Bartolo Colon - out for the year

According to Rotoworld, it was discovered that he had a partial rotator cuff tear.

Unfortunate for the Angels.  Good for the A's.

However, after watching Joe Saunders pitch the other night, it looks like the Angels have a decent fallback option.

---

Bartolo Colon, on the DL with right biceps tendinitis, was found to have a partial rotator cuff tear in an examination on Friday and will likely miss the rest of the season.

As suspected, Colon's recent elbow troubles were a result of the shoulder, which has bothered him since the second half of 2005. Colon will elect for rehab rather than surgery, and it is possible that he'll try a September comeback. However, he wouldn't be 100 percent if it happened. "I haven't gotten any formal direction from the medical department yet, but we'll talk and they'll have an assessment," manager Mike Scioscia said. "I know those things take some time. I would assume it's going to be lengthy. And with about seven weeks left in the season, it would seem doubtful that he's going to return. It would be a tall order for him to come back and pitch this season."

damn
colon was almost as bad as jeff weaver for them.
the angels rotation where ervin santana has the highest era really scares me...

Angels caught a break.
Injuries are never fun, but Colon is the fourth-best starter on their staff after Santana, Lackey, and Escobar.  Saunders probably will be as good or better than Colon might have been.

Colon was a pretty bad choice for Cy Young last year, too.  He wasn't the best pitcher on his team, much less the AL.

If they HAD traded Santana....
...what a reversal!

are you implying that colon is better than jered weaver?

I don't think Colon has been
healthy this entire season. When healthy he is a very good pitcher.

Yeah, he wasn't that good, but
Some of why the Angels are a team to be feared is that there was a sense that maybe they'd get Colon back and he'd be right.

Well, that's gone now. Also, that doesn't give them much room for error in the rotation--which now has two rookies.

I think the last week, this news, and the schedule ahead will make it very difficult for the Angels to catch the A's.

Of course, there are two other teams to worry about.

Rangers
Yea, now that the Angels pitching is falling back to earth (I called it weeks ago) and exposing their defence and offence, I'm honestly getting a bit more nervous about Texas.  I'm really hoping that the Angels can get at lest 1 win because I'd hate to go into this weeked 2.5 games back from Texas and fighting for first place.  The less reason we give them to try for that extra inch the better.

two months left in this season

Let's not get ahead of ourselves yet

Not getting ahead
I've just always thought the A's had a huge schedule edge in August and that the Angels needed to do much more than lose a game to us in the three weeks since the all-star break.

Well, they shouldn't be worried ...
about the future.

But we're talking about this year. And about this year they should be much more worried than they were a week ago.

this year
joe saunders has been pretty impressive this year, whereas colon has been slightly better than jeff weaver.

I wasn't all that impressed
with Saunders in his start against the A's. He was ok, but I thought his success reflected more the A's offense than his great potential. I have a feeling he'll get hit hard his next start--I hope so, in fact! But we'll see...Maybe I was just feeling grouchy about the A's offense that day...

The Angels have to be a little concerned
In the first two games they threw Weaver and Slingblade and lost, now I guess it will be Santana and Saunders.  I am hoping also that Texas doesn't sweep the Angels because when they come to Oakland they are going to face Loaiza and Komine in the first two games, nothing for the A's to be excited about, and I think Komine will be up against Millwood, not a good matchup.
