Recall DJ NOW!

Great win last night, but this offense still needs more pop.  The answer is just a few miles away in Sacramento.  Time to recall DJ.  He continues to hit like crazy.  This is not a AAAA player.  He was a RoY candidate last year until he slumped late in the season.  He's legit.  Crazy to keep throwing Swisher out there every night - he hit .188 in July after hitting .204 in June.  Time to say it - the emperor has no clothes.  At least in June he kept his OBA decent, but in July it was .310.  This is not an offense that can continue sustaining this kind of production, at least not when there are options.

Pitching in AAA....
Is not very good this year. Not a lot of pitching prospects. DJ is feasting on pitching that will be in AAA a couple more seasons. A big difference than what he saw in the bigs.

I wish BB would cycle his other young players
through Sacramento as needed.  Swish has been really struggling for the past month, even worse then DJ was.  I love the "There's just no room for him on the roster right now."  Well we have our SS hitting .230 and is hurt and our first baseman in a deep slump and has mono because he's making out with chicks at 3 AM after a bottle or two of grey goose!  And then we don't have room to send one of them down for someone who is absolutely raking?  Just a 10 day confidence boost.  DJ gets treated like the redheaded step child in this group of younger players.

i agree, bring back DJ
i don't know about the emperor not having any clothes, but swisher can alternate between OF and 1B (and the bench when he's hitting .100 like he is now).

i just don't want to see kotsay at 1B ever again.  it makes no sense, he's only useful as a CF, it's like having ozzie smith as your DH.

there's no reason to not bring DJ back up.  if he still can't hit major league pitching, they can always send him right back to sacto, right?

How about bring up DJ?
D'Angelo Jiminez that is, Ellis can't hit a lit and Jiminez has a .350 career OBP and the same range factor and fielding as Ellis...

another good idea
how about bringing both DJs up.

jimenez can replace perez, who would have a month to figure out how to hit again in sacto...

Perez is
out of options he would have to clear waivers first, that is why he has not been sent down this year while creating a blackhole on the roster.

someone's gotta back up chavvy
Fact is we've got a couple of fragile infielders out there, Crosby and Chavez. We have two infield backups: Scutaro and Perez. We can't do with less. If you lose Perez you don't open up a slot for DJ; you have to bring up Rouse, or someone else who can play some of 2B/SS/3B.

DJ's problem is he can only play 1B. The offensive production standards for that position are high.

by matthias on Aug 1, 2006 9:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Having a backup 3B is pointless
if you're unwilling to play him when your starter needs a break. Chavez was hurt and he still got sent out day after day.

True dat.
If there's one thing that management has done this year that has hurt the team, it's in not sitting Chavez when even an Angels fan could have seen he needed to hit the DL.

I still don't understand their rationale
"We knew Street wasn't going to be able to play for 10-11 days, but we'd we'd rather play short-handed for 8-9 games instead of placing him on the DL and lose him for 12 and play at full strength."

I'm paraphrasing, but if someone could explain the logic to me in terms my 3 year old could understand I would be greatful.

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

by grover on Aug 1, 2006 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions

Here's what it is:
It's the fear of being short-handed.

Chavez should have been on the DL, but if he had been, then we'd have no replacement for 3rd if Perez broke down.

Melhuse should play 1st base when Swisher is unfit to play (like now), but won't, because if Kendall got hurt, we'd have no replacement.

Street should have been benched, but wasn't because, if someone else got hurt and Street wan't there, we wouldn't have a ready replacement.

It's ALWAYS a case of the fear of 'but what if' with Macha. That's what so few of our backups actually play - because they don't have backups.

It's an interesting concept you've hit upon..
...this 'fire Macha now'... perhaps there's something in that.

You know what would be a really good idea? Maybe the next time either of us posts a diary we should include some kind of poll to see if other people would be interested in the idea.

We're going to get confused with...
..so many DJs.

I propose Johnson stay DJ, and Jimenez become D'J.

DJ / Bocachica / Jimenez
I would like to see all three of these guys in Green and Gold, but we'll probably have to wait until September 1st.

Swisher should go on the 15-Day DL - He's playing at 75%, and that's not going to cut it right now.

swish should get time off, period
the mono definitely affected his game. he needs to recuperate and put on the weight he lost (at least 10 pounds, according to him). DL might not make sense, but if we can find a way to either call up DJ and sit swish for at least 5-6 games, or even play kotsay at first for a week and let payton be our CFer, we should do it. swish is clearly not physically back yet, and the rest will help him recover quicker.

Samson Effect
I think I have the real answer behind the slump....he got his hair cut, thus his power! HA!

I understand that we are in the crunch, but if he's not fresh and healthy in the home stretch then what good will all of this have been for.  He needs to get healthy and clear his head of whatever has been bothering him.

by Leesa on Aug 1, 2006 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

The Perez situation is crazy
He seemed like a nice throw in to the Bradley deal, but he is now creating a blackhole as AF in London noted.  There are so many other players who could be having more of an impact on the roster - including giving Macha more comfort in resting Chavez when needed.  I really hate Beane's use of the roster sometimes - the conservatism on DLing players, the slow movement of some guys onto the ML roster, and retaining useless pieces because they might be claimed on waivers?  Good riddance!

by boilerdan on Aug 1, 2006 8:34 AM PDT reply actions

perez's problem is ginterfication
macha screwed this up last year, too. he should have found more ABs for perez earlier in the season so he wouldn't be so "cold". this certainly has had an effect on his hitting. using him more frequently would have a) gotten him more comfortable at the plate, and b) given chavez or other infielders more rest from time to time. the one thing about perez is he's a hitter. he's done it at every level, and he probably only needs more ABs to be able to contribute, but its going to be hard to get him some now. i'm still in favor of playing him at least once a week, though, or at least getting him ABs later in games that are essentially decided (though we obviously don't play many of them!).
