Zito's out of here.

I liked it when Giambi, Damon, Miggy, Huddy and Mulder where on the "way out". They all kind of left the door open to returning (even if they weren't really going to come back).

This thing with Zito -openly- talking about leaving our A's is kinda lame.

I will stay upbeat and root for him (cause in the end I root for the  uniform).

Has any of our big free agents been so open before the season was over; talking up a move to specefic teams?

waste our time?
Would you prefer he jerk the fans around when everyone knows he's gonna be gone?  Nothing wrong with just being upfront about it.  I think this might even be better because you can cut the connection a little bit easier.  Realize it's just business and move on.  With Giambi people actually thought he'd resign and when he didn't people were/are so bitter.  With Barry it's so much simpler.

No way....
He was ready to re-sign and the owner refused the no-trade clause in the contract.....That one is all on the owner at the time....not Jason.  He was ready to take less and wanted a committment....Tough to blame him for that.

Yes you are right because Giambi said that
in spring training but then as the off-season began it was a string along game.

Tough to Blame Ownership
I'm glad ownership didn't give Giambi the no-trade clause.  Probably would have had to include the white-out of "Steriods" on the contract, as well.

Wrong
With Giambi, it was a never-ending string of increased demands. First it was the number of years. Then it was the amount. Then it was suddenly a no trade. And the owners did finally agree to include that. But it was never enough. Giambi was full of shit from the begining. He never intended to stay here. But because he's such an ass-kisser and so eager to ingratiate himself to everyone, he played this little game. That's also the reason he was more than happy to kick us in the nuts as soon as he got to NY. He knew they'd eat that up. It's also why he's now willing to talk crap about a teammate in the press. He knows it's safe to kick Arod. He's a tool.

I much prefer Zito being honest to Giambi's bullshit.

Not the way I read it
or feel about it in the least.  Totally disagree....but each to their own..I respect your opinion on it.

It's the way I remember it.
And not for nothing, but good riddance. One less roid monkey to worry about shaming our colors.

Exactly.
Everyone knows it's over, but he's here to play for now, and each time he takes to the mound becomes more meaningful. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Especially Mulder
I think most of us were prepared to see Hudson traded. But for me anyway, the Mulder deal was a shocker.

Mulder was shocker
but we knew his free agency period was on the horizon.

I'm still reeling over Terry Steinbach...
When he bolted for Twinkie land after the '96 season, I was cold... oh so cold... how could innocent little Terry leave us high and dry like everyone else?

The way I figure
if/when we win the World Series this year, we will have enough money to re-sign Zito.

by Philip Christy on Sep 22, 2006 1:31 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

World Series doesn't matter
It matters to my happiness, but it doesn't increase our odds of signing Zito.  Our payroll is unlikely to go beyond $70 mil even if we win the World Series, and Zito's $13-16 mil per year don't fit into a $70 mil budget.

Your post was dead-on accurate!!
I have never disliked Giambi because he left for more money -- that is your right as a "hard-working" American.
Giambi flat-out lied about wanting to stay in Oakland . . . every time he came out with a "demand" and the A's honored it, he changed his demand to something different.
His agents told him to play the "no-trade clause card" because they knew the A's had never before included that in a deal. When the A's finally capitulated and said "ok" (mid-season, mind you) Giambi basically said, "Oh, well, now it's too late."
I know this is going to sound very lame, but I know Giambi's wife, and I've heard this story verified on three different occasions.
Giambi simply felt it was in his best interests to keep his desire to play for NY "secret", so as not to turn the fans against him.
He never imagined his horrible bluff -- you have to be unbelievably naive to not see it -- would, in fact, turn the fans against him.
A's fans aren't altogether stupid . . . Tejada doesn't get booed, Damon doesn't get booed, Dye doesn't get booed . . . Giambi gets booed, because he lied.  Great player -- and you know what? GREAT GUY -- I like him a lot personally -- but he lied - plain and simple.
