Who should I get on my new A's jersey?
Sooo I'm going to order my new A's jersey soon. I'm going white, authentic, and I think I'm going to go with a CoolBase jersey just because they're kind of cool (unless anyone has had a problem with them?)
The question is... who do I want on the back? And I do want someone on the back, I just don't know what direction to go in.
From a list of 6 players, which I then whittled down to 3, which I then whittled down to 2, I am left with a choice between Rich Harden and Daric Barton.
Harden - I've been a huge fan of his since he entered the big leagues. I've got a couple autographs and a picture with the guy. He's Canadian, he's an A, and he's a fantastic pitcher - if he's healthy, which is a big if.
Barton - He's young and he'll be here for awhile, and I've got his autograph too. I got to be at his first major league game, and witnessed his first hit. And I'd be one of the first people to get a Barton jersey.
The question is, who do I go with?
Harden has the risk of being injured forever and maybe being traded because the A's see his contract as huge for a guy who never pitches... and pending his situation, may never will.
As for Barton, it's a bit of a risk because he only had a fantastic month. He could tank it in spring training, get cut, play badly in the minors, and never play another game in the big leagues. It's unlikely, but it scares me.
So... which one do you go with? It's not the end of the world if the worst comes to worst with either player - I know the means of getting the jersey re-crested, and I work at a jersey store so it's convenient and I know how it works - and I get a discount.
I just want it to go well.

hmm
i'd probably pick barton over harden just because i have a harden tshirt and it's been all dusty since he's been on the DL for what seems like the last three seasons.
but i'd wait to get barton's jersey in case he gets traded in the offseason!
Everyone knows my view on this
If you're going to get a player jersey, you have three options.
a) Your own last name
b) your nickname
c) HOF or Famous A's player
No matter who you get, if that player is a current player, its likely you will regret it. Barton, for example, could be traded or be a bust. Harden might be injured forever, or get traded himself, or worse still, he could leave for FA, after being injured his entire A's career, and then help Boston or New York win the WS.
I was going to do that, but...
...the thought of having 'Fingers' on my back just cast too many aspersions.
Oh man....
A and B are so far off base. Both are unacceptable.

"McFood" would look awesome on an A's jersey!
But "OaktownPower", not so much. :)
Especially if it's YOUR jersey..
Haha.....No doubt there

Do NOT get your own name on the jersey
Moreover, if you do get a player who ends up being traded, let go, or never plays again (Harden) it sort of puts a time stamp on when you were a fan so when the A's eventually do win a World Series people will know you are not a bandwagon fan.
Just my thoughts.

I agree with you
100% dude, I think Jersey's are just like Band Shirts, you should get them in the moment. They mean so much more later anyway. And the older they are, the cooler you are. Old School pride is always devastating.
Current-ish players can still be cool
I love to see people sporting "Hudson" t-shirts or whatever: yes, it dates you, but it also shows you've been around at least since the period in question. If you have a player who makes a contribution, people should remember him, even many years later; if they don't, you know you've been a fan longer, which is sure not a bad thing!

True, indeed.
That said, the cool factor for a Barton jersey if you get one before he blows up or becomes an Oakland favorite for real is top shelf. I still think one of the coolest jerseys I've seen at the park in the last couple of years was a yellow (70's) #49 Scutaro jersey. Signed. You know that girl wasn't late to the bandwagon.
Another that brought a smile to my face: Lansford. Don't see many of those, but respect to those that go that direction. I don't see a lot of Cap'n Carney jersey love.
I love my grey Ellis t-shirt...
Grey ones haven't been sold at the team store since 2003. :)
(Yeah, okay, it's not BANDO, but 2003 was almost half my fanhood ago, so it's a long time for me... LOL)
I would pick Ellis
But a famous Athletic from the past or a HOF guy is a good suggestion.(agree with Zonis). If you are really set between Harden and Barton...I would go with Barton. He is more likely to be on the team and playing at the end of the season than Harden IMO.
Jack Cust
He was the best story of 2007 and we'll have him all year in 2008.
Barton
Of the two I'd say Harden is the most likely not to be around by this time next year.
Careful
Callups many times change their number for the next season. I'm ashamed to admit I'm not sure what Barton's numbers were in the minors, but I'd definately take him over Harden. Crosby was #8 in 03', Johnson changed after 05'...even though he wasn't a callup, something to think about.
I purchased an authentic road gray Chavez before the 05' season....I think I jinxed him but I am still happy with it. I like Chavy and knew he would be with the team for at least a few years...I think he will be around at least a couple more too.
I'm also wanting to get an authentic home jersey. I was high on getting a Swisher, still am...Barton is tempting though. I even contemplated Bradley, thinking for some silly reason he would work out and re-sign with them this offseason back in spring. I favor a position player since they obviously play more often. Harden was up there with Swisher knowing hes under control for quite some time but the injury thing is.....well thats been covered on here enough lets say.
re: changing numbers
I know lots of guys change their numbers, but usually that happens more when they get a stupid or random number. Barton got #10... not #71. I'm hoping he'll stick with it, although it seems more baseball players change their number after a couple seasons than in other sports.
Blanton went from 64 to 55 after his rookie year (I think it was then), and Haren just last year went from 24 to 15. Someone else changed theirs too but it escapes me... I want to say Calero but I'm not too sure and can't remember.

Get the most years out of it.
Go 'Bailey'.
Or you could confuse everyone...
Some options:
- GIANTS
- BONDS
- FREMONT
- BANJO MAN (#1 obviously)
- OAKTOON
Islet that one slide.
This time.
Nice try.
But I refuse to let you endocrinate me into your cult of puns.
Bravo!
King?
Fosse??
Buan???

Are you insul'in' me?
erik hiljus
not only did he take BART to the games, he skateboarded to it.
Whatever you do, don't put "Team Doctor".
You won't get out of the parking lot.
BUCK #6
Then, if he's a bust or leaves the team for whatever reason, you can have it changed to BANDO, and you won't have to change the number.
Go with
Rickey Henderson.
Only, don't put Henderson on the back.
Put RICKAY.
This was always a favorite of mine
Last name: Laundry
Number: 97 (needs fact checking, as I believe that's the year Beane became GM).
Take whichever you want
they are both good choises. I love it when I'm at the Collesium and I see a player's name on someone's back that gives me pause. I admire the courage to choose a player who is not an established star given the way the A's play the market.
