Our Petco Experience...
We attended all three games at Petco this week while were on vacation in San Diego. It was our first time there and it is truly a beautiful and convenient park. The seats all seemed to have great sightlines and the common/concession areas were very convenient and spacious. We stayed downtown and were able to walk to every game as well as go to restaurants and bars in the vicinity of the stadium which was very cool. It was especially cool to have a drink at the Marriott Bar overlooking the park before the game and see the A's taking batting practice way, way down below.
That said, I was so happy to be back at the Coliseum last night and today (and not simply because it's always nicer to be at your home team's park). The Petco experience was just so...frenetic! The music was loud and the graphics were garish. There were loud, long intro songs for every.single.player at every.single.at.bat. Furthermore, every single event had its own music theme and graphic (every strikeout, every walk, etc., etc.). The Friar mascot was everywhere on the field and on the jumbotron at all times! The "Pad Squad" was always running around between innings riling people up and giving things away. It was overwhelming! I know this is the trend (and it is fun to some degree) and is seen as necessary by many to increase participation (and thus profits) but I truly hope that when the A's get their new stadium that they will keep their more laid-back attitude (and keep the focus on the game as opposed to the spectacle).
I am wondering about others' experiences at other ballparks and if perhaps this the new norm and something that I am simply not used to. I have to admit that I have been to very few other "modern" stadiums (just AT&T and Comerica) so perhaps I am behind the times and that this is something I will have to get used to in the future.
As a perhaps unrelated post script...I read recently about somebody posting about how laid-back the Padres fans are and I have to admit that our experiences there these past few days were the opposite of that! I realize that the sample size was small (just three games) but it did make a big impression on us. At all three games we encountered obnoxious fans (perhaps since they felt threatened that their stadium was filled with a good 1/3 A's fans??) For example, at Wednesday's game, two Padres fans actually got mad at us for cheering for the A's. The people in front of us (who had recently moved there to escape the heat so those weren't their actual seats) said "Can you believe that we have to sit here and deal with this?? (sidelong glances at us for simply standing and clapping for Payton's two-run homer). We shouldn't have to deal with this crap here!!"
That said, I loved Petco Park itself but thought that they didn't need to do so much promotion to allow people to simply enjoy the game of baseball!
P.S. While we were there we did a lot of walking around downtown at all times of day just because we were there. On Wednesday in the late afternoon I looked up at someone walking next to us who was talking loudly on a cellphone. It was Huston Street! He was heavily engrossed in his conversation or else I might have at least said hello (so much so that he almost wandered in front of a taxicab while crossing the street!). Later we crossed paths with Bobby Crosby as he crossed the street to enter the stadium. Very cool experiences because of having a downtown stadium.

I went to the 14 inning game
I have to completely agree about the employees!
Oops...meant Thursday's game, not Wednesday's game
Petco was Fantastic
We arrived early & were able to get some autographs.
Rich Harden is a real outstanding person. He was extremely patient in allowing fans to take pictures, & the countless times people were asking about his injury. Huston Street is another class player. He is a willing signer & a likable player.
Petco has to be considered one of the elite baseball stadiums. If only the A's could get something like this.
The next time we come down, we plan on staying at the Omni Hotel. You can't beat walking to the stadium. The downtown area is being completely renovated & is a real gem.
Our Petco experience was a 9 on a 10 scale. The only gripe I have about Petco is the bankroll you need to bring to buy food & drinks.
We saw a great game & had a great time.

I went to all 3 games
My Experience....
Any stadium
Oh, perhaps I wasn't that clear...
I suppose I just need to get used to the trend of all the other "stuff" that goes on at the newer parks. It must work to bring in the more casual baseball fan otherwise they wouldn't do it.
Petco and other parks
As for the Petco employees, top notch. Our beer vendor was enormously friendly. After the game, we went to a local bar, where lo and behold, we found the beer vendor. He was nice enough to give directions over the phone to a friend from LA who was meeting us that night.
This past California trip, I also visited Angel Stadium for two KC games. We were wearing our KC blue in a sea of red and nobody said anything to us past the suggestion that we were sitting on the wrong side of the park, as we were behind the Angel dugout.
I've gone to my own team's stadium and cheered for Oakland when they played the White Sox and there was no problem. We had seats behind the Oakland dugout and were quite loud during the game, with my friend screaming, "Let's go Nick Swisher," rather loudly whenever he batted. Past the curious looks from the players, nobody thought anything of us.
Now this all could be because we're two females in our mid-twenties, but I've never had any problems.

never been to petco
It is a little annoying, but I figure there's probably some research showing that the casual fan really prefers that, and the hardcore fan will come no matter what.
Well said...

I noticed that in SF
I'm going to Petco in September, and I can't wait!
The Word: Or bitter sports journalists.
They have discovered a link
every event theme song
I mustve been driving my wife nuts saying how stupid the songs are for every event. Who wants to hear 'walk this way' or 'walk like an egyptian' EVERY time someone walks. We get it, we are watching the game!
The best effect Petco does is 'Hells Bells' for Hoffman in the 9th. The place is dead silent for a good 30 seconds before the music blares. Its really a powerfull effect.

I go to games to watch the games
For me the coliseum strikes a decent balance as far as music, mascot, etc. I loved Wrigley Field when I visited it! I couldn't stand Toronto's ballpark - besides the fact that it was indoors and the field looked like a pool table, there was entirely way too much nonsense going on. (I visited there in 1988 so I don't know whether it's improved.)
I haven't been to Petco park yet, but I love the idea of being able to walk to a downtown park.
My Petco experience
A couple complaints though...
a) The food wasn't the most expensive I've seen at a ballpark, but it was close. Not a huge variety either -- the basic burgers, pizza, beer, but no "signature food" ala garlic fries (SF and Oakland) or sushi (Seattle) or cheesteaks (Philly) or anything like that.
b) During the game, there was a lined foul ball that hit a kid in the head in my section (116). It took what seemed like an eternity for anyone to come down, despite everyone signalling for ushers and medical attention. It almost would've been quicker to have Larry Davis come check the kid out, but then the kid would've been listed day-to-day for the rest of the summer. I'm used to the coliseum where there is instantly someone there to check on anyone who catches a ball, and where the medical attention is extremely quick.
c) Minor complaint, but they only have pens in the shape of baseball bats. I collect pens from each of the stadiums I visit, and the ones I've been getting are normal ballpoint pens that easily fit in the pen cup I have here at home. But these are too big. :(
All in all, a great stadium! Now I've got to figure out what ballpark to hit next...
Signature food...

I liked Petco
Seats both Wednesday/Thursday in lower level, so the sightlines were fine. The upper deck looked very steep, but I'd guess the city/water views from up there were great.
We definitely have the best ticket prices here at home, that's the price you pay and pay and pay for a new ballpark, I guess.
It was great to see/hear so many A's fans there.
Someone sitting next to me commented that so many people in San Diego are from elsewhere, that there are always lots of visiting team fans at the ballpark.
