NEWS FLASH: A'S BIDDING FOR SORIANO!!
Leave it to Billy to shock the world, but Jayson Stark has just reported on ESPN that the A's are now in bidding for Soriano, whether it is in a straight deal or a 3 way combo where Soriano may or may not be coming here, he does not say.
All I can say is that we have a .220 hitting 2Bman and a .230 hitting SS-- put Soriano at 2nd; play whichever between Scutaro, Ellis or Crosby is hitting best at SS;-- and roll the friggin' dice.

From CBS Sportsline
It is unknown whether the A's would keep Soriano or re-package him in another deal. Oakland GM Billy Beane has a history of working three-way deals -- though if the A's are going for it this year, Soriano makes sense because Oakland's offense is borderline anemic and third baseman Eric Chavez has been battling forearm tendinitis and is having a down year offensively.
The eleventh-hour emergence of Oakland in the talks ranks as bombshell news -- and news that could have huge ramifications in the AL West race with the first-place A's leading second-place Los Angeles by only half a game in the standings.
The Athletics rank last in the majors with a .249 team batting average and .393 slugging percentage. Though Soriano almost certainly would be a short-timer in Oakland -- the A's will not be able to afford him on this winter's free-agent market -- under the creative Beane, the A's could either use Soriano to make a strong playoff push or re-direct him elsewhere
I wonder
DJ, Windsor and a catcher for soriano?
That's a lot for two months, but may trump whatever the twins and Angels are offering.
This may be BB's greatest trade deadline coup yet. Or at least he'll drive up the Angels' price.

who cares??
Obviously, i didn't-- so take your Diary Police narc atttitude and shove it.
You don;t think a development as big as this might not deserve its own thread??
maybe the rest of us don't have time
like 40 people saw this and posted in the DLD, of course oaktoon has to make it into a diary. with all caps. and two exclamation marks.
I love it....
(Already discussed in DLD)
you're right
A'S BIDDING FOR MADDUX!!
A'S BIDDING FOR MILLEGE!!
gosh, do you realize how ridiculous you seem??
Not me, not you, not everyone at AN day yesterday who reported that Beane said "ALl's quiet on the trading front", etc..
He is the #1 target in the market right now.
He could single-handedly make our offense good enough to not just win the division, but also conceivably contend in the postseason. And if we don't get him, and the Angels do, the reverse could easily be true.
And you think it doesn't deserve mention with 4 hours to go before the deadline?
NEWS FLASH: we aren't bidding for Maddux or Milledge right now.
saw what coming?
saw what coming?
a trade rumor? at the trading deadline?
i'm bored with mocking you, i'll save it for 1:01pm when soriano is still not on the a's.

As for DJ, I don't see why the Nats would want him. They have Nick Johnson locked up to a reasonable contract and play in a non-DH league.
It deserves its own thread...
This is an ongoing story that may have new developments, and shouldn't be buried in what is, in essence, just a commentary on the morning papers.
I'm not saying it doesn't deserve its

what big development?
did we get soriano?
oh, please.
no big news here, no real news at all
how long have you been following beane at the a's that you don't realize this?
if soriano is in an a's uniform by 1pm today, i'll never criticize another oaktoon diary again.

If we got him (doubtful, but who knows?), I think he would stay in the outfield with Swish moving to first full-time and putting Payton on the bench.

As for a couple of others who have poked their heads into this, I now know why I overreacted to Oaktownpower, since they are simple beyond the pale with hate and superciliousness.
Right. It's all our fault.
It's ours, for not wanting to have to check two diaries for posts about one (at this point non) story.
God....
I think this entire issue is pretty revealing.
There is nothing sacrosanct about the link dump. If someone has already started a diary about Subject A-- and it is obvious in the title-- then someone posting a new diary on the very same subject does have the responsibility to check and see and try no0t to duplicate efforts.
But when a discussion over a subject-- and particularly one as germane and potentially vital as this one-- is buried in another place, with no evidence that it exists, how can you blame someone for starting a new thread-- particularly if that person just read the information and could safely presume no one at AN knew about it yet??
I mean for anyone to say, in effect, "since you weren't playing ball with us on our field, you had better not start your own game" is a foolish point of view. And the fact that you piled on is hardly a surprise.
Friendly human being?
I understand that your ass stings from all the kickings you've taken over the last week plus, but here's the reality of the situation:
You were informed that your diary was recreating efforts already taken elsewhere, and instead of saying something that a nice human being might say, like, "oh, sorry about that. I can delete this one or we can shift the discussion here - whatever works for you guys," you blew chunks out of the guy that pointed it out.
YOU resorted to name calling.
YOU did the wrong thing.
YOU can't take the heat, yet you insist on setting up camp in the kitchen.
So if you only ever take on piece of advice from me, sparky, take this one: Think before you kick.
Oaktoon often reminds me of...
Honestly
How was my comment obnoxious

There's a 'possibility' we could acquire A-Rod.
Or maybe two!
Did Jayson Stark
Of course not.
The truer comment is "oaktoon made a post... better jump on him".
Listen, I made a vow a while back not to reprot anyone as a CGV, for various reasons.
You're testing that vow, my friend. You simply have a vendetta of some sort against me, and I think you had better figure out why you are compelled to do this all the time. What have I ever done to offend you?
Until that time, you , I and this entire site would benefit if you would try to offer something constructive about the team or the sport and not simply look for a way to attack me.
Because in the end you'er getting nowhere and I think it will frustrate you immensely when you realize that.
Very far from frustrated...
Okay, let's see what I can come up with on that front:
"The season is over." (copyright Oaktoon, 2006)
"BLOW. UP. THIS. TEAM." (copyright Oaktoon, 2006)
...
...
...
Why don't you save me the trouble of digging up more and just fill in the blanks yourself, tiger?
wow...
OK-- so here's another vow-- from me to you, as a certain quartet once sang.
I will never again respond to another snide, mean, petty or gratuitous post that you make against me. Ever.
Fire away-- you'll never get a response back to me, because frankly, you don't deserve it.
Now if you want to talk baseball, or the A's, or something substantive, we'll see.
Digging my grave?
Though I do find it enjoyable that you think the harshest punishment a guy could receive is to not get responses from you.
I'll try to survive. Bwaha.
That's because you're
Hmm...I'm rejecting
Watch it, buddy.
In high school,

I hope the lines
Now, that was kind of funny....
I mean here I am with all my criticisms of Beane lately and a lot of frustration over an underperforming team, and the minute I saw this, I wanted to let everyone konw that second. I had no idea it was being covered deep in the DLD-- how could i unless I had spent a fair amount of time going there this am? some do, but to be honest, i usually don't.
People act like they have control over this space sometimes with things like the DLD-- let a hundred Sorianos bloom, for cryin out loud!
I will stick my two cents in.
I would love to see us keep Soriano not do a 3 way trade. He's just what we need! And at a position that hasn't produced offensively for us.
I'll bite.
- Discussion is already taking place there. If it takes place here too, then people have to check two diaries for responses, and there's much wasting of time repeating what's been already said.
- Posting an additional diary means someone else's diary is knocked off the front page, and basically into obvlivion.
- Diaries that barely beat the minimum word count, IMO, suck.
And in terms of the DLD, it's really not hard to check it, do a 'find' for 'soriano', and be taken right to the place it's mentioned. I mean, about 80% of the posts in that DLD concern this topic.
i'm pretty sure 75% of the people who post on AN
Really?
Just press alt and F4 at the same time for the first easy lesson.

Been a big fan of Nick Johnson from day 1 talking trades. He is an injury risk, but he could also DH next year if the Big Hurt leaves.
Beane should try and move Witasick or some BP guy.

Hes making only 5.5 million through '09. Thats a pretty sweet contract for any team if you can get the production. .969 OPS this year.
Hes been pretty healthy this year so far.

I'm guessing BB is after the Marlins
From Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus before BB was announced:
"The idea that Florida would acquire Alfonso Soriano makes sense, both at its most basic level, and in a more complex scenario. The more involved issue is the potential shadow of the new CBA, with teams worried that a de facto salary floor might be put in place. Teams that have bottomed out the payroll would rather not make Royal-style veteran mediocrity signings, and are looking to see if there are fits or long-term signings that would make the bottom line more favorable looking to the teams writing revenue sharing checks. There's also a lot of speculation that dealing a passel of young pitchers for Soriano would be just one side of the transaction. All three teams in the AL Central race made calls to Florida to check on the situation, as did the Angels."
Knowing how BB loves pitching prospects it would be like him to cut himself in for a few of the Marlins
Nats; DJ, Windsor & ?
Marlins: Soriano
A's: Pitching prospects
