The MoneyBall Movie

There was a blurb in ESPN the magazine about Vince Vaughn and George Clooney vying to play Mr. Beane in the film adaptation.

Star-divide

Facing only those two choices, I would go with George Clooney, because he seems a little more like Billy than does Vicne Vaughn does, VAugh is a little too smarmy, and would probably make Billy look more like a swindler than a genius. Clooney could pull off the negotiations better, I could see him doing the part of the book from draft day where he's calling up Steve Phillips, gets the secretary, and asks "whos' the best looking GM in the league?"

I think Kevin Costner would be best in the role, he's done more baseball movies than anyone which is both good (Bull Durham) and bad (For the love of the game)

Yeah, I heard that on KNBR
Billy Beane is on right now. Just a minute ago, Ralph and Tom told Billy about that.

Kevin Costner is my personal deity.
Dear god, I love that man. And I don't even know why. He'd have to be in it SOMEWHERE, because it ain't a baseball movie without him (Howe? :-D).

Clooney I could see more as BB, but it would freak me out -- he's one of my LEAST favorite actors, I find the man creepy and distinctly unattractive. While Billy Beane is abso-friggin'-lutely as spicy like hole-in-the-wall-taqueria salsa. Mmmm. They could do better than Clooney for that man, someone with a little more super-stud-crazy factor.

And for a friggin' Moneyball movie, it seems a damn shame to overpay for talent. Let's bring in a C-list actor, pay league minimum for him, and then recast for the sequel when he gets too popular to afford. Quick, someone hit the B-movie shelf at the local video store!

Nah...
Try Bill Campbell.  Kind of looks like Beane, has the suaveness to pull off the charmer, roughness to pull off the bezerker.  Added bonus, he's of the B/C quality so he's not expense.  I have to agree with Kyli, it would be kind of ironic to cast an expensive actor to play Beane in a Moneyball movie.  It would be an obvious sign they didn't read the book.

More Moneyball
Former New Line and DreamWorks executive Mike De Luca is making himself right home at Sony Pictures Entertainment.  According to today's Variety,  De Luca has just made his first deal at the studio by acquiring the rights Michael Lewis' bestselling non-fiction book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game.

It could make a pretty cool flick....

Yeah that's kinda old
I did some looking around and apparently before this blurb, there wasn't much happening with the film.

From my defunct blog:

As of right now, the movie seems to be just at the script/pre-production phase. Clooney had been rumored for the lead role as Beane but there is some history between him and the current scriptwritter, Stan Cheverin. From 1999-2002, Clooney had been trying to make "The Catcher was a Spy" but the film never got greenlighted, apparently for good reason.

RB: Since Moe Berg keeps coming up, is the movie going to be made?

ND: I don't know, they just keep getting horrible screenplay after horrible screenplay. George Clooney really wanted to make it. And that would be great.

Almost all of Cheverin's scripts are connected to films that were in development hell, a term used to describe films that never got made due to studio, script, casting and all other sorts of changes.

In all likelyhood, it may take the A's winning the World Series for this movie to be made at all least of all true to reality.

Get Charlie Kaufman to write the script
THAT would be interesting.  Who cares about Moe freaking Berg.  I read that book, and while it was interesting at first, Berg just was a really, really sad man.  Not exactly feature film material.  Besides, Clooney already did Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (with Kaufman as screenwriter) about the former talk show host who moonlighted as a spy.  Kinda treading the same water.  At least there was some basis for that movie, Berg (while doing a small amount of work pre WWII for the intelligence community) just basically became a nomad traveling around the country, staying with random people while telling them hush-hush style "I'm just in town for a few days, can't say why" to give himself an aura.

I think Clooney as Beane could work.  I always hated Clooney, but lately he's done some stellar work - and he's a definate power player.  If anyone could get that movie made, it would be him.  Besides, what would the flick really be about?  Would it have MLB-sponsored footage of the real games, spliced into the movie?  That would be cool, instead of staging any games with hack actors (eg. Shoeless Joe batting on the wrong side of the plate).  I suppose Zito could probably play himself.

Seriously, though, Kaufman would, at the least, write a compelling script.

by Scottbass on Sep 1, 2006 6:05 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If I remember correctly
Kaufman was pissed off about that movie cuz Clooney butchered the script. I remember being excited to see that movie, but I rented it and couldn't finish it; it was pretty boring and tame, I thought. How could Kaufman write a boring movie? Then I heard Clooney fucked up the script, and it all made sense. I'm still a little peeved at Clooney for that - a Kaufman script is usually a work of art.

Moneyball: The Movie

Juiced: The Movie

(Personally, I don't want this movie to be made. The book has brought enough unfair criticism upon Billy and upon the A's organization. What kind of damage do you think the movie will do?)

it may not suck
if they can get a decent director, but i doubt they will.
clooney could probably do a decent beane, he's a much better actor than vaughn obviously...

i'm wondering if they're even going to try to get in at least some of the analysis-type stuff that's mostly narration in the book.  if not, it will be lousy.  maybe they could get it in if there's a michael lewis character following beane around as he writes a book about him.

i changed my mind already
i think it'll almost certianly suck, no matter what.

for example, how are they going to do the moneyball draft?  depo speaking some random name 99% of the audience has never heard of into the speakerphone, and the a's front office types getting all excited?  "we got teahen!"

the average moviegoer just won't get that, so they'll have to change everything so it's more exciting.

I still can't picture it...
...as a movie.  I'm not surprised they've churned out a lot of scripts and it's sucked.

It's really has to be LOOSELY adapted.

At the same time, I do agree that maybe the A's have to win it all in order to give it some oomph.

If they can do Fast Food Nation...
...and Adaptation, they can do Moneyball.

I've actually got a baseball script being repped in LA right now that I'm quietly confident will not only be picked up, but will be a great freakin' addition to the baseball movie pantheon.

Best of luck HOz!
Adaptation was great, but I doubt seriously there was not much really to adapt-- the movie centered around the whole problem of adapting unadaptable books to begin with.

In the meantime, let's get KR to sign with your script!

Hollywood, indeed...good luck with that, let us know if/when it's accepeted...I'm no movie buff, let me keep Rounders, The Machinist, and Fight Club and I'll let you destroy everything else, but I think this is pretty damn cool.  I'm guessing this isn't the first time you've worked with the "industry"?

Hence the nickname.
I used to work in production, then in entertainment journalism, so the door is open wide enough for me to shove a decent script through.

Thankfully, what I think is decent and what people in the business think is sellable seem to be one and the same, in this instance.

But then, these things go tits up pretty quickly sometimes, so no busting out the champagne just yet.

You are a genius. Kevin Spacey would be fucking perfect! He can do the charming Billy and the angry Billy.

In response to this being a horrible movie: yeah, it almost certainly will. But we're dreaming here. Besides, unless it's monstrously bad, just about everyone here will see it, right? And if they're talking about George Clooney playing Beane, it's gotta have something going for it.

Director / Writer Factor is far more important --
Universal has an option on the book and they have hired a writer but that doesn't matter.

Depending on how well the A's do from here on out will determine if an important (powerful) Producer and/or Director attaches themselves to the project and that will determine, more or less, the cast. If they win it all it is likely this movie will get very hot and then they will be fighting to get in on it like sharks in bloody water. It could do well for the PR of the team to say the least.

It seems the one important factor is how much, if any, control Michael Lewis has in approving the script, Director, etc. (he probably has very little, but who knows).

I personally don't think the Beane role should go to a "big" actor-- they would mess it up. Clooney and Spacey are good ideas but somehow they are not right either (and DEFINITLY not Costner).

if they can actually pull this off...
then I'm convinced there's no book that's off limits for silver screen adaptation.  I mean, will DePo get beat up by cutthroat gangs of scouts in an alley near the Coliseum?  Will one of the subplots, like the ups and downs of Hatteberg or Chad Bradford, or of course that certain fat catcher/fringe prospect from Alabama, be skewed into the prevailing theme of the film?  Will the writing of the 1985 Baseball Abstract be re-enacted in thrilling fashion?  Will Sandy Alderson be shown wearing combat boots as he yells at some minor league manager that he's fired if his team doesn't start to take more walks?  Will they then focus on the dramatic transition of a minor league squad from brain-dead high school hitters (channeling Larry Krueger there) to disciplined professionals with Boggs-like (or was it Will Clark) 20-13 vision?  Will...yeah I could go on, but I just can't see how one of the most compelling books I've read can be done justice as a film.  When they say the movie's never as good as the book, they're not lying.  The book lets you imagine what you want to imagine, lets you get away with convenient misinterpretations for entertainment's sake, basically can become what you want it to become, for better or worse...(though such fanciful distortions should not then pose as truth, you can't delude yourself that much, like most baseball insiders did).  (I just split up a four dot "hesitation-mark + period punctuation" there, unprecedented...anyway....)  Movies do one of two things: if they're compelling enough, then they shatter your illusions derived from reading and leave you with a feeling of disgust, or if they're not effective, then they just leave you bored and dismissive.  Lose-lose, needless to say.  The only reason I can count Fight Club among the few movies I could sit through is because I hadn't read the Palahniuk novel before I saw it.

I really think that the only way they could pull this off is if it's presented as if Billy Beane wrote a first-person account for the script--in other words, what Joe Morgan will assume about the movie if it does indeed get released.

I am no drunkard, I'm a hard-working man.

what the heck is the plot of this movie anyways?  Last shot is them losing in the division series for the 475th time in a row, and blah blah blah?  If they could show the A's win it all and close to "we are the champions" or something it would be cool
