Best and Worst Uniforms in Sports

Well, after some good deep baseball discussion this week, I thought it would be fun to have something light for the weekend. I have a simple question: What are the best and worst uniforms in sports?

For me, the Raiders are the best. Love them.

As for the worst uniforms in sports, I think it has to go to the University of Oregon. For a team that is sponsored by Nike, they sure missed the boat on fashion design.

What are yours?

I really hate the (texas) Rangers Uni's

I just find it really hard to take a team that wears vest jerseys seriously.

What about the Rockies or the DBacks (old) then?

Purple? PURPLE? Come on.

Devil Rays have crappy uniforms as well...

No, you're right

Those are crappy too. Its just that when I think of those kinds of jerseys, the Rangers are the first thing that come to mind.

And their alternate jerseys should be purple instead of the cliched black.

Yes The "Devil Rays" did...

But the "Rays" new jerseys actually look pretty good.

And hands down, the Raiders have the best Uni's in sports.

No way

the Raiders have the best uniform in sports. I will admit I'm biased because I hate the Raiders, but I would take a ton of other Unis over the Raiders. I really liked the Chargers Powder blue Unis, as well as UCLA's. The Warriors "the city" design is also an awesome one, although it has been put aside this year. I would also have to say that the Classic St. Louis Cardinals uniforms are the best retro design. In addition, I don't think that the Ducks have the worst Uni in the sports realm because I think the Colorado Rockies purple uniforms are much worse.

Worst unis

Would have to have been any of the While Sox jerseys from about 1975 (the big wide collars and the Capri pant look) through the late '80's (the double knit pullovers with "SOX" across the front).

I have never liked Chicago, but when they went to a normal uniform, even I stood up and cheered.

The good, the bad, and the ugly

First off, I like the U of O's jerseys.  They are the school where nike was born and I think nike designs  a lot of stuff that they wouldn't for other teams.  I think they get extra points for not being so traditional.  I think the Yankee pinstripes are pretty classic.  So is NC's powder blue.  It always looks good.  And I agree that the vest uniforms are god awful.  I also think high socks need to come back.

The All Red Unis...

...that the Detroit Redwings wear are certainly up there among the best, as are the University of Michigan's football uniforms (NB: I have no connection with, or rooting interest in, any teams from the state of Michigan...but they do have nice duds!)

When it comes to baseball, the classics rule. Much as I can't stand them, the Yanks have great uniforms, as do the Cubbies, Cards, and Tigers. So do the Red Sox, though I preferred their old, drabber road unis to their newer ones.

And if we're gonna go international, Brazil's soccer uniforms are terrific as are New Zealand's Raider-like rugby uniforms.

Great call on Oregon's unis.

They are atrocious and I think the only people that love them must root for the Ducks.  Heck... I'm ready to like anything green and gold but those things look like an incomplete design at best.  Why do they think it's so great to have a million uniform variations?

Not a Raiders fan at all but those unis are sick in a good way.  They are simple yet pretty damn cool.

If Nike is their sponsor....

why do the uni's look like they were designed by Purina?  For all around ugliness, nothing can compare with the old Padre uniforms....with an honorable mention going to the Astro's of the same era.

Oddly enough, the best uniform has to be the Phillies old powder blue with the red stripe on the leg.

Sweet Uniforms.. the TV screen doesn't do them justice..
Yeah I went to Oregon for 2 years and now am in Portland.

I admit the yellow ones are a bit much,, but the all white or the black with green are pretty sweet unis. However seeing the on TV makes them appear much different. ( I guess ugly to the viewing audience)

But hey, my company I work for is based in New Orleans and they know how big of a Duck fan I am. They are sending me down there for "work" on Jan. 7th!

I've always liked

...the University of Washington's Purple and Gold motif.

I like the Cal helmet, but their uniforms are terrible, IMO.

The Raiders have the best helmets in football, and black looks good with everything. So, yeah, the Raiders rule, but they're almost too easy of a selection.

At the moment, I'm really digging Arsenal's home kit.  I know it's hard for many American sports fans to get used to the advertisements emblazoned across the front of European team jerseys, but the white Fly Emirates logo looks pretty clean against that red jersey. And during particularly cold games, the whole team where's black gloves. They look soooo cool! GO GUNNERS!!!

The Raiders Uniforms

are not stylish at all. Very plain. The Unis I like are worn by the St. Louis Cardinals. The worst unis are worn by the SF Giants IMO. The cream color leaves me cold.

by IM4Oakgal on Nov 11, 2007 6:57 PM PST reply actions

True, they're not stylish

But I love that they don't change them every year.  They convey an identity, much like Yankee and Tiger unis do in baseball.  The Tigers home unis are my favorites in baseball.

So it goes.

by jeepers on Nov 11, 2007 7:47 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know which uniforms are best...

...but I agree that Oregon football is the worst.

I'm not a fan of any football uniform where the top is the same color as the pants -- particularly for orange and relatively dark colors like purple and (especially) black.

Most overrated uniform of all time: The powder-blue San Diego Charger uniforms of the '60s/'70s.  They're OK, but maybe I'm just tired of Chris Berman drooling over them.

Baseball: I'm biased for the A's, of course, but I've always thought the current Mariners unis are pretty cool.  I even think the Angels' unis are OK except for the red A on red cap, or red text on red tops.  As a former scorekeeper from a press box, I like to be able to read the names and numbers.

Oh, and the Indians should drop that awful smirking Chief Wahoo logo entirely.  Use a "C", use that cursive "I" more, but please retire that logo for good.

Not to mention they have the 2nd ugliest field

in football next to Boise St.  It's like they are from a different planet and have a completely different idea of what is cool everywhere but in OR.  Sorry Duck fans but the winning should be enough to get you through the feelings most people have about your "designer" uniforms.

The best unis

used to be the San Jose Sharks.  Last year's jerseys were just awesome.  I can't stand their new uniforms though.  Just ugly and busy.  Who thought adding orange to a teal uni was a good idea?

I'd say the Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers are probably two of my favorites.

The worst?  Hard to say, but I think orange is one of the worst colors for uniforms and both the Giants and Flyers use them.  The Eagles throwback unis from earlier this season were pretty putrid.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Nov 11, 2007 7:46 PM PST reply actions

Actually...

I kinda like the D-ray jerseys. The sleeveless tops look especially good with 3/4 or long sleeves. While creating a player in MLB The Show on PS2, I actually chose to play for the D-rays because of their jerseys (...and because it was easy to crack the pro roster).

As for bests, I like the Dallas Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns.
And for worsts, I'd go with the Miami Dolphins. Bright greenish teal and...crossing-guard-orange? Were they TRYING to come up with the most nauseating color combination ever?

MLB uniforms are pretty unspectacular to me...there really aren't many differences between baseball's "classics" and their "new flashy" ones. Although I will say that, as far as fan apparel goes, It's pretty tough to match any A's garb with anything other than...other A's stuff. Which sucks.

Perpetually batting in the 8-hole. And loving it.

Mid 70's Cleveland Indians

I'm actually suprised that noone has mentioned the mid 70's Cleveland Indians fire engine red uniforms.  Another classic uniform (and already mentioned) is the Houston Astro "rainbow" uniforms.  Some of these NFL Throwback uniforms are pretty putrid.  Did anyone see the Philadelphia Eagles day glo yellow uniform they wore a couple of weeks ago?  Made the Oregon Ducks uniforms look downright tame.

As to the best uniforms, I like the classic look.  The A's home whites and road greys are classic uniforms.  Get rid of the colored tops, they make the team look like beer league softball players.

Throwback favorites

I really like the Dallas Cowboys throwback uniforms with the big star on the sleeve, and I really like when the A's wear the throwback yellow tops!  The worst are the Astros striped jerseys (my junior college softball team actually had a similar top, which I hated) and the Chicago White Sox in shorts.

I'm pretty biased toward . . .

. . . the classic look.  As already mentioned, things that endure convey a solidness, a sense of certainty about who you are, your place in the world.  And, though I hate to admit it, some of the best, classic unis are worn by teams I REALLY don't like: Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Cardinals and Tigers in baseball;  Cowboys, Colts, Browns, Steelers and, yes, Raiders in football.  The Jets are a tough call:  on the plus side, they've never changed--they still look like Joe Namath and Matt Snell.  On the minus side:  they've always looked a little rinky-dink (distinctive, I'll grant you, but rinky-dink nevertheless).

by camperdog on Nov 12, 2007 10:44 AM PST reply actions

Silver and Black is classic

I'm diggin' baseballgirl for saying what I am thinking. I know I am a very much biased about my love for the Raiders, but I do still think we have the best uniform.

I've always enjoyed the way keeping the uniform unchanged in appearance does do honor to the past.

Raiders are throwback everyday and though the team is down now, wearing a Raiders jersey means something.

There are a few teams out there like that. It is like a Notre Dame helmet -- no matter how you cut it, that still means something.

The worst uniform in sports:

Hull City Tigers (I just found this one!)

Worst sponsor to ruin a perfectly good uniform:

Portsmouth FC
