The Third Shift on AN
I have become very attached to this community, even if in physical terms this can be looked at as being very attached to my personal computer, staring blankly into the screen for hours on end. No, this may not be what most would refer to as a healthy love affair. But for what it's worth, I'm hooked, as I can tell that many of you are hooked as well. But before I get around to the title of this post, let me tell you about my particular brand of hooked.
As you may have heard me mention before, I'm a produce clerk at the local supermarket. Lately, I usually work the 2-11pm shift. I walk out to the parking lot, drive the 10 minutes home, get into the house, say hi to Mrs. Sierra ... and then am immediately drawn to the computer. "Lovey!" Mrs. S says threateningly. "Have you washed your hands yet?" I argue that I can't get up to wash my hands because one of our cats is sitting comfortably on my lap, good little buddy that he is, giving me an excuse for my 11:30 pm sneak-peak at AN.
Alas, he gets up, and I am prodded into changing clothes, taking a shower, chatting with Mrs. S for a bit ... until, around 1 or 1:30 a.m., she goes to sleep. Freed from the burden of normal human interactions, I pause only to grab a snack before returning to this, this yellow-and-green-and-white page design with its important red numbers telling me what I haven't read yet.
And now, getting back to my title tonight. The Third Shift is the name of one of a number of syndicated sports-talk radio shows that I may hear as I drive home from work, if I forget to change my dial to FM. (I really don't like any of the syndicated radio on KNBR late-nights, neither on ESPN nor Fox.) But while the show is unremarkable, the title of The Third Shift appeals to me because it sounds like my "shift" at AN. They sometimes call my shift at work a "swing shift" since I bridge the gap from day shift to graveyard. But in my own daily routine, I could say that my home life conducted in the morning is my first shift, my eight hours at work is my second shift, and my late-night prowling at AN is my third shift. Or something.
Anyway, it makes for a peculiar type of interaction here on AN. The most frenzied interaction appears to take place weekdays, during normal working hours; I assume between office-workers disinterested in the work they're actually paid to do. But when I arrive, it's too late for fast-paced conversation. I most-often survey the AN landscape when everybody's asleep, and leave some messages for people to read in the morning. Sometimes, after having spent a a half-hour reading through a loooong thread of comments, I'll write it up in a sort of book-report format. Twenty-three hours later (or sooner, or later), I'll check in to see if anyone responded.
Anyway, given that this is my routine, such as it is, I was thinking about making it into a regular 3 AM diary. The Third Shift, I might call it ... or maybe something different. The 3 AM link dump? The Witching Hour? The Night Watchman's Report? Your suggestions are welcome.
