The Kevin Thompson DLD, 10/15
First-time dumper, long-time lurker.
This dump is in honor of the great Kevin Thompson, who the Pirates stole away from us on this sad, sad Monday.
I have a fond memory of Kevin Thompson. I was at the A's game a couple of weeks ago, the last game of the year, when I heard the PA announcer announce the number-nine hitter for the green-and-gold: Kevin Thompson.
"Who's Kevin Thompson?" I asked.
Elsewhere, the Onion reveals some things you didn't know about ESPN's John Clayton and the Red Sux's Curt Schilling.
Busy college football weekend, I didn't see any of the games, but it sounds like they were all good ones. Cal San Jose St. Stanford LSU
Apparently a half an hour till the playoffs start. So dump fast!

Urban on A's/A-Rod fanwanking...
It's beyond stating the obvious that he'd be a great addition, but $30 million a year? The A's? If that happens, I will race Stomper around the bases on Opening Day in a lime-green Speedo.
Second time posting is twice as nice (copied comment from open thread because there was no DLD then!)
Stomper wouldn't piss on Urban's PC
even if Urban's Microsoft Word Hackcheck extension was on fire.

Glad I wasn't the only one posing this question at the game!!!
Angels' GM steping down!
Stoneman, 62, is planning to move to a consultant's position with the club. His four-year contract expired with the 2007 season but includes a mutual option allowing him to stay beyond '07 as either a GM or a consultant.
Stoneman's replacement as GM was not immediately clear, but it is believed that the Angels are looking at Tony Reagins, currently their director of player development, to succeed Stoneman.
Crap
If the new guy doesn't share Stoneman's prospect fetish, the Angels might actually improve their ball club at some point.
anyone reading angels sites
for their reaction and info on the new guy?
Nah ...
I've drank too much lately, I can't afford to sacrifice any more brain cells by reading HH.

But on the plus side
Now it's conceivable that the A's organization might actually do a trade with the Angels organization.
It's really funny
that Stoneman's weakness is supposed to be his prospect fetish. I wonder what the perception of his "prospect fetish" would be if he was a SABR GM.
Also, it isn't as if Stoneman hasn't tried to trade for players like, oh, Miguel Tejada, only to have the trade squashed by the owner of Tejada's team.
Yeah, he refused to overpay for Teixeira, and thus gratify the dreams of A's, Mariners, and Rangers fans. How is that a weakness, considering that Teixeira isn't really all that much better than Kotchman?
What?
Kotchman WARP1s over the last 3 years: 1.1, -0.5, 4.8
Teixeira: 8.5, 7.0, 6.1
That's not even close. I'm not saying that the Angels needed to make a trade for Teixeira, but the statement that Kotchman is "almost as good" is just false.
Not sure how whether a guy is a SABR GM or not impacts anything here. Schuerholz was a much better GM than Stoneman, because he found ways to improve his ballclub without expending huge sums of money, and he was certainly no SABR guy.
So you believe
But let's assume that WARP1 is not flawed, because of BPro's weird defensive metrics, 4.8 is, to me, almost as good 6.1. Of course, some statheads ignore the fact that Kotchman is younger and had weird physical maladies that cut into his playing time the last 2 years, hence the low WARP over those 2 years. Would you prefer that I say that Kotchman is almost as good NOW, and in the future?
You were repeating mantras that stathead writers who hate the Angels philosophy of "smallbal" chant, regardless of the details. Stoneman HAS shown a willingness to improve the team, without leaning on his farm. He has signed FAs: Cabrera, GMJ are the prominent ones; and tried to trade prospects for veterans.
