A Day at Fenway

If you read this on the livejournal group, it's the same exact thing. AN swallowed my two previous postings.

So, I went to Fenway Park today. Went at 12 for a 2 o'clock game to get the ticket that I had left for myself at will call. It was baking, 91 at first pitch, and staying at 93. No wind anywhere. I was out past the overhang in right field, so basically, it just plain sucked. I went through about 6 bottles of liquid (I only brought 4...), and I only had 1 Fenway Frank. It's funny, you know the thing's four bucks, and it pisses you off that it's four bucks, but you just have to have one. Just a tad funky, I think. Saw an A's win, had awesome seats, you'll see where later, but yeah. Great game, except for the heat. Felt like I died several times over, or something. It was insane.

Some random Fenway points:

  • 3rd inning: Beachball hits me in face. Beachballs?! I thought they only did that in Anaheim. It was a bit annoying, and kind of disrupting.
  • 6th inning: Wally, the mascot, who isn't as cool as Stomper, came up to me, and shot me (and my scorecard) with a water gun. Didn't do a lot of damage, but it was funny. I just kind of looked at him, looked at the scoreboard, and shrugged. He then went away.
  • 8th inning: Top: Wave came. It sucked. People were actually getting into it too, never mind that it was a 5-1 game at the time. To be fair, Tavarez was taking it really slowly on the mound, and it was really hard to pay attention to the game. It was weird, because the bleachers started chanting "Let's go Red Sox," but then the wave came and the cheer died. Bottom: What's with Sweet Caroline? As far as I can tell, it has nothing to do with either Boston or baseball... I guess this article explains it, though. Kind of funky.

They can never get Swish's name right (nor is the lineup even close):

There he is... and remind me again why they love it?

Is that Steve Swisher or Stee Swisher?

i thought it was bad
when ppl thought i was my mom on the phone. Poor Nick. .thats hilarious.

sigh FEnway i miss that place. . 1998 yep

funny i met Scott Hatteburg when he was a catcher for the Red Sox. I didnt know until I was complaining that i didnt have his autograph to my dad. . I knew the scribble on that Fenway program was important. but enough with the past.

I ralized if I were ever in a fight I want Milton Bradley on my team.

DUDE!
I was in 89 - Row WW! I had my white Harden jersey on! ugh, those fans SUCK let me tell you - I "self-upgraded" in the 7th behind the A's dugout and I was cheering like a champ when this jerk turns and goes "If your team was down 8 runs you wouldn't be cheering so loud" uhh, you are correct sir, however . . . Now, I have some SICK pictures from Saturday - how do I put them on here when my friend sends them?

It was THE stupidest
thing I have ever heard- there was actually another Oakland fan in the row over from me and we were just like -are you serious? then we proceeded to cheer EVERY FRIGGIN good thing that occurred thereafter! Man, I didn't feel one degree of that heat!

I think I saw you.
I was wearing a green A's shirt with the home cap, was in the first row of RFBox89...

NICE!
I had the jersey and white shorts (complete with the developing case of swamp-ass in that heat, soooo cute and way too much info but, it is what it is!) and my hair must have been in the pony tail by then. Were you there Saturday too? We were staying at the boys hotel actually - and I wound up at the same bar as Frank Thomas and Loiza Saturday night! AND I got to talk to Rich on Saturday all-in-all it was the fricking BEST road trip EVER!

<apologizes to players next day>

<ends up in bar with Thomas and Loiaza next night>

We need a song--Neil Diamond need not apply
I get so tired of that tired old tired cheer, ad nauseum--"LET's go OAKland, clapclapclappitycrap.

And who better to start this new tradition than AN--maybe at AN Day?   So--in the vein of Huston's new intro song (Tumblin' Dice?  Boom Boom--Out Go the Lights?), what should it be?

Seems to me it ought to be rousing rather than sentimental, a lyric that everybody knows, and with little enough range that most everybody can sing all the notes.  Maybe with a Bay Area link--writer/performer/subject.  Maybe something Creedence/Fogerty?  (But prolly not Centerfield--not after Kotsay's weekend--although a rousing chorus of Put me in Coach--I'm ready to play! has its appeal).  Green Day?  Duritz and Co.?

Ideas?

I say we do a long drawn out chant
That is utterly incoherent, English soccer style. With absolutely dull lyrics, like FIGHT ON, FIGHT ON, OAKLAND ATHLETICS, FIGHT ON FOR THE GREEN AND GOO00000LD, THE WHITE ELEPHANT CLUB FOREVER ON AND OOOOOOOOOOOON, WE LOVE YOUUUUUU THROUGH AND THROUGH, YOU OAKLAND AAAAAAAAAAAAATHLETICS

Thanks for sharing these!!
As much as I dislike the Red Sox and even more so their fans, Fenway is one place I am really looking forward to going to. I am hoping that next year will be in the cards. Thanks for giving me a little preview.

the red seat
Great photos. You weren't too far away from the red seat in the outfield that marks the spot of a long Ted William's home run.  I was in Fenway in 1998 to watch the A's  We had Giambi at 1st base and the Sox had Dennis Eckersley pitch in that game. In fact, I ran into Bill King at a downtown museum during my stay.

Did you take one of those guided tours of the park before the game?  You can visit the dugout, press box, luxury suites and walk around the staduim on the warning track.

Great Stuff
I have been to Fenway twice. The 1st time I walked up and got a seat behind a post. I discussed it with an entrepreneurial usher who willingly accepted my bribe. Voila great seat behidn the !b dugout. The 2nd time was in '89 and the A's were playing the Sox. The Sox fans were amazing. Clemens was pitching and he had bad mouthed Boston in a recent local magazine article. The fans were merciless and personal. They also crucified Rich Gedman.

The A's theme music has to be Tower of Power's "What is Hip" (This was Mike Noriss' intro tune.) For extra credit name TOP's bass player!
