Erstad, an Athletic?

Former Angel Darin Erstad come be an Oakland Athletic by today according to MLB.com and Mychael Urban. In this article, David Frost, Asst. GM has cofirmed a one-year deal. Wonder if this deal will effect Blanton/Milledge trade talks? Also, the situation with Swisher and Johnson since Erstad can play both first and the outfield.

If
this deal is do for under 1 million bucks i will applaud it anything more is too expensive for a bench player way past his prime.

If this does happen...
...all those HalosHeaven knobs will suddenly find all sorts of things to slam Erstad about, despite defending his no-hitting ways for years and claiming he's the master of "grit".

Conversely, those of us who have always slammed him as a non-hitting douchebag will continue to say so, only we'll be a little sadder doing so.

Seriously though... Erstad?

You'd think they would have learned from the Sauerbeck experiment. Sometimes it's better to just kick a kid upstairs than waste a spot on a bag of dirt.

i think erstad's going to be
a utility guy. and given his abilities in the OF, not a bad one to have.

I doubt he'll play much first. If DJ is out, it'd still make more sense to put Swish at first and Erstad in the OF, since OF defense is more important than first base defense.

He's too injury prone in the OF
There's a reason he moved to 1B in the first place.

generally
you don't worry about players like erstad getting hurt, and the reason that he moved to first was because the angels had jose guillen, garret anderson and vlad guerrero.

by Nick86 on Jan 12, 2007 2:46 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Huh?
None of those guys are CF....Figgins played CF when Erstad moved....so no.

As far as not worrying about a guy like Erstad getting hurt...He's played one full season in the last 4 years...and 2 of those were under 70 games!

He played CF in 05 when Erstad was at first.

the Angels also thought
Erstad would be less likely to get hurt at 1B

by OaklandSi on Jan 12, 2007 4:01 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

in 04
when erstad moved, anderson played center.  figgins played 92 games at 3B and 54 in CF, most of those probably when anderson was injured or dhing. in 2005, finley mostly played center, although who knows why.

by Nick86 on Jan 12, 2007 3:00 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Who knows why?
Because Erstad got hurt when he played CF..had to move him to 1B

This sucks
The guy is just plain no good. He's a waste of money (although probably very little), and a waste of a roster spot. This is a mistake, although my guess is he'll be gone by August a la Eric Karros.

well
it pains me that i took time to look this up, but will caroll gave a "green" health report for Erstad, prior to 2004 (and he was correct, Erstad played 130 games), so I don't know if people were too worried about him getting injured. But for whatever reason he was moved, the A's recognize that Erstad doesn't have value if he's not in the outfield, even if the Angels didn't. And Garret Anderson did play CF that year.

I believe you,.,,
but fact is he played 67 games in 03....so a green in 04 seems odd.

Here is from ESPN:

The Angels figured moving Erstad to first base would keep him healthy, and they were generally correct. They will keep him at first, as they signed Steve Finley to a two-year deal in December to play center field. They know they are lucky to have a player capable of winning Gold Gloves at either position, and one who was willing to be shuttled back and forth.

I hope he gets cut in the Spring
Every game that Erstad plays decreases the probability of the A's making the playoffs.  This is a simply bizarre signing by the A's.  Of course, I thought that about the John Mabry trade and the guy came in and had the best 4 months of his career.  Billy got lucky then, will lightning continue to strike?
I'd like to eat my lunch, but Billy just kicked me out of my office.

yeah
the green might be a little optimistic, but erstad had been healthy prior to '03. i don't know the nature of his injury, but it may have not been the type that's easily aggravated. either way, it didn't make sense to move the light-hitting erstad to 1B, considering he was a top CF. no matter the injury risk, it made and makes more sense for him to save runs in the outfield at the risk of getting hurt than block a better hitter from playing first.

this is from bp, 2004:

n its place, the Angels have an all-world defensive center fielder who needs every bit of that D to offset his offensive and injury-related struggles of the last three seasons. With Guillen and Guerrero now on board, there's talk of moving Erstad to first base.

That move would be a colossal mistake--maybe the only position change in all of baseball that would make less sense than Jeter at short/A-Rod to third. According to Clay Davenport's defensive metrics, Erstad saved 39 runs in 2001 and 2002, his two most recent full seasons in center in which he stayed healthy. That's the equivalent of winning four games over those two seasons with his glove alone, ranking him ahead of any other CF in baseball, including Torii Hunter, Jim Edmonds, Andruw Jones, Mike Cameron and Carlos Beltran. At first base, Erstad loses that huge defensive edge, and becomes an overmatched singles hitter at a position full of Delgados.

You all are missing the point
Clearly Beane is afraid that the A's offense will resemble the Raiders'...so he's signed a good punter.

So far that's the most sensible explanation I've seen for the A's interest in Erstad.

A possible bright spot
Think of this way: Over the past few years the Angels, and their fans, have defended Erstad's huge salary by arguing that his "grit" "spunk"
"doing the little things that don't show up in box scores" jusitifed the investment and made him valuable.

Now we can test that theory for a fraction of the cost!

he's pretty much only going to be playing if kotsay and/or bradley is injured, and better "ersty" than charles thomas.

I knew we needed a lefty swinging CF who can't hit, but sure does play good D when he's healthy, which of course, is not often... Haven't seen anyone like that around here!

The end of the world is upon us.

Why do we want an oft-injured player who sucks even when healthy? Erstad hasn't had a good season in 7 years. Seven!!!

I really see nothing wrong with this deal.
And frankly, I don't know why everyone else does. We're not signing him to a big, multiyear deal. We're not promising him a starting spot, or for that matter a 25-man roster spot (depending on the terms of the contract). He is being signed for all the reasons that Billy loves, the 3 D's: Defense, Depth, and Determination (a.k.a. Grit).

He's another good guy to have around the clubhouse, help mentor Swisher ala the Big Hurt, only I'd rather have a defensive-minded guy tutoring Swish since he'll be playing a whole lot of OF once the Barton era begins, and Erstad fits the bill there.

So really, his potential suckitude shouldn't be a huge cause for concern unless Bradley, Kotsay, Johnson, or Swisher are down for extended periods of time, and if that happens aren't we screwed anyway?

My point of Erstad talking to Swisher
was solely for defensive purposes. Surround Swisher with 3 outstanding defensive OFers in
Kotsay, Erstad, and Bradley and only good things can happen.
