Daily Link Dump 8/19: Update on Huston

Yeah, yesterday stunk to high heaven.  And for those of you wanting Huston Street injury information, it's a right groin strain and he's considered day-to-day.

Star-divide

It's almost enough to send us to the DL.

In the Chronicle's notebook, the last time the A's played that many innings in one day, they looked flat the next series.  Does last mean last night the A's weren't even flat yet?!?!  Gah!

Bobby Crosby was activated from the DL.  We'll see if he actually helps.

Well, at least it our doubleheader was relatively quick...

Giants catcher Mike Matheny is done for the season after too many blows to the head.  Jason Kendall, who estimates he's had seven concussions in 11 major league seasons, weighs in on this related article on baseball concussions.

The Kansas City Star has a feature on Big Hurt.

My nearly 8-week-old son is now sitting on my lap watching me type this.  I feel better already. :)

Good morning AN! What a nice, beautiful Saturday morning! I'll just ignore the fog, the cold, and Huston's groin.  <sob>

4pm game time, hopefully our guys are sleeping off whatever they did to get over last night...

There's no crying in baseball!

Quick, reserve the username FutureHuntsvilleStar
Just wait until he's critiquing your prose.

Two strange but ostensibly true baseball notes courtesy of Deadspin.

First, Kevin Brown can dump his grass clippings anywhere he damn well pleases.

(Kevin Brown's neighbor Michael Haws) "found Brown throwing grass clippings over the fence into Haws' yard on Breighton Court, which backs up to Brown's multimillion-dollar estate on Brown's Ridge.  When Haws confronted Brown, the two men argued and Brown pulled out a gun and told Haws he'd better not come onto Brown's property, the report stated."

The rest of the story: Brown strained his groin while throwing the grass clippings, pulled an oblique muscle while drawing his gun, and lacerated his trachea answering the phone to tell the reporter "no comment."

And Torii Hunter appears to be a modern day Burrhus Frederic Skinner, as he advances the field of negative reinforcement behavior modification...on his baseball glove.

Twins center fielder Torii Hunter microwaves his glove for 30 seconds if he fails to make a play the night before. After an error, it's two minutes. "That's punishment [for the glove]," Hunter said. "You do something bad, you go to hell."

Someone please tell me Torii doesn't have children.

That will teach him.
When Torii Hunter Jr. doesn't clean his room, just give him a little nuking.

Kevin Brown's retired?
I thought he was just still on the DL...

I thought about FutureHuntsvilleStar before, but that would imply that we would move back to Huntsville, Ala., someday, and that's not in the cards right now.

Hmmm...Maybe FutureAsOwner, so I can someday score free season tickets for life. ;)

Rosenthal on Fox
just said that "scouts have been worried about Street's workload lately.  His arm angle has been getting lower.  Macha overusing him...trying to use him like he's Mariano Rivera."
But if your life is such a big joke, then why should I care?

No TV
Normally I'm sad when the games aren't televised. Today, I'm a little glad the next two games aren't on TV 'cuz I don't know if I can handle another 6 innings of nearly shut-out, followed by an Oakland implosion.
Thank god for Frank Thomas. I was actually happy for a little while. Otherwise I would have fallen asleep at 8pm on a Friday night :(

Let's go get 'em today!  {sob}

Aww.
Still hard to work without Bill. :-(
He made me sound so much better, and I would like to think that the relationship made us both better, although it would be presumptuous of me to think that I helped Bill a whole lot.

We're talking about the greatest sportscaster of all-time here.

The Good News
  • Loaiza is pitching really, really good right now.  We're going to win a lot of games with him on the hill over the next 2.3 Years.  We should all be psyched.
  • Kansas City is playing good baseball right now.  Gotta give credit where credit is due.  That City deserves to see some victories.  Well Done!
  • Boston lost to NYY twice yesterday!  Ex-Teammate, Johnny Damon, got it all started for the Yanks.  How do you think their feeling today?
HELLO, PENNANT RACE!  YOU GOTTA LOVE IT!

What the hell happened yesterday?
Maybe I've been watching too much "My Name is Earl" lately, but I have to wonder if yesterday was karmic retribution for something an Athletic or ANer did.

So, what happened?

--Did Eric Chavez turn down an autograph seeker because he wasn't Mexican enough?
--Did Crabcakes help Paris Hilton break her vow of celibacy?
--Did Huston drink a beer?  O'Doul's still counts, Huston!

--Did Jennifer leave the ballpark early because she thought we had the game in the bag?
--Did Cindi start using her MySpace page to do naughty things?
--Did Sal let a slide rule touch the ground?

What gives, people????

last night is why i hate double headers.
the A's had the chance to really pull away from the rest of the division and instead they let the angels and the rangers back in.

<Rubs eyes>
So yesterday really did happen?  Bitches.
I stumbled out of bed at about 10:20 this morning and the alarm clock said 11 something (long story).  I panicked because I thought today's game was a 10 AM start.  And what really sucks is when I over sleep and the A's playing, I have to turn on the radio, hold my breath, and wait for the score.  Ugh.  Anyway, I tripped over... something... and turned on the radio.  The game wasn't on.  Blah.  <Yawn>

Ugh
I got an e-mail from my college's alumni relations coordinator. Apparently, they are planning a alumni get-together at McAfee for the second game of the Boston series. Be prepared for a bunch of pretentious people in spanking new Red Sox caps.

Fred Funk must win the PGA Championship
I'm not much of a golf fan, and the club and raquet set wouldn't get the joke anyway, but I really want Fred Funk to win the PGA Championship this weekend at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois.  The headline might then read:

Extra innings
Just looked on my digital cable TV guide and it says the A's games is on EI.  Not sure whether to believe this or not because neither FSBA or the Royals station seem to be doing the game.

Not sure whether I want to see it.

Harden update:
Rich Harden, who went on the disabled list June 5 with a sprained ligament in his right elbow, threw off a flat surface again on Saturday.

Macha also met with Harden before the game.

"He was pretty positive about how he felt," Macha said. "He's got a long ways to go yet. I just wanted to see where he was and how he is feeling about himself, make sure we've got good focus on what we're doing and a plan. He had a little smile on his face and said he'd pitch before the year is over."

While Harden may return in September, it would likely not be to the rotation as he would not have enough time to build up his pitch count.

"To me if he was able to pitch right now, he would be in the 'pen," Macha said. "He could go right into closing games for us. But he's a long ways off. That is just kind of speculation on my part. Once he gets on the mound and starts throwing off the mound, then we can talk about what kind of role."

And you gotta love
the SF Chronicle's headline:  "This time, Crosby shows up Redman."  :D
Two years ago, Bobby Crosby was extremely displeased when starter Mark Redman stepped off the mound and made a gesture of irritation after the shortstop failed to turn a double play.

On Saturday at Kauffman Stadium, fate took a delicious turn for Crosby. First, Crosby cracked a two-run double off Redman, then he threw out a runner at the plate the following inning. Finally, with the game tied in the seventh, Redman made an error on Crosby's bunt, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

The Jamie Moyer era is over in Seattle.
He's been traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for two A-ball pitchers, neither of whom sound overwhelming.

Theo's turn
Boston is truly the capital of the WHYDFML mentality. From Dan Shaughnessy's Sunday Globe article:

"The computer-geek management style has been thoroughly exposed in the last two days and there's a perfect storm brewing upstairs on Yawkey way."

Move over, DePo. Can anyone even tell me what connection Shayghnesy is making between these two sentences?

"The Yankees have batted around five times in three games. One wonders if perhaps cyberowner Henry has seen enough spread-sheet baseball for one season."

What? Yesterday demonstrated that "computer-geek management" leads to monster offensive outbreaks from your opponents?

That's some good RedSoxenfreud, right there.
