Yankees Acquire Abreu + Lidle

No word yet on which players are going from New York to Philadelphia in return.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2534459

Not sure if this impacts the market for Zito or Soriano in anyway, a lot depends on the type of package that Philly receives.

(Filling space) From today's SF Chron:

Beane nearly provided Zito with a shock to the system after the game, motioning to him that he needed to speak with him privately, then telling him what a great job he'd done rather than the GM's first inclination: He'd planned to joke that Zito was being traded.

"I think Billy was going to yank my chain, but then he decided not to,'' Zito said with a grin. "I don't think I would have taken him seriously, anyway.''

Zito said he believes Beane would keep him informed if he was going someplace else, and Beane said both before the game and afterward that he doesn't think the A's will make a major deal.

"We have nothing going on, there's nothing there and we're not trying to drum up business, anyway,'' he said.

Beane has said similar things in previous years and each time has gone on to make some midseason move. And, while the A's also need Zito, especially with Rich Harden out indefinitely, the free-agent-to-be is highly coveted by some prospect-rich teams. He's considered the top left-hander available, and the Mets and the Yankees, two of the most high-profile clubs seeking starters, had scouts at the game.

Update
The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees have a tentative deal to send Phillies right fiedler Bobby Abreu and pitcher Cory Lidle to New York ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reported Sunday.

Stark reported the Yankees will send 18-year-old minor-league shrotstop C.J. Henry -- their No. 1 pick in 2005 -- and 27-year-old left-handed reliever Matt Smith. The Phillies will also pick one other minor-leauge player from an agreed-upon list, while the Yankees will take on responsibility for Abreu and Lidle's contracts. Abreu alone is due close to $37 million over the next 2½ years.

Philly doesn't get much in return, but NYY takes on all the money. Interesting.

so billy isn't even attempting to get
another bat?

Beane said he didn't think they
would do anything major.

It's also possible that the A's will add someone in August, dealing with the waiver wire. Most likely some  better options will get shaken loose as some teams stop thinking they're contenders.

Why? Cuz he didnt get Abreu?
They had 0.00% chance to get Abreu....WAY more than we could ever afford.

This trade could help the A's, we are done with
the Yankees, but the Angels still have 7 games with them

Good point
Anything that can help beat the Angels is good with me.  Although I would not be a fan of seeing that lineup in October.  Damon, Jeter, A-Rod, Abreu, Giambi, Sheffield, Matsui, Posada and Cano.  That could be a tough one to navigate.

Not quite a done deal
Abreu wants his 2008 option to get picked up in exchange for waiving his no-trade clause, and the Yanks/Phils are trying to talk him out of it.  But what's another $15 or $17M to the Yankees?

by bigthree17 on Jul 30, 2006 11:31 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If Abreu waives his no trade clause
The Yankees got a helluva deal. Not only do  they pick up an outfielder in Abreu that gives them more speed, pop and defence, but they also get Lidle, who won't be a top of the line starter but will sure give them better starting options than Ponson and Chacon. Also they gave up 3 prospects who should thrive in Philly but would neVer have gotten to see the light of day in New York. This deal is a perfect example of why I hate the yankees

The Yankees always get what they need to ...
help them out. I will be disappointed this year if Beane doesn't make a deal. We really need some help!

just announced as official
on A's broadcast, Abreu and Lidle to Yankees

This increases the chance that
Gary Sheffield comes to Oakland next year.  The Yanks won't exercise his option, Sheff will want an AL team where he can DH, he'll want a team that will be expected to contend.

Try cheering for THAT.

re
He'll probably want $10 million too.  I fear he's headed to the Angels.  I'd rather the Yankees keep him (I think.)

guys with personal issues are undervalued
but players who will demand a ton of money, have attitude problems, are clubhouse cancers, and have admitted to taking steroids?

let's hope that's not the new demographic beane will be after.

I agree. He's less risky than Frank although
of course much more unpleasant.  Also he can sort of play RF and probably 1B.  His wrist injury is worrisome too.

Can't we just keep Big Frank? :-(
Sheffield hurts my spirit. I have a terrible feeling that you're right, other than the paycheck he certainly fits the A's DH mold.
"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."

Lidle as a Yankee?
I feel slightly ill.

Randomly placed trade idea
SP Zito and 2B Ellis to Yankees

2B Cano and young & semi-effective reliever (from Oakland) to Brewers

2B Weeks, SP Davis, and prospect from Yankees to to Athletics.

Cashman
Pulled a helluva deal. 95 percent none of those players amount to anything.
