DLD 9/6/06: Last of Showalter for the year

This day in Baseball History

1995 Cal Ripken breaks Lou Gehrig's consecutive game record playing in his 2,131st straight game. When the game becomes official in the middle of the fifth inning, the new 'Iron Man' takes a victory lap around Camden Yards during the 22-minute standing ovation from the sell-out crowd, including President Bill Clinton.

2000 After reaching an agreement with Morgan, Lewis and Bockis LLP, Major League Baseball can now use the URL www.mlb.com. The law firm registered the mlb.com in 1994 and refused to release the domain name making it necessary for the sport to use www.majorleaguebaseball.com.

2002 For the first time in 11 years, the Homer Hanky makes its return to the Metrodome in Minneapolis in hopes of halting the A' record-setting 20-game winning streak, blanking Oakland, 6-0.

Rich Harden (strained elbow) threw 40 pitches in the bullpen, in what trainer Larry Davis called Harden's "best session yet, by far." Chron Notebook

Today's matchup in the West:

A's and Rangers, first pitch: 12:35pm PDT

----------                    ----------

Blanton (14-10, 4.51)          The Devil (13-9, 4.35)

It's really a myth
There is no shrinkage.  WYSIWYG--but don't tell them that.

What? No truth to it?
There's a guy at work who keeps telling the same story about shrinkage. Specifically, his little grandson's "cute" questions about it. Why? Why must he keep telling that story? <whimper>

Amazing...
7 shutouts yesterday!
"That's amazing," Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez said. "That's kind of a freak thing."

In the American League, Boston beat Chicago 1-0, Minnesota defeated Tampa Bay 8-0 and Kansas City blanked the
New York Yankees 5-0.

Over in the National League, Arizona defeated Florida 4-0, St. Louis beat Washington 2-0, Cincinnati defeated San Francisco 3-0 and Milwaukee blanked Los Angeles 9-0.

"I was looking at that, too," Texas manager Buck Showalter said after his team beat Oakland -- not in a shutout, but by 5-4. "I was hoping we could be part of that on the good end. You usually see that in day games after night games. Maybe they were all getting ready for the day game."

Why was a reporter asking Chavvy about it?

Also...

St. Louis' Bob Gibson, Oakland's Catfish Hunter, Detroit's Tom Timmermann, Boston's John Curtis and Houston's Don Wilson pitched complete-game shutouts on June 4, 1972.

There was one constant: Bruce Froemming, who umpired at third base in Milwaukee on Tuesday night, worked at first base when Wilson pitched his two-hitter in Montreal.

While Froemming worked third, his gut worked second.

Runs always seem hard to come by--
this time of year...which is why I'm concerned not for our offense but for our relivers-- like Gaudin. We need him to sharpen up in order ro do well. And what about Sauerbeck? It seems his last time he really struggled and hasen't had much of a chance to right himself.

Yeah, I keep telling Mets fans to STFU
because it doesn't matter which of the AL contenders they face, really. If they even get that far.

will have big troubles trying to keep any opposition from scoring half a dozen runs by the seventh inning.

Can we hope all 3 games of the Angels-Rangers
series is like this.

Extra, extra innings: Game lasts 30 hours, 84 frames

A baseball game that began at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Alliance ended Sunday at 4:05 p.m. That's 30 hours and five minutes between the first pitch and the final out. Game organizers are counting on the contest being long enough to break a world record.

Ratto's latest
link

A sort of season recap of the A's that is mostly complementary, but with plenty of <snerk>.  And complementary with the caveat that though this season seems a success, it'd still be disappointing to flame out in the first round of the playoffs again.  Or as he puts it:

But this is a story that could exceed mere cute if the boys can take all this charming overachievement, and turn it into lasting achievement for a change.

Bizarre
Dmitri Young DFA'd by the Tigers, according to Rotoworld.  He wasn't playing too terribly and was goig to be a FA at the end of the offseason.  Why not leave him on the team for a few weeks?  Somebody can pick him up for the year but he wouldn't be postseason eligible.

<draws glittery hearts around Kotsay's name>
Aww!
"I really wanted to come up with the big hit," Kotsay said. "It feels good to have some type of contribution."

Kotsay didn't worry about his back when he got on the base paths and later scored when he slid into Rangers catcher Gerald Laird on a Milton Bradley single.

"I'm putting myself out there with duct tape," said Kotsay, who is in his 10th season in the Majors. "I haven't been to the postseason and I'm doing everything to get on the field. If you're going to go out there, you have to go full-speed until you can't go anymore."

I really want to the A's to make it to the playoffs for Kotsay and Kendall.
