49ers Blog

athleticsfan4ever and I are starting up a blog dedicated to the San Francisco 49ers. It is called The Catch.

Star-divide

Currently it is located on Blogger. We hope to draw enough support to eventually start an SB Nation site for the 49ers. If you get a chance, please stop by and check things out, make a post or two.  Share your "Niners moment" with us, as athleticsfan4ever has. Our goal is to develop the same strong community that we have here on AN.

Check it out at:

Poppy
Is there no way for you to leave any comments?  If not, that's something we'll get fixed right away.  We just got this off the ground tonight.  Let me know if you can't leave any comments and I'll see what I can do.

We'll get it fixed.
If I had access I'd fix it now.  If you have any interest in being a contributor to the site, by all means sign up for an account.  I enjoy your contributions here, and I'm sure we could use them on the Niners blog.  If you're interested in contributing to the site more than just leaving a comment here or there, let me know.

I'm not sure
Zabat setup the blog, and I can't access the necessary areas to make the changes.  I'll have him change things so anyone can comment.  Probably just an oversight on his part.

I know we have our field sharing issues.  Sharing the Coliseum screws up both teams.

But yes, The Bay Area's REAL football season starts tonight!!!

I think a Niner fan just Threw Up in Thier Mouth:
Typical wine and cheese eating fair weather band wagoning fan of Championships.

Why don't you all just come out and admit that you are fans of Championships, not teams!!!

;)  Wow it must be football season or something.

I actually pull for the Niners now that Steve Young is gone, but I bleed Silver and Black and Green and Gold!!!

I never understand all of you A's fans
who like the 49ers?  WTF?
Oakland = A's, Raiders, Warriors.
SF = 49ers, Gnats.  Get it?

I'm not saying I love the Raiders or Warriors like I do the A's, but I do root for them over other teams.

Born in 1977 in San Leandro
Enter prime football fan years in 1983-84.

Raiders = Hell A
Niners = Bay Area

Super Bowl champs and classy teams didn't hurt.

Niners and A's for life. Best combo of any sports fan in the Bay Area, if I do say so myself. Which I do.

by Dog Days on Sep 11, 2006 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let's See...
Grew up in the Bay Area when the 9'ers RULED and the Raiders were in LA.

Then the Raiders came back and promptly destroyed my second home, causing a bit of bitterness toward the Silver and Black, reinforcing my 9'ers loyalty.

THAT is how you explain the "A's/ 9'ers Fan" phenomenon. Get it?

Exactly...
As I was growing up, there was only one local NFL team: the 49ers.  There was no way I was going to root for a team in La-La land.  That the Niners were consistantly winning just made them that much easier to root for.

I also hated what Al Davis did to Oakland when he left for LA, and for what he did to the Coliseum when he came back.

Redwood City native
(and current resident)

49ers former HQ was adjacent to a park & community center down the street from my elementary school.  I used to watch them practice (late 70's, before Super Bowls, before the practice fields were blocked from casual view), and we'd see the players around town all the time.  Football was the first sport I loved, I had no use for baseball when I was a kid.

As an adult, I started falling in love with baseball when my son started playing Little League.  I wanted to root for one of the local (BAY AREA) teams, and I picked the one that was losing (like the Niners were when I first fell in love with them).  That was the A's.

I didn't realize there was an actual wall built down the middle of the Bay along the Alameda/San Mateo County line.

My story
I live in Indiana, but when I first got into football and baseball the A's and Niners were THE teams.  I saw these guys on tv as much or more than anyone else, and I became a fan that way.

I'm a Colts fan now also, starting with the mid 90's with Jim Harbaugh and continuing now.  No matter what though, I'm still a Niners fan good or bad.  I stuck with the A's through the dark mid 90's, and I'm riding out the Niners struggles now.

Probably doesn't figure into your idea of someone who is a fan of both the A's and Niners, but that's the way it is.

Born in 1981
Raiders are an LA team to me.  I did not jump on the Niner Bandwagon (and I ain't jumping off now, damnit).  I respect what the Raiders have done in Oakland, but I grew up without them for most of my childhood.

As a Niner fan I must say that I am feeling as though I'm feeling a lot like a Raider fan recently as both fan groups are prone to bouts of living too much in the past (we USED to be great... not so much any more, but remember when...).

No disrespect intended (considering the vitriol some on this site have for the southern portion of our state), but FOR ME the Raiders haven't lived down being an LA team and I don't root for LA teams.

WZ doesn't cut it?
You've been to the forum right? There are spelling errors galore from the kiddie posters and some trolls here and there, but also a similar (and arguably larger) core group of intelligent posters like we have here.

Also, I always liked the forum format infinitely better than the diary format used at SB sites.  It's alot more organized for one thing.

by znk916 on Sep 11, 2006 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Never really liked forums
I much prefer threaded discussions - easier to follow who is saying what to whom. Diaries read more like conversations to me... which is what I like. I feel like the signal-to-noise ratio in a forum is generally a lot worse compared to a Scoop based site (ala SB Nation), or even a Slashcode based site.

The thing SB Nation sites also have though is the (somewhat) daily commentary by the main blogger(s). I can't say I find the commentary on 49erswebzone to be all that interesting.

by RickeySteals on Sep 11, 2006 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's the end goal
of the site Zabat and I have started.  Being the smart business man he is, Blez wants an established blog with a fan base to come into the SB Nation family.  That's what I want to acheive.  Stop by and check out the site.  Zabat should have things fixed by tomorrow morning at the latest as far as being able to comment and not being a blogger.com member.

I'm still biased in favor of forums but I know exactly what you mean.  There is definitely alot of unfocused discussions there, especially with no one necessarily 'leading' the discussion as with blogs and ensuing commentaries.  You see a ton of repeated topics as well.

I'm scared...
... but I've heard he's interested in either putting a team in LA or buying a team like the Browns. I don't want him running a different team!

I wish he would be allowed to buy the team back. If he were still around, we'd already have a new stadium, Donohoe wouldn't have been allowed to ruin the team, there would be free wine and beer for all 49ers fans in the bay area and we would finally have peace in the Middle East.

Did I mention that I missed Eddie D?

I know that baseball and football are separate sports but I just can't root for any SF sports team. Because I'm quite young, I did not grow up with the Raiders in LA. That being said, I'm not really a football fan but I would occasionally watch a game if I had nothing else to do.

What the hell is wrong with FOX!
Did everyone notice the new "Shzip" sound effect they added every time a play starts? That was unbelievably annoying, not to mention completely uneccessary. Is it a pre-requiste that to work for FOX sports programming you have to be fecal-minded?
