I was reading the article on mlb.com and couldn't help but to notice the quote from Zito regarding the mention of signing with the Giants. Zito says when he heard of the offer his reaction was "Let's go for it. Let's do it."
It makes someone wonder if Barry's love from the Bay Area really made him want to play in SF or if the thoughts of $18 mill/year was the deciding factor. Personally, that $18 mill sounds pretty good, but for whatever reason Z doesn't seem like he'd be the type of guy who would be all about the money.
Maybe he really does love the Bay Area or maybe he wants to get some Oakland A's fans to do the unthinkable and convert to Giants fans. On second thought that would be almost as unheard of as a Red Sox fan becoming a Yankees fan or a Yankees fan becoming a Mets fan. Doesn't seem possible. Sure, Barry had some amazing (or almost mystical) power over fans in Oakland, but don't you think the SF fans already have a Barry to love? *Side note: how can you really love Barry Bonds though?
Going to Oakland A's games this season won't be anywhere near the same. Sure there's still Chavvy and Swish, Crosby and Harden, Haren and Jason K..but it's not going to be the same on Opening Day 2007 when number 75 doesn't take the mound. It's not going to be the same when #75 isn't dominating the Giants in the Bay Series and it sure as hell isn't going to be the same when we see #75 wear his high socks for a team that isn't the beloved OAKLAND ATHLETICS!
