Ms Karma Came Looking For Byrnes

and her first name is Bitch!!!!

Oh Brynsie, oh the arrogance of explaining to TBS that you really loved being a D'Back cuz all your years with the Oakland A's, we were never able to get out of the first round.

Oh Byrnise, telling the media that it's not that the Rockies were good, it' just that they were lucky.

Ah Byrnsie, Ms Karma finally found you as you face planted at first base instead of being successful as the potentially tying run.

Ah Byrnsie, Karma found you shortly after you told your teammates in your rah rah locker room speech that you were going to lead them in getting "R" done tonight.

Yes, I'm a loyal A's fan and I don't want nobody talking trash'bout my A's. I gotta get my post season jollies where I can.
I took glee in seeing Mr Can't Touch Home Plate go down in flames.
May this be a humbling experience.
But I doubt it.

I forget who it twas

a few days ago on a thread, that said something like..  Will find out this rockie series my true feeling about Byrnes.  ....?

But, sure, I am afraid to say I got some post season jollies over seeing Byrnsie doing what he did, after saying what he said.

I generally like Eric Byrnes...

but once he started shooting his mouth off about how they were better and he was never able to back it up by playing well, I had NO problem smiling when he dove unsuccessfully into 1st base.

Being humble is a great thing. I understand that he is the "voice" of the Diamondbacks when it comes to the media, but he should work on his approach lol.

Byrnes

Guy is way too emotional.  Until he can keep his emotions in check, he'll always be a terrible baseball player come playoff time.

Running into Walls, Sliding Head First into Firstbase, Running His Mouth, Popping Up Fastballs down the Middle of the Plate, Trying To Hit a 3-Run Homer w/  Zero Men on Base....

These are the things that got him run out of the Bay Area.

by Colorado Fan on Oct 16, 2007 12:01 AM PDT reply actions

after watching him play during the season

I had thought he'd matured as a player.

But this postseason -- with him supposedly the veteran leader of a very young club that many thought were still a year away from contending -- he proved with his mouth that he hasn't learned...

I was rooting for the Diamondbacks in the ALCS, but quite frankly, the Rockies played better baseball and deserve to go on.

Feh

I'll say as a 35+afew year old guy that if you have the loose lips at 25, it does not go away.

Ever.

It's who he is, and it's not about to change.

I was rooting for the Diamondbacks in the ALCS...

but Cleveland and Boston wouldn't get off the field to let them play!

Anyway, Byrnes can take a long walk off a short pier...

He disrespected the A's by complaining that the A's couldn't get out of the first round, yet one of those years is pretty much his damn fault!

Now he talks big like Reggie Jackson and then can't back it up...

He was so damn futile at the plate, he looked like a monkey trying to f**k a football out there!

The D-Backs should do this country a favor and trade him to Japan for a case of sake and a relief pitcher to be named later.

Meanwhile...
The A's finished 76-86, they had enough players on the 60 Day DL to occupy Paris and the "team leader" has been a shell of himself for 2 years.

I don't give a damn about what Byrnes said. He stepped up and failed. Fine, you want to gloat about that be my guest. Just remember that the last time an A's player stepped up to lead the charge it wasn't to win a series but to run Ken Macha out of town.

Eric Byrnes has been healthy and productive over the past two seasons... that's a Hell of a lot more than you can say about most of the Oakland roster.

Yep. Warm and fuzzy... that's me.

Byrnes is a spaz

I don't really mind what he said about Oakland ... I didn't take it as a shot ... he was right, we didn't get out of the first round ... however, when it comes time to put up or shut up, Byrnes does neither.
He's a guy that wins fans over by running all over the place and looking as if he's 100% "balls to the wall."  Usually, he's over-running a fly ball or sliding into first base -- brilliant -- and hurting his team that way. But hey, he had a good year and went to the playoffs, good for him. Just wish people realized Bradley was dead-on in his description .... "false hustle" ... Byrnes is a circus act.

actually we did.  last year.  after byrnes was off the team.

and maybe we would have done so earlier if he had been smart enough to *** touch home plate instead of limping away from the plate and pushing the catcher.

100%

I totally agree with you all. while I like the guy. I think he should have thought first before opening his mouth. I mean if he had just gotten up and touched the plate the A's would have beaten Boston in 03. As for saying Rox were lucky?! He must have forgot the head to head match ups. If I remember right the Rox won the season series. So who got lucky? Anyway, I can only hope our beloved A's
get healthy and win.

Byrnes was a clown, is a clown, and will always

be a clown.  How easily he forgets that if he wasn't such a nancy boy, skipping/hopping around at home plate after colliding with Veriteck, we'd have swept the Red Sox in 2003.  Advance out of the first round?  What a chump - this would have been your second time out of the first round - loser!

by SwisherSweet33 on Oct 16, 2007 10:00 AM PDT reply actions

I've disliked Byrnes since his last year with..

the A's.

It happened that my son had just been born a few months earlier. Things where hectic around the house and my wife told my brother and I to go to spring training to take a break.

When I got there I bought a baseball and set off to get autographs.

Way out in right field before the game is where he was signing. Byrnes wasn't playing so he took some BP then headed over there.

There was 20-30 fans. I was, like everyone else, leaning over the rail, ball extended waiting my turn. He signed the person's before me (an obvious dealer with a wife feeding him merchandise) and then stepped in front of me, looked me dead in the eye, then took another step and took the person after me.

It doesn't do it justice but it was like he recognized me and didn't like me. The dealer guy next to me even said, "wow, what did you do?"

As God as my witness I hadn't said anything, or did anything, just stood there and was dogged out.

Ever since, I've disliked him and rooted against him.

Sorry if that seems shallow, but it was really depressing to have a guy that you really liked treat you like that.

So bottom line, yeah, I was happy with the game.

by whyareyou on Oct 16, 2007 10:09 AM PDT reply actions

Byrnes has a big mouth but
it's time for a reality check:

Out of the entire A's team, who had the most games played, at-bats, runs, hits, triples, rbis, stolen bases, caught stealing (but still had better base stealing % than any of the A's top stealers)? Byrnes

Out of the entire A's team, who went to the playoffs? Byrnes

Was he a bust in the postseason? No.  He had 5 rbis.

Oh, you say he's a bad fielder? As a CF, his FPCT was 1.000, his Range Factor 2.66 and his Zone Rating .942.  In LF (where he played the vast majority of his games), .984, 2.30 and .911 and in RF .985, 2.33 and .873.

His zone rating in left was better than     Stewart's and his zone rating in center was better than everyone's except Buck!!!

The A's would have been significantly better with Brynes on their team this year.  So know that everyone has gotten their slaps in, let's sit back and ponder our first losing season in a while.

by bringbackmiggy on Oct 16, 2007 10:31 AM PDT reply actions

Brynes is apparently a very good corner OF

defensively.

BIS Zone Rating REALLY likes Byrnes in left: 22 runs above average. STATS likes him too: 10 runs above average.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

by rfloh on Oct 17, 2007 4:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Byrnes is
third in Zone Rating among LFs that qualify in the major leagues.  He is tied for second in Range Factor.  He also is tied for fourth in assists with 9.  Stewart, our starting LF, had less assists, a lower RF and a lower ZR.

Face it, Byrnes is better defensively and offensively than our starting LF.  And Stewart had a good offensive year!

You know what's reallllllly overrated?

Zone rating. Range factor. All this means is that Eric Byrnes is fast. No one's ever denied that ...
Oh sure, he'll run like hell and have a chance to make a play ... thing is? The ball usually sails over his head or bounces at his feet cause he's misread the ball so badly!!!!

i said it in another thread

but i definitely called the roll-over. he does try to do too much, but you can't take away the fact that he had an incredible season. talk all you guys want, but he would have been the best player on the team this year (well...not that he would have had anywhere near 50 sb's...maybe that's saying something about our a's...)

i still got love for you byrnesy. i mean come on, the diamondbacks were dead in the water, why not try something to fire them up? he thought that they would respond, not play even more scared. whose fault is that, his or the whole team's?

Sorry, no Byrnes love here

Sure, Byrnes plays with a lot of energy and hustle, and leaves it all out on the field. I'd rather see him play a little bit more using his head (and I'm not talking about using it to slide with). Great players do not forget to touch home when attempting to score, especially in the playoffs.

He's so fricking overrated

He shows great heart and effort when he falls down overthrowing the cutoff man - which he did throughout the NLCS, often allowing important extra bases. The Rockies won the series because they played waaaay better fundamental baseball.

Possibly.

There's the bias of remembering his mistakes (usually fundamentals) and his 6/60 skids and forgetting the rest. I just wouldn't want him for 10mil/year, m'self.

I can't tell how sarcastic you are, but

Byrnes was never on the same echelon as Tejada in what he gave the A's (save that stretch that culminated in the cycle against the G's).  Tejada was the best (or one of the best when Giambi was here) player on our best teams and he also provided the same intangibles while he played a key defensive position.

Not only that, but the call in 2003 on Miggy was a lot more controversial than that on Byrnsie.  Either way, I agree that there's no point living in the past, especially memories like that.  Give Byrnes his due: he had a better season than I ever expected him to.  But I don't think for a moment he could have duplicated it playing for the A's in the AL and at our park.

You're right

I'm biased towards Miggy because I think back more fondly on him than Byrnes.  And I don't think Byrnes should be blamed much more than Miggy.   But Tejada didn't know the complete rules on interference and Byrnes' mistake was not touching home plate, a slightly less confusing issue.

That said, they both made mental errors in the spur of the moment and I still have no hard feelings for either.  I wish they were both more cautious and continued running and touched home three or four times, but this issue is really not worth arguing.  All it does is bring back bad memories and I don't want to open that can of worms (or this case keep it open).  So just refer back to the title of this post.

While he was a fantastic SS with a flair for the dramatic, I have never let go of the fact that he stopped running in that game. I mean, who did he think he is, Terril Owens?

Once you adjust for park

Byrnes as a hitter, is the same player with the DBacks as when he was with the A's.

Byrnes' OPS+ in 2003, his 1st full season: 113. 109 in 2004, 111 with the A's in 2005.

With the DBacks: 95, and 103.

Adjusted for park, Byrnes was actually better with the bat with the A's. Even with the baserunning, Byrnes was probably better offensively when he was with the A's, adjusted for park.

Obviously, defense is another issue.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

by rfloh on Oct 17, 2007 4:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Speaking of parks...

Yes, Byrnes hit better in AZ than he did on the road but this again comes across as something of a cheap shot. "Oh, his numbers wouldn't look so good if his home park was somewhere else."

Have you seen Blanton's Home/Road splits for this year?

I'm not saying park factor isn't a legitamite point, I'm saying people use it rather selectively when discussing player performance.

Yep. Warm and fuzzy... that's me.

by grover on Oct 17, 2007 5:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, I've seen Blanton's home road splits

And adjusted for park, ERA+ of 111, Blanton is still a good pitcher.

Why is it a cheap shot to use park factors? Like it or not, baseball parks are not standardised. Like it or not, parks inflate and deflate offense. I'm not advocating throwing out Byrnes home park numbers. I'm not advocating that Blanton's favourable numbers, or any pitcher who throws in a low offense park, be thrown out. Just adjusted.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

by rfloh on Oct 17, 2007 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

'Cause like it or not...

you're still implying that Byrnes' numbers are somehow less than what they are.

Byrnes had a good year, better than the A's starting LF, and instead of just acknowledging that fact and moving on people want to find some way to undermine his success. Why? Because they're pissed off about him not touching home plate a few years ago!

And for the record, 50 SB and an 88% success rate is out-freakin'-standing. Not that you were badmouthing his thefts, I just thought someone should say that.

Yep. Warm and fuzzy... that's me.

Get that chip of your shoulder
I don't give a flying f** about him not touching thee f*** plate years ago. I would have NO problem with him on the team.

Yes, Byrnes' numbers ARE LESS than what they are. Just as Haren's and Blanton's numbers ARE LESS than what they are. Just as Sexson's numbers ARE MORE than what they are. Just as Dunn's numbers ARE LESS than what they are. That's the result of playing in an extreme park.

Yes, Byrnes was better than the crappy Shannon Stewart. So, that makes him a great player. Jose Guillen was also better than the crappy Shannon Stewart.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.
