DLD 9/13 Twinkie Aftermath

First of all, MLB seems to have already picked the manager of the year:

http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060912&content_id=1658547&vkey=news_mlb &fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

But here's one guarantee: no matter what they do, Leyland is the AL's best manager this season.

Oh Ok, glad that resolved.

Finally, Macha has navigated through the usual plethora of injuries.

Usual?????? Give me a break.

And on Rich Harden: What I mean is that I have no idea where the A's starter/reliever/rehabber goes after today. Does he come back into the bullpen to stretch out his arm? Does he come into the rotation, backed up by another starter due to his pitch limit? ...Your guess is as good as mine here, but I'll be watching closely.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=5517

I don't know is aparently news for BBP. Thanks for that wisdom there...not.

BIG FRANK... please say its true.
General Manager Billy Beane is handling negotiations with agent Arn Tellem, and Wolff said he is confident of re-signing Thomas.

Also the A's are 0 for 10:

If the A's and Los Angeles Angels finish tied for the American League West lead, a playoff game would be played Oct. 2 in Anaheim. The A's lost the coin flip Tuesday to determine the site for the game. The A's have not won a flip in the past four years, going 0-10.

0.09765% is the number

Probabilities multiply
Chance of losing two coin flips is 1:2 times 1:2, equaling 1 out of 4.  Chance of losing three would be 1:2 x 1:2 x 1:2, equaling 1 out of 8 (12.5%).  Chance of losing ten flips is (1:2) x 10, or 1 in 1,024.

Anyone know where to get a deal on a decent little league bat?  My son is playing Winter ball and moving up from farm to the minors in the Spring so I need to ditch the t-ball bat.

I would think there would be a lot of deals this time of year but not really seeing them.

Hello My fellow Dumpers and Dumpettes
You know how much publicity that Moneyball book got and then afterwards it got a backlash of all these old fogies saying that nerdy machines couldn't win baseball games?  Well guess what, its about to get more publicity - Movie Publicity!

http://s171230060.onlinehome.us/NewsDescription-Movies-11654.htm

So who's going to play Chad Bradford?  Scotty H?  Finally, a movie about a worthwhile baseball team.  (Well the Cleveland Indians did okay with Major League I + II but don't get me started on Fever Pitch barf).

An article about El Nino includes this snippet:
This El Nino has caused drier-than-average conditions across Indonesia, Malaysia and most of the Philippines.

Indonesia is the most populous Moslem country with over 200 million people, while the Philippines have nearly 90 million. Both are major importers of U.S. grains.

The CPC Web site said surface temperatures were substantially warmer than normal by early September in the Pacific.

Apart from the middle paragraph being a total non-sequitir, I thought we all agreed that Moslem isn't he preferred terminology...

Since many expressed concern at the time
here's some follow up on beaned Mariner reliever, Rafael Soriano, who's being shutdown this year.

From Yahoo:

"Soriano still has minor headaches and is unable to perform physical activity. The right-hander will be monitored the remainder of the season by the Mariners' medical staff."

Thanks for the update 'topps
My question, and not that there are warning signs for that kind of injury...  but why in the name of all things Mariners was he even pitching?  He's one of the top relievers in the AL, he has had some shoulder problems...  My point is that he should have been shut down before this happened to get him healthy for next year.

by eamb on Sep 13, 2006 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

don't know if you are still reading this
but that's a very good question. Let me add it to the pantheon of inexplicable Mariner decisions.

There was talk of shutting him down before he even took the ball to the head. My guess is that they felt a little thin in the bullpen (Mark Lowe went on the DL, Julio Mateo broke his hand), they were hoping to keep him around.

Maybe they thought it would help his confidence to get back on the mound and face live batters again, to know he could.

It's weirdly fortunate and unfortunate that he got shut down. Unfortunate that it had to happen that way, but fortunate that it happened all the same...
