booooooo to the Bo-Sox
I don't know about youse folks, but I HATE the Boston Red Sox these days. This is a relatively new development for me as a fan; I actually look back with some fondness at the '75 team (yes, I am that old!)with Fisk, Rice, Lynn et al (plus my favorite all-time psychedelic leftie, Spaceman Bill Lee). I didn't even mind the '80s - '90's versions so much (especially since they kept losing to us in the playoffs).
But this new era of Red Sockishness (beginning when? With Theo's arrival? Ortiz? Or??) is just freaking UNBEARABLE. And it's not just sour grapes that they've got all that money to spend and we don't: I'm an A's fan that takes pride in our successes, to the degree that we are able to do it with the payroll limitations we have.
I just can't stand the whole "Cowboy Up/Idiots/etc." dubious mythology that has sprung up at Fenway lately. It seems to have gotten worse since they won the Series. Why is that?
Their fans have to be the most obnoxious fans in baseball these days (although Cubs fans come in close second). Why is the chip on the Red Sox Nation's shoulder getting bigger and bigger, as the payroll gets more and more bloated?
Get a life, please.
When those Red Sox fans invade our stadium every year, and HECKLE OUR PLAYERS ON THEIR HOME FIELD, well, that's beyond pathetic and lame. I am rooting so hard for the Indians this year to ride their recent hot streak and punch Boston's ticket just as they did for that other heinous, bloated, overhyped, classless Goliath AL East team.
Go Tribe!
(good link to an anti-Boston article; are the Red Sox becoming the Yankees?)

03 ALCS
It felt so good when Aaron Boone hit that walk off, then watch the "cowboy up" jackasses disappear.
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend"
Hence my tendency to root for Boston against my better instincts. I'm rooting for the Indians in the ALCS, though.
I hate the Red Sox
Red Sox fans have such a sense os entitlement, it makes my skin crawl. What's worse is their insistence on their own mythology; they rehash the same sob stories over and over. It's always Bill Buckner this and Bucky Dent that, SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY!!!!! And don't forget the way their stupid narrative ha been picked up in the popular culture. That stupid movie with Drew Barrymore marks a low point for the Farrley brothers.
I'm starting to hate everything about Boston.
As a tea connesseur,
I'm not thrilled about the way they waste their leaves.
And as a history connoisseur...
..I much prefer OLD England.
this guy did it for me: ESPN's Bill Simmons
like today for example:
Three weeks from now, there's a genuine chance that the Red Sox could be playing a deciding World Series game on Oct. 30, Oct. 31 or Nov. 1, followed by Kevin Garnett's home debut for the Celtics on Nov. 2, followed by a potential bloodbath between the undefeated Colts and Patriots on Nov. 4. If everything plays out that way (and that's a big "if"), that would have to be the craziest week for a single city in the history of sports, right? How could that ever be topped? A World Series appearance, followed by a famous NBA franchise debuting the Hall of Famer who's about to make them relevant again, followed by the most anticipated NFL regular-season game in 22 years? And this could all happen in a five- or six-day span?
(Note: In the irony of ironies, my second child is due right in the middle of this swirling storm of Boston sports craziness. You couldn't make this stuff up. I almost feel bad for him -- he's going to peak as a Boston fan before he even gets circumcised.)
simmons
is an excellent writer. of course he's going to be a homer, but i would be a homer too (well, except for the raiders...can't stand them either). his nickname on espn is "sports guy", which is short for "boston sports guy", when he was still stationed in boston. he moved to LA a couple years back, and i'm sure that's not easy for him.
not saying that i am rooting for the sox...i hate them. i just like simmons.
i read him all the time
and am familiar with his background, it's that he goes overboard sometimes with his homerness.
but admittedly he has one of the greatest jobs on this planet. imagine writing for the worldwide leader, and you can be as biased as you want, unashamedly rooting for your own teams (even beat writers don't get to do as much), and you get to add in stories/conversations of/with your dad, wife, kid, best buddies, etc, while mixing pop culture with sports. it's basically what we bloggers do all day long, but he does it for ESPN...and gets paid. and he doesn't have to be even the least bit objective. so maybe it's envy.
i still say espn should employ regional bill simmons' across the land.
I agree
Simmons is awful. He's not even that good of a writer. What I hate about him is his out-of-this-world arrogance. I glanced through his last piece (don't ask me why) and he writes, "No matter how much you love baseball, it's nearly impossible to care about the Colorado-Arizona series." What!? Excuse me!? I'm loving that series right now. What a total condescending douche bag.
I'll never forget his article a couple months ago where he went to Tampa Bay and basically bashed the entire organization, team, fans, and stadium. He's the definition of an asshole, and the reason I hate Boston. It's ok to root for your team, but don't act like other teams/fan bases don't have a right to exist.

To be fair, in the case of Tampa,
that's actually true.
The fan base doesn't exist, and the team has no right to.
yes, that's the other side
that I forgot to mention.
Not only does he root for his own teams, he bashes others, and even goes so far as to bash other leagues. In his story about the "top 25 intriguing players to watch in the playoffs", he (purposely) ignores the NL.
It makes me almost wish that Boston does make it to the Series only to be swept by Colorado.
But I wouldnlt be able to take another week of gloating from him.
He is incredibly irritating
The endless stream of pop culture references, which are invariably much less hip or timely than he seems to think, make his columns unbearable.
Geez louis...
I just re-read your post. I didn't realize he said the upcoming New England/Indy game is the "most anticipated NFL regular-season game in 22 years." Anticipated that greatly by who? That's not the most completely arbitrary statement I've ever heard <sarcasm>.
The two best teams in the league, sometimes with mutual undefeated records, do meet in the regular season on a fairly frequent basis. Even when they don't, other very good teams meet and it's highly anticipated based on a potential variety of things (past meetings, conflicts, etc.) But see, I almost forgot the rule. If it's not a Boston team it doesn't take on the same importance. The guy is just above and beyond.

Try living in Boston
These people are unbearable
I feel bad admitting this
but I'm rooting for the team that lost the night before in both the alcs and nlds. I could honestly care less who wins, I just don't want to say goodbye to another season of baseball, even one as disappointing as this one.
With that being said... Any sox fan who still tries to pretend he's somehow morally superior to the yankees needs to be punched in the face (or locked in a room with Dane Cook for 2 weeks, which might well be worse)

Cleveland says, "OK!"
Touchdown!
With extra point.
On the plus side, even for Red Sox fans,
James Taylor should be able to write some great sad music tonight, and that's always good stuff.
Cleveland is showing itself
to be a scrappy little team. Maybe they will show the league how to destroy the beasts from the east after all. I hope so.
I think they have a shot
They can definitely win 2 of 3 at home (especially with Dice-K and Wakefield going in the next two), and then back at Fenway it figures to be Schilling and Dice-K (though I'm betting on Beckett on short rest if there's a game 7) - and the way Schilling looks right now I'll give Cleveland a great chance to beat one of those two. The Red Sox rotation is basically one pitcher deep plus a lot of "innings eaters".
An interesting observation.
The A's have already fired more people than the Yankee's.
The night is young
I've said this many times before
the Red Sox are the Yankees, only instead of sitting smuggly by, the Sox and their fans whine, cry, and moan about everything! If it isn't Bucky Dent, it's Bill Buckner, if it isn't Buckner, it's Boone.
What's worse, they've become America's team as a result of ESPN's obsession with their "courageous, gallant, heartfelt effort." I see Boston hats and jersey's everywhere, a large number bought during or after 2004.
The perfect example of Red Sox Nation? Derek Lowe after beating Oakland in '03. Classy till the end.
The worst thing that could happen is Boston winning another title ... their fans are unbearable as it is. By far, and NY isn't close ... by far the most obnoxious, overbearing, and rudest fan base this country has ever seen.
Well said.
I'd have rooted for NY if they'd played Boston in the ALCS. Go Tribe!!

and the Boston pen continues to demonstrate
how "classy" they are. Did you see them banging on the bullpen roof and playing like drummers last night? No professionalism there..just like Lowe and his buddies wearing L-I-L-L-Y on the backs of their warmup jackets and inciting the rabble.
GO TRIBE!!!!
I Agree About the Red Sox fans but not Cubs
The Cubs are still humbled by the fact that their team hasn't won a World Series in nearly a century and when I went to Wrigley in May I found them to be a generally humble lot. However, I agree with every word you said about the Red Sox and their obnoxious fans. The cowboy up thing didn't even make sense. Who the hell ever heard of a New England cowboy? And the dubious "curse of the Bambino" garbage obscured several decades of bad baseball decisions and outright racism in Boston (remember the busing riots of the 70's?) that precluded them from getting talented black and latin players for decades. New Englanders are an awful and rude bunch and their posuer, bandwagon fans have adopted their style.
They claimed Jay Marshall today...
Asshats!
Well, someone had to.
It's not like we ever did.
