguments on that one, which means it's pretty much time to give it up. even mychael urban can be right once in a while, it's like foolshgame22 being right about byrnes vs kotsay.

the first rule of the front page ...
I just read the front page.
I sometimes feel like I live in crazytown with a few other DLDers and that reality has no bearing on the rest of the general populace.
Reading that thread made me remember why I stopped reading the non-interview/non-gamethread front page posts a long time ago.
Are there

This has been the HUGE buzz here for a few hours.
Foxsports.com is reporting a trade rumor that would send former CY Young award winner Johan Santana to the Dodgers in a deal for OF Matt Kemp. The Dodgers would also send pitching prospect Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw is regarded as the top pitching prospect in baseball. The Twins are looking for a young outfielder to possibly replace Torii Hunter. The Foxsports story reports sources close to the Twins say the offer is being considered by the Dodgers.
Wow, someone was ahead of the game....
But these talks are from the GM meetings this week....lot of smoke here apparently.

Robert Buan's Country Radio Show
I don't know if anyone else has heard about this, I guess it has been going on for a few months, but every Sunday night at 9 Robert Buan hosts a radio show called Country Fastball. In the past it has included: Jake Peavy, Jeff Francoeur, Nick Swisher, Tim Wakefield, Brad Penny, Justin Morneau, John Lackey, Brandon Webb, Casey Blake and JJ Hardy.
Blez' next chest move.

Trade action begins
Brad Lidge to the Phillies.
Astros get Michael Bourn, Geoff Geary and Mike Costanzo.
I like Bourn, but the other two guys are spare parts at best. Lidge has his issues but c'mon, when right he's flat out dominant.
Early knee-jerk reaction is the Stro's got hosed.
I agree it looks a little light
but they get a starting CF, setup man, and corner infield prospect with good power. If by 2009, you've gotten two starters and your 8th inning guy for Lidge (even if they're not high ceiling), I think you can call the trade fair.
Law agrees with you
http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog...
Ed Wade's reputation as a GM in Philadelphia was as a man who overvalued relief pitching, but in his first deal as the Houston GM, he gave away one of the better relievers in the National League for three spare parts.
Since Wade was Philly's GM, maybe this was to repay them for not telling the world what happened at the 2003 christmas party involving the Thai lady-boy.
Truth or Dare at the GM meetings
On Tuesday, each general manager stood up during their meeting and stated what their offseason goals were. Many mentioned specific players they were making available. The idea was suggested by Boston's Theo Epstein and Florida's Larry Beinfest, co-chairs of this year's meeting.
"Usually it takes a while to be able to reach all 29 other teams and hear what they're trying to do. This increased our efficiency tremendously. It saves us all a lot of time," Epstein said. "Some teams were specific. Some were more guarded."
Bet Beane was one of the "guarded" ones...
sounds like one of those mock-GM games
where everyone posts their trading block players into a forum so everyone can see
Since Beane lives on misinformation, he should have seen it as a goldmine opportunity to detail his plans to sign A-Rod and trade for Santana and Cabrera.
more from the GM meetings
Ken Rosenthal reports on his conversations with, among others, Billy Beane
Which way, A's?
A's general manager Billy Beane says a low-revenue team faces two choices every season: "Go for it or completely rebuild. There is no middle ground."
Which will it be for the A's in 2008?
Beane isn't sure yet, but says, "I can be nudged in either direction if someone wants to inspire me."
Kidding aside, Beane says he will choose his direction by the winter meetings, basing his decision largely on how well several players are recovering from injuries. Beane specifically mentioned third baseman Eric Chavez, right fielder Travis Buck and right-hander Justin Duchscherer, whom the A's want to move into their rotation.
If Beane opts for rebuilding, he can trade right-hander Joe Blanton and center fielder Mark Kotsay, among others. The A's nearly sent Blanton to the Dodgers before the July 31 non-waiver deadline, and they believe Chris Denorfia might be ready to replace Kotsay in center.
One scout compares Denorfia to Eric Byrnes, saying the two possess similar energy. Denorfia is better defensively, the scout says, but not as dynamic offensively.
Beane has gone from referring to the A's as a "small market" to a "low revenue" team. He also discards the "middle ground" option of reloading while still contanding, as he had said he was doing when he traded Huddy and Mulder.
Should we be worried that Denorfia is not considered to be "as dynamic offensively" as Eric Byrnes?
Billy channels Yoda.

that's news
we can trade Kotsay? to whom?
When I read Rosenthal columns, I hear his annoying nasal voice.
excellent catch on Beane's language
I'd also note the implication in using "low revenue": that franchise appreciation is not considered an appropriate source for underwriting salaries.
WE'RE ALL GONNA DYNAMIC!!!
"Dynamic": the protean word
It means whatever you want it to mean.
I think what Rosenthal means is that Byrnes will steal more bases and hit more homers. I agree with those assessments. I think Denorfia might well hit for a higher average and get on base more, but I wouldn't really call that "dynamism."
to think I was concerned
that AN would be really slow during the offseason
Yeah -- and now we're all in trouble with Poppy.
