AN weekend in Anaheim

I have booked my hotel room at the Doubletree Hotel Anaheim/Orange County where the team supposedly stays during trips to Anaheim.  I used Priceline and was able to reserve 2 nights (Friday and Saturday) at $55 a night (+taxes = $132ish total), which is at least 50% off the listed price (Doubletree's website starts at $99 a night).

If you need a room and want to chance this method, choose the name your own price and Disneyland area and bid $55 per night.  Odds are, the Doubletree will get selected as your hotel (I've used Priceline for my last couple vacations and have a pretty good idea of where I'll end up based on the bid.)

Secondly, if people are still interested in doing card stunts, I'll need someone to volunteer to order the cards (green on one side, yellow on the other).  I believe we'll need about 65-70 cards (5 rows, 13-14 seats wide) that are, 30 or 36 inches square? (I'm not sure what the dimensions should be).  I can take care of creating the stunts themselves.  I think the team will be juiced to see us showing our love and appreciation for the team - and really, who does card stunts in the opposing team's stadium?  Crazy!! Only AN ...

C) if you've received your postseason tickets (I picked mine up today - yay!), remember to check in here.

Finally, I'm hoping that we clinch this weekend, after all, athleticsgirl24 is making the trip all the way from Arkansas to see our guys.  I think 2 out of 3 should do it, which could put the clinching day on the 24th, my birthday :D.  The fat lady hasn't sang yet, but she's doing her scales, and the audience is filing in ...

P.S. I'd like to give thanks again to Baseballgirl for organizing this event. It's fans like her that make these things possible, and make AN a great place to be a part of.

P.P.S. The gauntlet has been thrown down by a fan at HH

see how the ?ber-nerds debate the PAPER QUALITY of the signs they plan to bring to Angel Stadium

I smell a challenge.

I'm looking forward to AN weekend Anaheim so much! I don't think I can help out making the cards, but I wanted to say thanks for doing all of the planning for that. I wasn't sure if it was still happening or whatever, but I think it'll be way fun if it does!

any number of things
look back at the old thread and see how we kind of designed stunts, and design some of your own.  We could also use help in figuring out the construction of the signs (ie do we just use posterboard or do we buy stuff)?

I'm looking into it.  I know that when they tried it my freshman year at 'sc, they did them with these plastic baggies - it was so weird.  I don't think we'll have a problem getting the cards into the stadium as long as we don't throw them.

Excellent
A few preliminary questions:
  1.  How many people will be participating?
  2.  What seating arrangement will the participants be in?
  3.  What size should the actual cards be?

Section V508 Row J Seats 12-25
Section V508 Row K Seats 11-25
Section V508 Row L Seats 10-25

So
Looks like we need BBG's assistance for #'s 1 & 2.  BBG?  As per #3, 2' x 2' sounds ideal - but being as that I really havn't tried this before, my guess is as good as _____.

apparently now the debate is between 2'x 2' or 3'x 3' ?

by noava22 on Sep 19, 2006 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

3' x 3' minimizes the gap between people
so it'll look like we have a solid background instead of the cards looking like square dots.  30" might also be workable (I'm not sure of the actual distance from seat rest to seat rest, but I'm sure it shuld be more than 24")

I know for sure that we have
A block 14 seats wide, 5 rows high.  We have a couple seats on the fringe (i think) for people who would rather watch the game or something ;)

That should be about 70 cards.

The cards should be 36 inches wide i think to cover an adequate amount of space.

So far, I've designed -

Let's Go A's!
Let's Go Oak land
AN
AL West #1
HR!
Kiss our A's
We L(heart)V our A's
MVP

For the most part, I'm trying to keep things simple and relatively recognizable.

Procuring the cards, yes.
I'll come up with little index cards or something for each seat so that person will know what color to flip to when.

Also, if cards cannot be purchased (for whatever reason) with different colors on each side, we can still do it with two cards of different colors.

by Rickeyfan on Sep 19, 2006 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh
are you taking care of the seat assignments?  I was under the impression I was going to be doing that.  I'm game for either way, though.

by noava22 on Sep 19, 2006 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

we can always have
more designs.  Nonetheless...

Right now I'm reading that we're going to have to make our own, basically buy some gatorboard and spraypaint it.  I think, through artsupply.com, we can get enough gatorboard for 60 signs for like $16, if I'm reading correctly.  The only thing we need, now, is for someone to volunteer the time to make them....

by noava22 on Sep 19, 2006 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seems like a lot of work
Is colored poster board available?  That way, all we have to do is cut it to size?  As for seating, I can come up with the little index card instructions for each seat.

by Rickeyfan on Sep 19, 2006 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

poster board is too flimsy
gator board is ridiculous.  i dont know if there are any art stores down here that carry it, though.  And it def. only comes in white or black.

by noava22 on Sep 19, 2006 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
Time to make them I have.  I'm thinking the best way would be to have a small get-together of volunteers to make them all at once (relatively quickly) while simultaneously enjoying some adult beverages.

I'll volunteer my place for this, but I'm in Oakland.  Thus, the cards would have to be sent down with someone from the Bay Area who is traveling down for the weekend.  Or does it make more sense to make the cards in SoCal?

Welll....
I work at a motorcycle dealership with a warehouse where we could paint, either in the parking lot or in the actual building, so I guess that's enough space.

If it's decided that
We'll be making them here, I'll organize the "card-party".  It might have to be this weekend to get them done in time, that shouldn't be a problem.  Let's just decide if that's what we're going to do soon, so I have some time to organize it.

Angels Stadium of Anaslime
policy as such:
Banners & Signs:
All banners and signs brought into the ballpark must meet the following guidelines: they must be baseball related and in good taste (as determined by Angels Baseball) cannot be commercial, political or obscene in nature; are not allowed anywhere within the playing field; may not be affixed to any ballpark wall, staff or pole; cannot cover up any advertising in the ballpark; and must be limited in size to 3 feet tall by 12 feet wide and be made of a fire retardant material.

ok i think what is more important
right now, at least, is figuring out who can take care of this, and when it can get taken care of.  I'd rather it be done in LA, so that transportation isn't an issue; however, we can have you (eamb) do it up north if need be.  Also, does anyone in the LA area know of any art supply stores and such?  I mean, I can go to the USC bookstore, but I know they don't have a lot...

ok, my local art supply store has
24" by 30" green posterboard, and yellow posterboard, for 70 cents apiece.  If stapled together and held up at a slight arc, they're sturdy enough to not be floppy.  So that's an option if people are willing to do some stapling.

If it's going to be done in the Bay Area, just let me know when, and I'll be there (unless it's during the games today, tomorrow or Sunday 9/24, because I have tickets to those).

Ironically, I will be in Oakland this weekend. I'm booking my flight right now. I have no plans outside the three A's games, but I have no car and no idea how to use public transportation (LA girl! ;)), but I do have time to help if the venue is close to a Bart ramp, or if someone feels like picking up a poor, lost baseballgirl for Saturday afternoon/night to work on the signs!

Here's my feeling on the thing
Ideally, we would have a team make the signs down south.  That way they are already near the ballpark, ready to go for the game.  However, understandably, there are probably more bodies here in the Bay Area that could come together on short notice to push this thing to completion -- I'm more than happy to facilitate this...

I think we should make a decision one way or another ASAP, so that the wheels can start turning towards this project getting under way, time is obviously of the essence.

ok.
we need foam board and spraypaint.  if you say a piece of foamboard will cost $2, and let's say we can only use one piece per sheet we buy...ok, well, thats 75 sheets at $2, cost is $150.  4 cans of spraypaint (2 forest green, 2 yellow) are probably ~ $10.  So we're looking at ~$160.  I know it's a lot to bankroll but we will be sure to pay you back - I think Blez intially volunteered to help chip in on this project.  I can wire you money, too, if you can't afford it upfront.

we ideally want the signs to be 3' x 3', but I think we can do 30" x 30" if it will help with costs.

Basically, cut the squares, spray paint, you're done.  They need to be uniform green and yellow, though, and we need each card to be green on one side and yellow on the other.

don't use metallic gold spraypaint.

:)

If anything else needs clarification, I'll be back in around an hour.

I can help too with the money.
And I still have a PayPal account set up with a credit card attached, if anyone wants to donate to the cause, I'll just use that card.

That would be great BBG
Can you post to that effect in the volunteer party diary?  I don't mind spending the money, it's just a  matter of actually having it to spend, which I'm not so sure about at the moment =/

I think we'll need
a LOT more spray paint than that.  Where did you see that price for foam board?  I'd like to verify the cost locally here since it's too late to order online...

question
does anybody here know a fast and easy way to make a doily for my dining room table? i can't find anything i like on marthastewart.com.

by yeswecan on Sep 20, 2006 11:46 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

No problem.
Here you go!  If you need help, we can probably have a doily party in November.  I don't think anyone around here is free until then. :-(

That looks complicated
good thing they'll have a couple weeks head start on us to get started.

P.S.  yeswecan - tell higz to check his pop culture references a little better.  Ricky Shroder's first name doesn't have an 'e' in his first name.  Unless higz was just channelling the Angel defense and their ability to throw up an 'E' whenever possible.

It's so cute!
HH is all jealous about our mad crafting skills and the fact that we can get along and work together and stuff. All the things they failed to learn after dropping out of kindergarten.

Nice!
Extending and confusing that analogy, this isn't high school where cool kids can call you a nerd to make you feel bad and clam up.  The nerds run the asylum on AN, and we have a good time to boot!  If YWC thinks he can embarass us, he has no idea where this falls on the pantheon of "embarassing things that happened on AN."

First time one of my diaries has reached 100 posts
I'd like to give thanks to all the AN fans that want to be a part of this, as well as the handful of HH trolls, even as they attempt to stuff the ballot in the poll.
