Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Worth a Gamble?

Here’s something I’ve been a little puzzled about as I check in on AN:  Why isn’t anyone willing to mention signing Kenny Rogers?  The guy can’t lose at the McAfee and it’s not like we’d have to sign him for five years or pay him more than what Billy had originally set aside for Esteban Why-Didn’t-We-Get-Anyone-In-Return?

If we do end up trading Blanton to get younger and more talented offensively, we’d definitely need to fill a rotation hole. If we do end up keeping Big Joe, the idea of Justin and Chad starting 50 or more games can’t help but make even the most devout Athletic fan more than a little nervous.

It is really his age?  Because with our history (Milton, etc) it can’t be his attitude and last time I checked our rotation was a little lefty thin.

I've actually mentioned it before

and it certainly makes some sense given his past success at the Coliseum. (With him pitching and Polanco hitting here, you can pretty much chalk up an "L" in the ol' lost column before the game even begins.)

Two problems, however:

First, it's not clear that he'd be interested. He may only want to pitch for Detroit next season. I forget exactly where I saw this, but I definitely got the impression that he wasn't looking to move.

Second, he wasn't the same pitcher when he came back midseason. In particular the scouts were saying he had basically lost his curveball.

I heard on ESPN...

that Rogers will play for Detroit, or he's going to retire.   Unless you want throw a guaranteed 2-Year/15-20 Million at him.  Money always talks.

Two Words why not:

SCOTT
BORAS

As in, Roger's agent, who informed the Tigers that Kenny would "explore the open market" even after Kenny himself stated during the season that he'd either play for the Tigers or would retire in '08. That's class.

I'm not sure Beane has ever signed a Boras client, and this particular one will not be the first...sure he pitches well at the Coliseum, but he's also coming off major surgery in his age-42 season.

PASS.
