It is Time....

Last week I attended my first Oakland game (actually two of them) in quite sometime as I have been living out of the Bay Area for a few years now.  I was able to take my 17-month old son to his first game ever.  Now, I live in Boston and could've taken him to the fabled den of Fenway, but why would I do that to my first born son?  or anybody's child?
Anyway, as my sense of nostalgia grew when I entered the Coliseum last week, I got to thinking about those games way back in the 70's and 80's and how many, many fans, usually Boosters and old-timers, used to bring cowbells and the like to the games and ring them when Rickey would steal a base, or Campy would put one into the hole, or Lansford would wiggle his bat at the plate, etc.  All that bell-ringing made for a great atmosphere, especially at a night game.  So much so, that upon my arrival back home, I put my recently purchased Oakland Athletics World Series DVD in and watched with pride as our fans rang those bells and made some historic runs at winning the Championship.
I ended up talking to one of these old-time Boosters at one of the games last week and she was hilarious and quirky...a total A's novelty!  I asked her about bringing the cowbell tradition  back, and we both agreed it was time!!  I would think those of you who have been around for awhile know what I'm talking about.  It is a unique and quirky Oakland tradition.
Now I know some of you might be thinking "don't mess with the mojo now, for godssakes!!"...and I am down with that by all means.  And I certainly dont want to cause any rift with any drummers in the bleachers, either.  I just was wondering if anyone else out there felt the need to start bringing cowbells, handbells, etc out the the games and start ringing them to drum up some of that old Coliseum magic.  I know the place is old and everyone dismisses it and the A's are a stepchild, etc.  All the more reason to keep this team ours and ours alone by honoring our weird ways a la Finley, mules, mustaches, white shoes and Hot Pants.
I suppose this is just basically a musing on the atmoshphere created by all the great fans at the Coliseum, bolstered largely by the need to see and hear that atmosphere from a long distance via TV and the internet.  I just thought that with the all the weird stuff that this season has brought (King passing, Steele missing, injuries, Larry Davis, abysmal play followed by win after win...again) it would perhaps be fitting to bring forth some additional quirks.
This team looks pretty solid right now and is really just beginning to gel...it would be something to win it all this year of all years.  This is baseball after all, and stranger things have happened.
I'll be listening and watching to see if bells begin showing up slowly but surely as this club becomes more solid , makes the playoffs and wins its 5th Oakland Championship.

That's great!
And when you're at the game tonight, AsFoLife, really explore the stadium space.  I mean, really...explore the space.  I like what I'm hearing.

cow bells
did you see the A's game this year where a fan actually caught a foul ball inside the cow bell.  It was a line drive, million to 1 shot.

They kept showing the guy, and he was trying to get the ball out so he could bang on the bell again.

Bring em back.  The more MoJo the better!

That was funny
At one point he had his wife/gf try standing on the bell to squash the rectangularness out of it so the ball might come out easier...  LOL

Obligatory joke...
I've got a fever... and the only cure is more cowbell!

Now that you mention it, I do remember the cowbells from those games in the late 80's. Maybe the drum section needs its own Gene Frenkle. Although, they do have a damn fine groove going right now as it is...

I WAS WONDERING
At a few college basketball games that I went to, if the home team was winning in the final few minutes, the fans would bring out their keys and shake them to signify it's time for the opposing team to go home.  I think this would work at the A's game.  Along with the cowbell, the jingling keys could add a lot to the Oakland fan experience.  JINGLE YOUR KEYS PEOPLE!!!

we had this at my college
the announcer would go "key play! get your keys out! key play!"  and the drunk kids obliged.

Buy a Cowbell at any music store --
that sells drums and other percussion instruments. In the Santa Rosa area you can buy them at Epiphany Music on 4th street. Many cowbells there.

We tried the cowbell:
Just ask Kenny (SAM).

Repeated banging of the cowbell as an instrument becomes pretty annoying.

The sound I like is the sound of the cowbell with the ball inside of it that one of the old ladies would shake when we scored or got a good hit.

I like that!!!

In fact that mixed with small dosed of Cowbell on certain beats would be cool.

(My Two cents)

I agree
I think I would have to go fling myself off the 3rd deck if I had to listen to constant cowbell-beating...  but (brief) cowbell-shaking at key moments is cool!

was at a game
when a fan went up to the third level got on the tarp and slid down a little ways and ran out the exit near. security ran up there but guy was gone

by smasfan on Aug 16, 2006 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I was wondering if that could be done...
without gaining so much speed that at the bottom you plummet right over the railing down to the second deck.

Wish I Could Bring Mine
...My mother-in-law got creative a few years ago and bought a cowbell and fixed an A's logo fixed to it as a Christmas present. It became the pride of the neighborhood amongst the bovine A's fans in our midst... My wife hates it when I ring it after every A's victory especially in the eve after our kids are asleep.

Wind chimes in the 3rd deck.....
Maybe the front office would allow us to stategically place thousands of wind chimes in the upper deck. That would be sweet. The house of chimes! Freak out the opponent.

called 'em dingers.  And I'm a big fan.  The clapper fell out of my old, beat up cowbell so I went custom.

I got my cowbell engraved with the 70's Swingin A's logo and the words Holy Toledo.  cowbell.com
