New Text Message: Here's What You Missed

Having spent all of summer in a part of the world that cares only about basketball and boxing, it feels good to be back in the Bay Area in time to catch one last month of baseball. And it feels damn good to find the A's in a good position to win AL West.

But it was no fun at all trying to keep track of the A's halfway around the world. I was running errands one afternoon, right around the time when I expected an A's-Angels game to wrap up on the West Coast, when I spotted a guy wearing an A's cap. I almost ran him down, grabbed him by the collar, and demanded, "Do you just like wearing that cap or are you really an A's fan and if you are do you know what the final score is?" And once, I found myself so starved of baseball that I actually watched a Yankees game. Against Tampa Bay.

Thankfully, my husband was able to send game recaps by SMS to my cellphone. Reading them was so much fun, I thought I'd share them with y'all. Here's an abbreviated look at the season so far.

I'm stumped...
What part of the world cares only about boxing and basketball?

I thought virtually every place that doesn't care about baseball cares about either soccer, cricket, or rugby...

I actually read the news item
before I got the message. What really puzzled me was the one about Zito unzipped. And I think I got that message after a bit of a delay, way past midnight Pacific Time. I didn't want to rouse my husband from sleep with a message that read, "Zito pitched seven innings with his fly open?!"

Wow.
That's awesome!!! :D
I did for my sister (Kings fan) when she was away for a month last season.  I sent her detailed e-mails after every game, breaking down the game, with pictures and everything.  But of course, that was only for a month and they don't play everyday in the NBA.  ;)

BTW, your hubby reads AN?

It was fun reading his texts and remembering all those games.  I love the "AN Apeshit" remark on the Kendall HR game.

Where were you for the summer?

by sienna on Sep 3, 2006 8:56 PM PDT reply actions

The "AN apeshit" one's the best.
That came in at around 7 am on a day when I hit the sack at 4:00. After I read that message, I couldn't go back to sleep.

I was in the Philippines, 15 hours ahead of the West Coast. The day games were the toughest to follow, starting at 3:30 am Manila time.

3:30 am???
I bitch and moan about those 10pm games since I'm in Florida.  Welcome back to the states - just in time for the best part of the season! :)

I loved "AN apeshit," too...
Had to turn the laptop just now to show my husband what was cracking me up so much!  Great diary  :-D

I love this!
I occasionally have to attend evening meetings for a volunteer position I hold and my husband always text messages me game updates.  I also am known to frequently go online to check the score on my Treo.    I realized once that I was going overboard when another mom mentioned to me at a little league game "Wow, you much have a really important job because everytime I see you you're checking in."  Oops.

wow
I love how he texts pratically the whole A's box score in addition to the game score...very detailed.  The random comments were entertaining
