Weekend DLD 9/30/06-10/1/06: Stunted Cards

After having leaned heavily on AN through a season of ups and downs, I'm finally posting my first DLD, taking advantage of the fact that a huge portion of AN is in Anaheim this weekend getting ready for some serious card stunts tonight!

Speaking of stunted Cards, the St. Louis Cardinals are once again the favorites to win the NL Central after rallying from being down 2-0 with three runs in the bottom of the eighth (on a Spiezio 3-run triple, of all things).  In our own Central division, the Twins are afraid of the A's, and today resorted to throwing a game against a Chicago White Sox team that attempted to exclude from the line up anyone capable of hitting a home run.  The Tigers, meanwhile, would rather feel like the rest of the division, Twins included, is just standing in their shadows.

In today's Chronicle, Susan Slusser admits having been opposed to the trade for Milton Bradley, but thinks it looks better now that she's seen him naked.

"I want to be in a position...where I can have an impact..." Bradley said. "I wasn't swinging...like I was capable of doing...I started swinging it.  I've always been able to adapt and...have some speed..., do all those...things."

In Hollister, they feel that the A's have a compelling story.

Joe Morgan hearts someone named Ken Mocha.

And we are all lemur conkers.

The "Yankees As Bullets In Gun To Some Guys Head With Trembling Trigger Finger" one was profoundly disturbing. I don't think I want to know the translation.

Is it true that Perez broke his finger
and will be out for the post season?

Who will they replace him with? Bocachica?

True!
In the notes.  Looks like Boca's the favorite.
Certum est quod certum reddi potest.

yup, perez is done
looks like the A's want jimenez as the backup infielder and bocachica will be in the pinch running role.

from ESPN's 2006 season in review
one of the quotes of the year:
* From A's pitcher Brad Halsey -- the answer to the trivia question, "Who gave up Barry Bonds' 714th home run?" -- when he was asked afterward if there was any difference between the special commemorative "Bonds Balls" and the baseballs he was throwing to everyone else: "The only real difference is that there's a picture of Barry on the ball, and if you look in his eye, he winks at you."

I dunno.
But it can't make Perez any worse.

foulke considering retirement
``My contract status, right now, I could care less about it," said Foulke hours before throwing a scoreless eighth inning in the Red Sox' 4-3 victory over the Orioles last night. ``I might retire. I don't know. It's a big option. If I can't have fun playing this game, if I don't have the motivation to prepare, you know, as far as strength and training and all that. I'm not going to be a middle bullpen, 5 ERA guy. Either I can come back and be a dominant pitcher, or I'll take it to the house."

How Chavvy wouldn't be a lock.. I'm not sure.  Unless someone does something crazy like vote for A-Rod to pollute the ballots or something.

I mean, who would do that???

Two things:
1st: Let's enjoy the very good karma of our very best player (King Dick) getting healthy in the same short timespan that our very worst player (AP) breaks a phalange on his throwing hand. 2nd: The Onion had the gall to make fun of Frank Thomas! Even though I read The Onion and like it, I have to say they are ass-hats for making fun of FFT.

Gwen Knapp of the Chronicle
assesses the A's postseason chances.

And also gives props to Macha.

Ken Macha's managerial authority rose a few more notches when he locked Bradley in a full-body embrace during a dispute with the home-plate umpire last week. Bradley tried to move, and Macha just clamped down harder. It was an impressive display.
On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.
