Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

DLD: Street to 15 day DL

And we've called up Ron Flores.  Enter our new closer, Chad Gaudin?

link

Reds can't get no satisfaction at the end of the game either, as Unsteady Eddy Guardado is also placed on the 15 day DL: link

Vernon Wells will apparently be on the block at the end of the season, we're mentioned as possible suitors (as is the rest of the AL west): link

Tom Glavine might be out for the year with a blood clot, sending the Mets' world series aspirations spiraling down

Sidney Ponson can't even cut it with the lowly yanks

And our own Susanne Slusser discusses how Bobby Crosby showed up one Mr. Redman after the same pitcher showed disgust at Bobby booting a ball a mere two years earlier

And finally, GASP, an article from Boston praising the genius of one Billy Beane?  Read on:

He was killing time at the airport waiting for his usual flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles, where he spends weekends with his family. This is one major reason why Billy Beane decided not to accept a lucrative offer to be Boston's general manager in November of 2002. The proximity of the Bay area to Los Angeles allows him time for the family life he cherishes.

And things have worked out well for him. Beane's Oakland A's keep finding a way to stay atop in the AL West, sometimes defying logic, often flying under the radar. In some ways, the current team might represent Beane's best work.

Enjoy dumping.

Harden stepping in for Huston
Well, it's clear the baseball Gods hate us, because th day a player gets off the DL, another one MUST get on, right?

What are the options now?

1.Justin Duchscherer

He has the experience from earlier this year, and frankly, he's the A's next best reliever. He's also the hottest reliever.

2.Chad Gaudin

Not as unrealistic as we would think. He's been turning in great performances. But, perhaps he is still not ready for that kind of role, as the walks do show up.

3.Kiko Calero

Like Gaudin, he's not as high on the chain as Duke. He's also been a little shaky.

Clearly Duke is the best option. But there is a sleeper option.

Rich Harden-

He threw from flat ground yesterday, and Macha is quoted (in the previous link dump) as saying "Harden could step in and close", but that he wouldnt' be ready stamina wise for a starting job.

If Streets injury is a long one (which is entirely possible the way this has unfolded), Harden could become the A's new closer in early September. And go two innings at a time!

I like the Gaudin idea
Stuff-wise, he's as good an option as anyone we've got.
"The first night, we were right there," Bradley said. "All we needed was a couple of touchdowns, and we would have had them."

re
Is Kennedy throwing 93 like he was earlier in the season?  If so, I'd say he's the dominant reliever in our pen.  He blows batters away at that velocity.  Duke can close, but Kennedy should take Duke's job.  I'm not worried about the pen at all.

Guadin has a long way to go.  He's a fine fourth arm out of the pen.

I would absolutly love to get Wells
I think he would be awesome. Think of this lineup!

C1 Kendall
RF Kotsay
LF Bradley
CF Wells
DH Thomas
1B Swisher
3B Chavez
SS Crosby
2B Ellis

Or, if we want Barton on the team next year, and can somehow, maybe deal Kotsay to the Jays with the package, how about...

C1 Kendall
RF Bradley
CF Wells
DH Thomas
LF Swisher
3B Chavez
SS Crosby
1B Barton
2B Ellis

I like your thinking
Kotsay would fill the hole Wells left.  Problem is, what else do we give them?  It would have to be someone mighty good.

slow down, bud
no way does chavez EVER start off batting 7th.  If we keep Kotsay, he slides down.  I see the lineup going as follows:

Kendall
Bradley
Wells
Chavez
Thomas
Swisher
Kotsay
Crosby
Ellis

Also, to get Vern Wells we might actually have to package some good people.  Like, I'm thinking along the lines of Barton/Duke/Windsor, at the VERY least.

Barton has fallen behind
due to injury. I didn't think that he would start with the A's in 2007 anyway, but this definitely seals it for me. He is likely to spend the entire season at Sacramento next year (September callup likely). Why? He doesn't yet have a position to play. His defense at first base by all accounts is less than average. Both Swish and DJ would be better than him there...plus, he still has offensive work to accomplish at AAA before he gets called up.

Kotsay in TO
No way Kotsay plans on that turf with his back.

Wells is out of our league probably
And besides, that, it's probably not true (Wells "reportedly" told the Jays that he won't sign a contract extension, Wells and JP btoh deny that ever happened)

If he was on the block, you'd have some amazing center fielders on the block next year (Andruw Jones as well)

Who will go down
when Halsey is called up? I guess Flores now that he is back up. Do we then leave Halsey up until Sept.1 when the rosters expand?
