Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Mar-co Scutar-o!!!

Marco Scutaro is having a great time in Winter League in his home country of Venezula. He even won the batting title in the regular season. Hope, the success can translate to MLB's regular season with the A'S, and post season, too.

Durazo and Barton
Hitting well down there:
"Erubiel Durazo, 1B/DH -- Durazo went 7-for-21 with a homer and five RBIs in the final week of the regular season. The 31-year-old hit .344 on the season with 18 home runs and 56 RBIs in 227 at-bats for Naranjeros de Hermosillo."

Barton
Let's not downplay how well Barton did, too.  Good numbers, good on-base %---I like this kid.

Good OBP but low SLG
http://www.lostorosdeleste.com/estadisticas.html

I was checking this page during the last couple months.  I would be more encouraged if Barton showed a little more power than the 3 extra base hits (all 2B).  At least the 74 at bats is a small enough sample size to be pretty much irrelevant except maybe as a confidence booster.  He didn't play in the last two weeks which I hope was expected.  Also of special interest: Esteban German batted .244 with an OBP of .392.

nothing to worry about
With our offensive style, thats nothing to worry about. If we have a runner on first and Barton singles out to right field (30% of the time) theres a very good chance that runner advances to 3rd.

There's a lot to worry about
The historical success of non-athletic players who have low isolated slugging percentages is not particularly pretty.  I have to leave now, but if I remember I will link to some of those studies later.  In lower levels, Barton has shown decent isolated power despite not hitting many homeruns.  At AAA and in Mexico, his isolated power is frightening.  He has to show he can hit with power against high level pitchers before I am in any hurry to see him in the major leagues.  He is young and still has time to develop, but he has work to do this year, and his numbers in Mexico only confirms that problem.
I'd like to eat my lunch, but Billy just kicked me out of my office.

and maybe it's time to close the book on...
..Twbo buck Chuck.

Thomas hit .224 over 156 ABs. Gregorio Petit did better than that, and he's only a AA player.

Ditto Santiago Casilla. He looks rusty as all get out.

Then again, he is 78 yrs old.

I wonder if 2007 will be a breakout season...
