Open Thread: Game 84 - A's vs. Tigers

Baseball is a funny game sometimes. For instance, if someone had asked any of us on Sunday how the A's would do against the team with the best record in the MLB after seeing the sweep by Arizona, I think the answer is 'not very well'. But that's why the games are played on the field, and not on paper.

But on the field, Kenny Rogers has been amazing facing the A's, and especially at the Coliseum. And Saarloos was shaky at best during his last outing. Which, on opposite day, means that the A's have a great chance of getting the win today, and the series sweep.

Make no mistake about it; to win a series against the Tigers is a great acomplishment, which we've already done. But I think I speak for all of us when I say that we're looking for a little icing. And a really great pounding couldn't happen against a nicer pitcher.

Lineups:

Granderson
Polanco
Rodriguez
Thames
Guillen
Monroe
Gomez
Shelton
Inge

Ellis
Kendall
Crosby
Thomas
Payton
Swisher
Kotsay
Kielty
Scutaro

for once I was right
I had actually expressed here Monday that I thought the A's matched up well against the Tigers and that I thought they could take the series...which they have done.

I would love it for them to sweep, especially since Kenny Rogers is pitching today. But no predictions for today!! ;-)

Let's Go Oakland!!

I agree with all that.
I admit i picked us to lose the series but we can SWEEP it now!

Anybody know
what Polanco is batting against the A's in his career?  It has to be over .500 / When I settled in to me seat at the game yesterday, I was STOKED he got the day off, nto so lucky today...

Over the last 3 years (2003/4/5)
in 36 AB against us he's hitting 0.472 / 0.500 / 0.722 / 1.222 !

And this year
in 17 AB, 0.471 / 0.500 / 0.529 / 1.029 so at least we're holding his slugging down a bit !

I would think they would wait until after the "32nd man" voting, and take someone who didn't win that to replace Manny.

Its Magglio
I read somewhere that Ozzie is going to take Magglio Ordonez for Manny's spot.  Travis Hafner would probably be next in line, then Schilling, Mussina.  Swish is getting screwed

by closetasfan on Jul 5, 2006 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I think
Ozzie is taking Dusty Baker's son as a bat boy so he can order Jim Thome to run over him, cos that's playing the game right.

I've wondered
Why every team doesn't have their pitchers wear Kenny Rogers masks when they pitch against the A's. Or put Kenny's picture up on the scoreboard for the entire game. The guy just gets in our players' heads. (Granted he is good.)

Haven't gone through all the diaries posted today but I was just checking ESPN's Insider trade rumors and they have a picture of Greg Maddux and the three teams they list as interested are the A's, Dodgers, and Padres.  I wonder if we're really interested or if ESPN is just stirring things up?

by oaktoon on Jul 5, 2006 1:17 PM PDT reply actions

Sadly, agree.
Saars would be more valuable as our groundball specialist in the 'pen.

Why isn't he as successful?  Kirk relies on groundballs to succeed, and this year his GB/FB is 1.73 as opposed to 2.34 last year.  He always allowed baserunners - lots of singles and walks - but they would always be erased on DPs and stranded on groundouts.

But this year, Kirk has allowed 12 - check, 13 - homers already, compared to 11 all of last year.  Ball's not staying on the ground, and once it gets in the air, bad things can happen.

Can intangibles exist? Only the ones you can touch.

by salb918 on Jul 5, 2006 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions

but why would ...
... his GB/FB ratio increase by being sent to the 'pen?

I think Nico made a great, great point over the weekend (too lazy to find link) that Kirk, because he's a sinker pitcher, needs to be "overused" to be effective -- which basically means starting him (on regular-to-short rest). If we try to make him Chadford (RTOGY) or Yabu (NMUGY), his pitches may be even worse.

He's an intelligent man to talk to, but he smells like rat urine @('.')@

by monkeyball on Jul 5, 2006 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Because a 1.73 GB/FB
rate is still good.  Quite good, and more than adequate for your RTOGY.  Just not what you need from a starter who walks more guys than he strikes out.
Can intangibles exist? Only the ones you can touch.

by salb918 on Jul 5, 2006 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

yes, but ...
... are you therefore disagreeing with the Nico Hypothesis? Because I think the NH would indicate that Kirk's GB/FB ratio would decrease even further with such usage.
He's an intelligent man to talk to, but he smells like rat urine @('.')@

by monkeyball on Jul 5, 2006 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd need a minute to look
such things up, but...

...my recollection is that Saars records the groundballs quickly and effectively in the early innings of games.   Using him out of the bully would get him work on fewer days of rest, not more -- so the NH would indicate that Saars's sinker will sink more if used out of the 'pen, and this dovetails well with my (unsubstantiated) observation that Saars has his sinker working early in the game.

Can intangibles exist? Only the ones you can touch.

by monkeyball on Jul 5, 2006 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

The best I can come up with
for now is that on pitches 1-15, Saars holds opponents to an ISO<.100.  This rises quickly to an unacceptable .200 on pitches 16-30.  Not ironclad proof of my hypothesis, but still...
Can intangibles exist? Only the ones you can touch.

by salb918 on Jul 5, 2006 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

feh ...
... pitches 1-15 will usually be to the first 2-3 guys in the lineup, who are usually medium-to-high-OBP/low-SLG guys; pitches 16-30 are usually against the #3-5 guys in the lineup, who are typically your high-SLG guys. I'd guess that nearly every pitcher in the league sees a jump in ISO @ 15 pitches.

Agree (sort of)
Generally, the first 2-3 hitters are some of the best in the lineup -- particularly the three.  But you are right in that nearly every pitchers sees a jump in ISO @ 15; I think, however, that coupled with 'loos's groundball tendencies, it makes him a strong bully candidate.
