DLD 1/7/07: Ummm, Erstad?

Good morning, virgin link dump by me, sorry if yours is written already salb...(not really)

Darin Erstad appears to have options, with the A's?

Erstad said six teams have expressed serious interest in signing him, either as a left fielder, center fielder or utility player. Though he declined to name the teams, the Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies and Seattle Mariners are believed to be among them.

Serious interest? Is this written in like Ray Rattorion language, which changes words from possibly to likely, and in this case... possibly to seriously?

Perhaps we can get him on a cheap contract, because it would be nice to have gold glove defense at 1B if DJ sucks, and gold glove def in CF if Kotsay gets hurt.

Romo's drop saves the Seahawks, 21-20.

Romo's botched hold on a 19-yard field goal try with 1:19 remaining forced the Pro Bowl quarterback to scramble left, but he was tackled at the 2 and the Seahawks escaped with a 21-20 victory in the wildest of NFC wild card games Saturday night.

"It looked like it was a pretty good snap. He was the holder all year," Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said. "We were in position to win if we could just execute the extra point."

I just want to go on the record and say that I feel for those kickers/long snappers and holders. They get all the blame if they mess up once, because there always needed in pressure situations. The entire game was filled with mistakes from both teams, Dallas just seemed to suck just a tad bit more.

Commence dumping.

A truly unfortunate mishap that is inexcusable...
...causing many on the Left to not know whether to snicker or wince.  Of course one of the Left's own, Charlie Rangel, sees a notification that seems to neither cause snikering or wincing -- a notification of a different type that may prompt the following nostalgic headline: US Congressman makes service compulsory, forcing free citizens to enlist.

Gahhhhh
No, the fumble never happened. I've been avoiding ESPN. Tony Romo gets the snap, puts the ball down, Gramatica kicks it through... right?

That was probably on par with watching T-Long take strike 3 as the most heartbreaking playoff game I've seen.

Speaking of holders/kickers,
sadder yet was the death of USC's 21-year old FG kicker Mario Danelo, found at the bottom of a cliff (cause of death currently unknown).

I'd provide a link but I'm a strict vegetarian (I do eat meat, however; I just don't engage in online functions whose names also stand for meat products).

As for Darin Erstad, do we feel we don't have enough 1B/OF options, because Swisher, Johnson, and Durazo, along with Bradley, Kotsay, Kielty, and Goleski, are only 7 players for 4 spots? I suppose if we were to trade Johnson, Erstad could be argued as a sufficient offensive and defensive replacement, except to slide into a backup role--which is where Johnson should be, unfortunately.

I wouldn't take Darin Erstad over Antonio Perez.
I mean, seriously now, haven't we just finished patching all the Eric Byrnes-shaped holes in the outfield wall, and now they want us to pay to see Darin Erstad do a Rodney McCray?

Eek! How about Billy McMillon instead?
Erstad's stats have taken quite a nosedive over the last three seasons.

OBP
2004 - 346
2005 - 325
2004 - 279

Sounds like just a rumor. Maybe someone actually overheard "Oklahoma Redhawks" because Texas needs more 33-year old AAA outfielders?

by Mark H on Jan 7, 2007 11:35 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

re
Erstad is a similar player to Payton, if he only bats against righties.  We need somebody that can play CF if Bradley and Kotsay are hurt.  We don't even have anyone in AAA.

Beane can't give Erstad guaranteed money, which I'm sure means we won't get him, but if for whatever reason he would take an NRI, I'd be for it, and if he's healthy, he's a nice player to have on the bench.

?

I'm fine with Thomas as the fifth outfielder and pinch runner, and I do think a guy like Thomas is going to be more important than a guy like Perez. Perez didn't even play with all the injuries last year.  When would we ever have use for him?

Drafting has been the only thing they have done
well lately, except Gallery, but everyone thought he would be good.

They passed on both Leinart and Cutler.

I could go on, but I'm lazy.

Drafting is a problem, that you say otherwise only proves your ignorance.

Huff had a great rookie year bud...
don't know what you've been smoking... He's been the main anchor on our pass defense, which by the way was rated number 1.

Huff, Nhamdi, Washington, Morrison all have been great successes for us.

Huffs a good player
hits hard and reminds me of Donnie Edwards a little bit. Raiders have a nice linebacker corps. Morrison is awesome, I love that guy's game.

I'm guessing you mean the Raiders needed a QB much more than a LB?

by apilgrim on Jan 8, 2007 8:29 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

eh
Russell could be a good one, but the Raiders have got to be the very worst team to mature on as a young, undisciplined rookie QB.  I think they might be better off going with Quinn, the more polished passer...

Erstad?
If the A's sign Erstad, then Beane has officially lost his touch. Erstad is TERRIBLE! TERRIBLE! Not only is he even more injury prone then all of our other players combined, but that is a GOOD thing! He can't hit, and he can only field 1st Base anymore. And waddyaknow, what we need most of all is OFFENSE, not defense.

by Zonis on Jan 7, 2007 5:56 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Wow, chill.
Erstad, if signed, will probably command a salary south of $1 mil. Beane's not signing him to any huge deal, it's just building off last year's mantra; depth, depth, depth.

You can only have so much depth.
Unless we sign him to a minor league deal, he's going to push someone else off the 40-man.

Assuming he gets out of spring training without breaking his leg off rounding third.

Can he?

If Erstad can still play CF than he'd be an OK pick-up because you know Kotsay is going to miss some games.

but he's certainly not worth more than a million and of course NO promises of playing time are appropriate.  But if that's what we're asking of the guy, a) why would he sign here? and b) is there no free talent that can do the same?
