The problem with trade ideas

First, we don't know if the A's are buyers are sellers. In fact I'm not even sure the A's know if they're buyers or sellers.

They have one legitimate sell chip in Zito and another reasonable one in Payton, but that's it. NOBODY wants Kendall. NOBODY wants DJ. NOBODY wants Kotsay. There are a lot of guys on this team who probably actually have negative trade value, so assuming we can not only get rid of them, but get rid of them for something of meaning is a pipe dream. That being said, if they choose to sell, Zito would figure to bring in a sweet haul (the Milledge/McCarthy/etc. names abound) and Payton could find himself on a team like the Yankees in return for some decent, cheap, controllable youngsters like perhaps Darrell Rasner, Colter Bean, TJ Beam, or Bronson Sardinha. Not top flight prospects, mind you, but guys definitely worth having.

Buying would be a bit difficult. The A's real prospectish chips would probably include Windsor, Casilla, Komine, Melillo, and some of the lower minor league guys. The problem ultimately with this is that the market offers little in the way of B level talent. There are the superstars out there, DTrain, Abreu, Soriano, Carlos Lee, etc. but not many guys, hitters especially, that the A's could probably get to help them. I think Julio Lugo would be attainable, but that would effectively mean giving up on Crosby, and I highly doubt Beane and co. are ready to do that, nor am I especially positive they'd be wrong in not wanting to do that anyway. Getting a guy like Wilson Betemit would perhaps help, and I think we have what it takes to get him. I think we have what it takes to get Ryan Shealy, with the Rockies considering Rodrigo Lopez and Jeremy Affeldt deals according to MLB.com (and while in a previous post I stated I wasn't a big Shealy fan, if Rodrigo Lopez is the price to pay I'd  be heartily dissapointed if we didn't bother to top it.) Sean Casey or Craig Wilson would offer some help, though not necessarily a ton, and Pittsburgh has had some weird asking prices in the past. There's also Eric Hinske, whom someone made a diary about a few days back. I personally think he'd be the best option, filling in at third (though sloppily) to give Chavez a spell and being able to shift around at 1B/DH. I think it'd perhaps be even possible to get him without having to dangle Windsor either. Anyway my point is that none of these options would be likely to have a huge impact unless we managed to acquire 2 or 3 of them, and I wouldn't think twice about that kind of activity playing out in Oakland on this deadline.

So, ultimately, my point is that a lot of the trade ideas, while certainly fun, don't seem to take into account the actual trade deadline market. I'd love to see some creative ideas floated out there, and to be honest I'd be lying if I said I didn't see a number of them I did in fact like, but the majority seem to be, for lack of a better word, a little clueless, and admittedly there's really nothing I could come up with myself that'd be any better. And really that's ultimately the problem. It's going to be a dull deadline this year, there just isn't the market fluidity we're used to out there. Too many teams that think they're in it and too many teams shopping big names with huge price tags that few teams can meet.

Yes- Good Post
Very well said walk off. Trade speculation is fun but sometimes these posts are totally unrealistic. Your thoughts are right on. I expect nothing other than DJ coming back up and maybe, if we are luckily the "Hawaiian Punchout" making the splash that Windsor could not deliver. But with Billy there is always that chance he surprises us all and rips off an unsuspecting GM !

One thing...
that no one mentions that bugs me to no end is that Kendall and Kotsay have NO TRADE CLAUSES.  Everyone whines about trading them, but in reality we can't move Kendall for the length of his contract, and we cant even think about moving Kotsay until 2007 when his no trade clause expires.  People might make the arguement that they could waive thier clause, but lets be realistic:  They would only want to go to a winning team with a playoff history and there is no way New York Mets, Yankies or Boston would want to, or have the prospects to trade for them.  Also if Beane turns around and trade Kotsay one year after Kotsay gave us a nice big discount (The Yankies and the Cubs wanted him, on the open market he would have gone for 10 million, not the 7 we got him for), Beane would loose the trust from the players and would never be able to get a discount on a contract again.

Well tell that to Bronson Arroyo, You think now
someone will not take less to play with the Red Sox.

Nope...
They will get overpayed to play with the Boston Red Sox.  Unfortunatly the A's can't afford market value for good players for discounts and Beane DOES NOT GIVE full no trade clauses (Kotsay's only lasted for the first two years of his contract and Kendall signed his in Pittsburgh), so Beane needs the players to trust him to do the right thing and not trade them shortly after they sign a cheap long term contract.

Also, I dont think you'll see a lot of starting pitchers sign deals like the Arroyo deal with the Red Sox anymore.  Heck, you're seeing just above average pitchers with 4.77 ERA's (Becket), getting overpayed at 10 million a year, to play with the Red Sox now.

Yes, good post
The reality is we value our players more than other teams value them.

by china bob on Jul 27, 2006 9:25 AM PDT   0 recs

Not always
Many times the team's streaky players -- the ones who just happen to be going through prolonged slumps -- are not valued at all by the some fans.

Good post
Although I think you could add the following to sell chips:

Dan Johnson
Jay Witasick and/or other bullpen arms (they seem to be fetching a lot right now)

"The first night, we were right there," Bradley said. "All we needed was a couple of touchdowns, and we would have had them."

It seems most likely the A's are gonna stand pat
I agree with what you said above, unless Billy's willing to cash in Zito I don't expect any big moves.

Although, I have read in a couple of different places that we're sniffing around the Brewers for Carlos Lee.  This kinda caught me off guard, probably not too much truth in this.  But just for fun I was wondering what people think it would take to get Carlos?

by DiegoAsFan on Jul 27, 2006 1:02 PM PDT   0 recs

It's hard to tell what the Brewers are actually
asking for, but I'd say at least Windsor, Javier Herrera, and one of the low minor guys (Braden, Lansford, Ray, Deal, etc.) It's possible not even that would get it done.

Maybe a three-way?
I can't imagine Billy managing to bring Carlos Lee to Oakland, but I could see him sticking his nose in someone else's deal and using a reliever to nab a prospect or less expensive hitter.

by DiegoAsFan on Jul 27, 2006 1:34 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah I hadn't really thought of that
But Billy definitely has the track record to warrant  that kind of speculation. It wouldn't surprise me if the only deal we get involved in this deadline would be a deal like that.
