Chavez and the lineup

Am I crazy to think that batting Chavez leadoff is a good idea? His arm injuried apparently prevent him from hitting the ball, but he still walks a lot. Why not bat him leadoff? He's not slow, either.

My lineup:

  1. Chavez  3B
  2. Kielty  OF
  3. Thomas  DH
  4. Swisher OF
  5. Johnson 1B
  6. Melhuse C
  7. Crosby  SS
  8. Payton/Kotsay CF (Bradley once he's back)
  9. Ellis/Perez 2B

but Ken Macha is the manager... damn

I think we should sit
Chavez, but put Swisher in the leadoff spot.  compare Kotsay and Swisher, they have both been in terrible slumps for 3 weeks, but in that time Swisher has walked 23 times in 20 games, while Kotsay has done nothing but hit nice fly balls.
Macha is in a bind but being Macha doesn't realize it, but Kendall, Ellis or Kotsay are not options.

2-run homer
If he didn't hit one last night than I would agree.  I think we should move Ellis into the spot because it could be no worse than Kotsay or Kendall IMO.  I don't think he's swinging the bat well enough but I would rather establish a lineup and start sticking with it more often.

Crossed my mind yesterday
When Chavez dumped a single into center. He seems really weak right now, but he's still getting on base. (.357 OBP .250 SLG in the last week)

It might be something to try until the AS break, but I think he's going to rake in the second half if he can get some prolonged rest. I hope he gets the day before the break and maybe a couple of days after off. Let Perez start a few in a row.

Perez play???
But that would put him over his one at bat per week limit!

Is he still on the team?
I've never seen a team utlize bench guys less than one coached by Ken Macha.  Remember that shitty lineup we threw out in Game 1 against the Yankees and we still won?  That happens more often than our coach realizes when players are well-rested.

Agreed
I'm inclined to say--put Chavy on the DL now and give Perez two weeks of playing time.  He may have only five hits to date, but give him 70 at bats and he'll hit higher than the .141 Chavy's been hitting for his last 71.  Plus, I don't want to have to read any more SF Chron itemettes like this one.  "Chavez is sorely in need of rest," says the headline.  Really?  Then how about we REST HIM?  Honestly, DL him or shut the hell about it, one or the other.

Chavez
I think he should just sit out after the Angels series through the all star break. Get some rest.

ummm....
Isn't that the plan? To sit after the Angels series? (The Angels series is the last one before the ASB)

I say we drive our Chavy to his civvies...
...assuming they're dry.  He looks just sick up there--swinging through pitches, without any contact or apparent power.  It's clear he's dying to help, but I think he helps best now by getting over his arm probs for the second half.  YMMV.

Bat Kielty leadoff
Get Kotsay out of there.  He is killing this team and lineup.

Last night...
...Chavez made one absolutely sterling play, that didn't matter.

Kenny Boy--Give him a rest!!
