Ken Rosenthal gets snarky about Esteban in assesing this offseason's crop of free agent proven veteran pitchers.

Andre Ethier no longer looks like the 1st ballot HOFer that Bill Plaschke touted him as.

A prolonged September slump in which he is batting .128 with no home runs and one run batted in has relegated Ethier to a second-stringer recently, with Marlon Anderson getting the majority of starts in left field.

"I don't know if I'm going to be here next year or not," said Ethier, who before Friday was batting .314 overall with 11 homers and 54 RBIs and remained in the running for National League rookie of the year. "It's pretty obvious by the way the last couple of weeks have been going."

General Manager Ned Colletti appeared stunned when informed of Ethier's comments, saying, "I plan to have him here. He's got a long, good future ahead of him in L.A."

Ethier's OPS: 854, BABIP: 366

Milton's OPS: 803, BABIP: 307

I guess
Rosenthal didn't notice that Loiza was pitcher of the month in August, and argueably the A's best pitcher the past 6 weeks.  It shows how little the A's get any attention by the east coast press.

agreed
loiaza has unquestionably been one of the best pitchers in baseball during the stretch run, but rosenthal's overall point is valid, that mediocre-to-decent starting pitchers are getting paid big time. loiaza was a decent pitcher (minus the time in ny) once he developed the splitter, with a chance for brilliance (see 2003, august-current, 2006). to me, that's not enough to warrant the contract he got (rosenthal's point), but relative to the pitchers market right now, loiaza is going to be a bargain.

"Thomas deserves every accolade coming his way, but there isn't nearly enough credit given to Milton Bradley. Given his history, maybe it's wise to wait until season's end, but this ranks with the greatest moves ever pulled by GM Billy Beane, a frightening gamble that paid off in a million ways. The stat geeks can't seem to figure out the A's success, given the injuries and paltry offensive numbers (especially before this month). Just watch Bradley during the course of a game, the astonishing energy he brings to the field, his interaction with teammates. That's a big reason right there."

so now that his giants are dead and the a's are going to the playoffs as statheads predicted, jenkins is going to tell us with a straight face that "stat geeks can't seem to figure out the a's success."
how do these people sleep at night...

new york times magazine article on ken mehlman:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/24/magazine/24melman.html

When Mehlman talks about politics, he doesn't talk about Machiavelli; he talks about "Moneyball," Michael Lewis's book about how the Oakland A's employed statistical modeling to assemble a powerhouse baseball team, sending to pasture the old-line scouts with their years of calling it from their guts. "We are the party of 'Moneyball!"' Mehlman proclaimed, practically shouting and bouncing on the balls of his feet, talking to a room of slightly bewildered Republicans in California last year. "They measured everything. We are doing the same thing in politics."

from mccovey chronicles:
http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/story/2006/9/22/111638/432

"Well, that would not be necessary Mr. Sabean. Winning a pennant could easily be accomplished with scouting. And the scouts could be told to accept factors ranging from years played, veteran experience, service time, experience, and experienced veterans, to a cross section of other necessary skills.
Of course, it would be absolutely vital that our top veterans and experienced players be included to foster and impart the required principles of leadership and tradition. Naturally, they would win prodigiously, eh? There would be much time, and little to do. But, ah, with the proper free agent signing techniques and a ratio of, say, ten veterans to each rookie, I would guess that we could then work their way back to a division title within, say, twenty years."

Bruce Jenkins is just horrible
He's got to be the worst baseball writer north of Bill Plaschke. It boggles the mind that someone could write about baseball for as long as he has and still get so many things wrong. Even on those rare occasions where he gets the major points right - that Milton Bradley is a very good player and the A's are, yes, a very good team - he still manages to screw up the details, or contradict all the other garbage he's written.

As recently as mid-July, he wrote confidently that the Angels would pull away from the A's to win the division.

And early in the season he wrote "Colletti is being labeled a genius down south, mostly because it's so refreshing to have Paul DePodesta, his predecessor, out of the way. Unlike the introspective, almost secretive DePodesta, Colletti is an old-school guy in the Brian Sabean image, a guy who works the room, talks to scouts, makes his presence felt throughout the organization. ... The Dodgers are absolutely certain they will win the division. For a team torn apart by dreadful trades, conflicting philosophies and Milton Bradley, that is a most refreshing change."

But now supposedly it's the "stat geeks" who are surpised? Christ, what an asshole.

Some are sabermetricians.

sort of disagree
Jenkins is a decent writer (his language use, that is) in an old-school way. He does his share of predicting, but with a lot less of the "you are an idiot if you disagree with me".  Plaschke is a blowhard who ran to the front of the the pitchfork and torches mob  coming for DePo and used all of his limited rhetorical tricks (cherry-picking data and outright lying) to be the face of the anti-Depo mob.

In short, Jenkins is well-meaning but ignorant.  Plaschke is a propagandist and the gleeful tool of bullies.

i'll grant you the first point
jenkins is a better writer than plaschke.
however, i'm sure jenkins would lead a similar mob if a bunch of "stat nerds" took over the front office of the giants.

Yeah, I've written Jenkins
a few times after one or another of his unbelievably arrogant and self-assured "3 Dot Lounge" columns on baseball. It would be almost impossible to chronicle how often he's wrong, but what's worse than that is the endless hate he spews for the what he calls "the stat geeks" and the endless veneration he gives to old school guys like Colletti, Dusty Baker, and players such as J.T. Snow, Erstad, and most any Giant veteran.

What's most stunning is how he won't ever own up to the truth. Case in point: Pitcher workload. People said Dusty was ruining the Cubs staff--he mocked them. The Cubs staff broke down--he continued to mock critics, never giving an inch. What? How can that be? Jenkins on baseball is like Bush on Iraq and torture and everything else: He sees what he wants to see; the facts and the truth are never allowed to intrude.

i'm sure he's right, the team names that are considered derogatory probably weren't chosen because they were considered derogatory, but what exactly does that prove?

what if the washington redskins had been called the washington n**gers when they were created, but not because that was a derogatory term but for other reasons?

Time for the Indians to get a new logo. They can even keep the name "Indians", but let's get the racist red sambo outta here and replace it with a feather or some other, non-offensive symbol. The Braves (whom some American Indians aren't very happy about the Tomahawk Chop thing) at least have enough dignity to  not use a racist characature.

Even if you accept his premise
that the INTENT behind the names is not derogatory, you still have to deal with the fact that the names themselves maybe derogatory.

Let's say you call me a "yellow, slant-eyed, sallow, foot-binding chink" plus whatever other racial stuff used against Chinese (As you can tell from my lame insults, I can't think of any). Assume that your feelings and conduct towards me is respectful.

Does that mean that you can go around calling people racial epithets, as long as your intentions were amiable?

In my opinion the names are acceptable, if the group involved has no problems with them.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

argumentative, but not an argument
Boudreaux's certainly correct that team nicknames aren't adopted because they're derogatory; what he doesn't recognize, however, is that (a) there's a really complex history with depictions of Native Americans in particular (the not-intentded-to-be-derogatory "redskin" as it's employed in the DC football franchise reduces to the "positive" side of the dehumanizing epithet: noble, loyal, natural ... basically, turning a people into a golden retriever); and (b) he employs the fatuous "Hey, I don't mind when folks call me [insert various "white" ethnicity that suffered discrimination 50-200 years ago], so why should [people still suffering from real and quantifiable discrimination] care what we call them?"

All that being said, I think the DC football franchise should relocate to Virginia, and adopt the nickname "Macacas."

Rosenthal and Ethier
Rosenthal--if you listen to him regularly--rarely has any valuable insights. Because of Fox and KNBR, I've heard him enough to know that he's really much more about spouting opinions than about making sure those opinions are thought through.

The Loaiza column was kind of funny, but also just stupid at this particular time. Loaiza was essential in getting the team that signed him to the playoffs. Without him the A's probably don't win the West. There's really nothing to mock there. And more: the last two months have been so good that it's reasonable to feel that the loss of Zito won't hit the A's as hard as it might have--another reason he was signed. So on the two most critical counts the signing has been a success. That makes Rosenthal an ass. Matt Morris was the obvious choice to be mocked, but as everybody in the Bay Area has learned this year Matt's "a great guy" and "a gamer" and "tough as nails" and a bunch of other meaningless crap, so I guess he's untouchable even though he contributed mightily to his team being home this October.

As for Ethier. I regularly check his stats--and, yes, irrationally root against him. The guy has not hit a home run in forever. He is literally in an Eric Byrnes fall off the face of the Earth slump the last six weeks.

Have you heard Sabean on Morris
Over and over: It was a good signing because he's eaten a lot of innings. That kills me. Yeah, those innings he ate in Milwalkee and St. Louis and at home against the Padres and.... Yeah, those really helped the team out. I mean, they were all certain losses, but at least the bullpen was kept fresh. What a joke.

And Rosenthal: I guarantee you that right now he's putting on his suit and readying himself for a live Fox interview that add absolutely nothing of value to anything anyone who watches baseball knows.

by RLangford on Sep 23, 2006 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

I like Rosenthal
actually. At least he doesn't spout baseless rumours like Will Carroll. I believe the problem in this case was that Rosenthal was talking to a scout who's snark is unfortunately at least 1 month out of date.

The snarkiness about Kris Benson was spot on. And he managed to resist bringing up Kris' wife.

I agree with you about Ethier. That's why I posted the OPSs and BABIPS. I think he projects maybe to be a Byrnes or Coco Crisp type of player. I just find it amusing that Plaschke recently was making him seem to be a 1st ballot HOFer.

On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

Bold Question
Will the A's sell out during the playoffs?

They do, after all, have less capacity (though average ticket prices are thus higher). But, there is also the fact that MLB might make them open up the 3rd Deck for the Championship and World Series.

But I have the feeling that unless we face the Yankees in the Championship and the Mets in the World Series, we wouldn't sell anything up there.
