A's in the playoffs

I was watching MlB TV online this evening and they were running a series of clips from the greatest moments in playoff history. Every time the A's were in a segment it was a horrible loss. Like Game three against the Red Sox in 04. This brings me to my point. I saw the play against the yankees where Jeter makes the bullshit back handed toss to home to tag out Jeremy Giambi, and i realized that this was my all time most hated plays. Maybe it was because my brother is a Yankees fan and he does his best to remind me of the play whenever he can. So my question for all of you is. What is one play that sticks out in your mind that really pissed you off or truly crushed all your hopes and dreams. 2 months and 17 days till the first day of the season. I hope there are no heart breakers this year. GO OAKLAND!

where to begin?
if your asking for a playoff series outcome, i would have to go with last year aganist the tigers. but for a specific moment, probably keith foulke giving up the game winning the game winning hit to the red sox in game 4 of 2003 ALDS.

Thirded
I've been an A's fan for 20 years and that was without a doubt the most frustrating game of my life. It was infuriating enough at the time, but the way things turned out that year made it so much worse. And then to hear about how the Oakland approach was why we never win postseason series! Like Moneyball made Byrnes not step on the damned plate!

Slide, Jeremy- SLIDE!!!
to this day, still the one that sticks in my craw, I mean "memory."
I was there, and it'll always be a vivid and terrible moment.
Mostly because even Yankee fans I know admit that he was safe- his lead foot hit the plate before the tag caught his trailing leg.
But hey, you confuse the ump when Jeter's making bizarre back-handed flips to the catcher and the runner doesn't do what 99.9% of runners would do in that situation...
Sorry, didn't mean to belabor it. Obviously yeah it's still a sore point.

I think he was definitely out.

I'm willing to concede that's possible, and anyway
nothing's going to change that call.
I've seen replays too that seemed to indicate the tag missed his front leg and caught the trailing leg instead, and that his front foot hit the plate before the tag hit the trailing leg.
Truth and beauty are often in the eye of the beholder. Or just are, period.
It's just as likely you're right, possibly more.
I think only Posada and Jeremy G will ever know for sure.

Long ago, I decided to
substitute the gatorade commercial for reality concerning Jeremy's inclination to go horizontal on a baseball diamond.  I like this reality much better.  It's almost sad that the Yanks were elimated from the postseason on that play in my world.

I'd have to go with
back-to-back statues of Melhuse and T-Long, because unlike any of the above examples (also painful), it determined the outcome of the entire series. Just a bloop single, Adam! At least take a f--ing swing, T.

why ask for so much?
Melly just needs a well placed out to at least tie the game - getting a bit greedy asking for a hit, no?

That was the best A's game I've ever been to
in my entire life.  And I've been to many: Rickey breaking the steals record, Tejada's first game in the bigs, Game 3 of the '89 series and more.

That energy was just off the charts; I tivo'd the game and had to go back and watch/listen to it like 40 times the next few days to conceptualize how amazing the atmosphere was!

Me and your kid probably have the same IQ!! -Swisher to Chavvy

Here's a good memory
It didn't happen at the Coliseum, but I was there in '89 when the A's beat the Giants to win the World Series.  There were about 100 of us gathered behind the first-base dugout to celebrate on their turf.  It was awesome!  (I was also there during the earthquake, but that's another diary.)

Bottom 5
Worst moments in my memory
  1.  #@$%! Kirk Gibson
  2.  Slide Jeremy!
  3.  Swing T-Long!
  4.  Go back and tag the base Byrnsie!
  5.  Keep running Miggy!

by Rickeyfan on Jan 15, 2007 3:27 PM PST reply actions

All good choices
But Gibson was Game 1. At the time, I still thought we'd win and looking back, I don't think we would have either way. The slide was rough, true. Four and five were in the same miserable inning. And we don't even get company in our whining the way those pathetic Red Sox fans do. Screw the Red Sox, screw Byrnes, and screw you for bringing it up.

P.S. Long just sucks.
P.P.S. No offense.

Worst moment for me?
I was in attendance when good ol' Gil Heredia gave up a 5-run first inning. Maybe not the most climatic but i just remember thinking, how could it come to this.

red sox 04 was the worst ever
no one has mentioned...

-miggy and chavy unable to hit at all.
-huddy getting in a bar fight the night before he's supposed to pitch.
-the ramon-chavy botched rundown.
-the defensive errors.
-"lilly" chant.
-lowe crotch grab.

i'll always hate the red sox and like ted lilly, the only guy who came through for us.

that was in 03
the silver lining was that the Red Sox fans ended up even more miserable than us.
