Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Let's make a deal

According to Yahoo Sports, the Orioles are shopping Miguel Tejada:

Despite what they're saying publicly, the Baltimore Orioles are indeed listening to offers for shortstop Miguel Tejada, according to the Baltimore Sun. The Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers are among the teams that have shown the most interest, but the Angels remain the frontrunner due to their wealth of prospects. The price tag for Tejada remains unchanged: a quality big-league pitcher and two above-average players or prospects.

Now, here's what I propose:

Zito and Kendall (and/or Crosby) to Baltimore for Ramon and Miggy back.  Now, I'll admit that the nostalgic part of me wants to replay some of the glory days when we actually made it to a postseason, but I think this trade has a lot of merit.  Let's look at reasons for us to make the trade and then reasons for the Orioles to make the trade.

Reasons we should make the trade:

  1.  We get a WHOLE LOT of offense by upgrading our SS and Catcher positions.  Crosby certainly hasn't been producing very much this year.  And Kendall has only hit the ball out of the park once in his tenure with us.
  2.  Our defense certainly doesn't go own at all -- Miggy and Ramon are some of the best players at their positions.
  3.  Zito is probably gone after this year anyway.  Let the Orioles deal with Boras.
  4.  We can afford this deal.  Kendall's huge contract sort of "cancels out" the huge amounts of money the O's are paying Tejada and Ramon.  In fact, our payroll would actually go own by about $3,000,000.
  5.  We keep the Angels and Ranges from getting their hands on Miggy.
Reasons the Orioles would want to make this trade:
  1.  They badly need starting pitching.  They've got enough cash to probably re-sign Zito after this year.
  2.  A one year rental of Zito is a lot more affordable than most of what's out there.
  3.  There's just not a lot else available in the starting pitching market.

sorry
Why would the O's possibly do this?  They have no need for an overpaid barely hitting catcher when they have ramon at a better price, and zito would be a two month rental.  They know they're not in it now and there's no way angelos opens up his pockets, even if he did they know zito isnt gonna want to pitch there.

of course, you are right
Baltimore is not that crazy, who would want Kendall or Crosby, not to mention Zito with Boras as an agent.  Silly speculation

This doesn't make sense
Tejada and Hernandez are each at below market contracts.

I can see a Zito & calero package for Milledge, Heilman and Maine.

The Dodgers are still pretty active and maybe the A's can snag Billingley.

I can also see a Zito and Kotsay for McCarthy and Fields/Sweeney/Anderson type deal.

An interesting one would be Zito for Danks, Diamond and Cruz(atone for the Ginter debacle)

This is why many people hate trade diaries
Some are so freaking ridiculous.

The Angels are offering AAA SS Eric Aybar and SP Ervin Santana for Miggy. Baltimore wants Kendrick instead of Aybar (not sure what that means about Brian Roberts or Melvin Mora) and Scott Shields.

And you think this proposal has merit!

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

Agreed
And with regards to Roberts, they've been shopping him around for a bit of time now. I remember the A's have come up as potential Roberts buyers a few times, so it's not too surprising to me they'd want Kendrick. Being able to hit practically .400 in AAA probably has something to do with it also, though.

You're the 2nd person to mention
that the Orioles are shopping Roberts, but I still haven't read a single thing saying that. Where are you getting your info?

its an "unfounded rumor"
there was a diary about Roberts because of a blurb on mlbtraderumors.com
Unfounded rumors: Billy Beane may be shopping Mark Ellis and Jason Windsor, with possible interest in Brian Roberts...the Angels could be after David Dellucci...teams are calling the Mets about Alay Soler...Dallas McPherson is definitely on the block...there's a decent chance Jon Lieber ends up a Yankee...the Mets and Nats are still talking about Livan Hernandez.

why does everyone want miggy back?
I know as fans we're inclined to remember the power hitting, the clutch play, everything he meant to oakland - but Schott burned those bridges when he said he wouldn't even try to sign Miggy.  Besides, everyone keeps bitching about how Billy chose Eric over Miggy.  Think about it:
  1. We had Bobby Crosby to play SS.  Who did we have at 3rd?  Mark Teahen?  (don't remember if we'd traded him by then, but I think we had).
  2. Look at the size of Miguel's head, neck and biceps. When he came up in 97, he was a skinny little kid from DR that couldn't really hit or field, and now he's one of the best power hitters in the game?  I think the latest market inefficency that Billy has taken advantage of is to (mostly, if not completely) rid our team of 'roiders - hence why Hudson and Mulder were traded, too.  Most fans are in denial about this, but when shit really starts to hit the fan, whether with HGH probes or whatever (if Bud hasn't swept it under the carpet), you're going to hear a LOT of ex a's listed.
