Holy Crap!!! Look what I just found in my baseball card collection!!!

OK, I've got to move to a new house soon, and I was doing some packing. Thank god I kept my baseball card collection through 5 moves in 7 years. Because I just found...

... this in my collection. I was sure that I'd lost it years ago, as I hadn't randomly run across it in quite a while, but here it is, going into the baseball card box that it belongs in.

Wow! Rock over London! Rock over Chicago! Kodak, see what develops!

(Note: This is Frank Thomas' Topps rookie card, without the name on the front. I pulled it out of a pack a long time ago.)

The no name card
is still worth something I think..unlike almost every card from the early 90's

wow dude that kicks ass
whatever you do, dont sell it now. After Thomas has been in the hall of fame for 5 or 10 years, that card could put your kids through college. Depending on the overall market for Baseball cards.

sell the NO NAME CARD
now before baseball cards really bottom out...unless they have already!  Baseball cards, gotta love 'em.

That thing's worth a TON!
Either sell it now, or hold on to it till a milestone approaches (Sell right before the milestone) like 500 or 600 Homeruns (whichever he is approaching, I can't remember which) or when he gets inducted into the Hall of Fame.

That was my thinking too...
Wait until he gets HOF.  THEN it's gonna be worth some serious cash. :)

Sorry to rain on your parade, but the card's worth
$300-$375.  Certainly it's cool to find something worth that much money, but not anything to bank your retirement on.  Nice Find!!!!!!!!!!

The article is a bit outdated but:

http://www.redding.com/redd/sp_columnists/article/0,2232,REDD_17571_3806694,00.html

Like everyone else, I thought it was worth alot more as well!

Go A's, Go Big Hurt, or in your case Go ____

Yeah, at times in the past
it's been worth from $1000-$2000, but baseball cards are all wierd these days, like $3.00 a pack for 8 cards, and, oooooooh, you're guaranteed to get some wierd ass card with one square inch of a Derek Jeter game jersey. Hoo-freaking-rah.

by hunter on Jul 15, 2006 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What you might want to do
is two things.

#1: Send the card into PSA to get graded.

#2: Hold on to the card in a safe place. Wait for Baseball cards to go back to how they were before. IE: For the collecters. The reason the 'market' crashed is because they tried to milk too much money from it and producing way too many.

The market will continue this trend till the collecters get it back. Then, whaddyaknow, the market will swell again and it will be worth something.

At the very least, like I said before, wait for a milestone.

Oh yeah!
This is also a great oppertunity to get it signed by Frank Thomas himself!

Noooooo!
That will kill the value

NO!
Don't get it signed personally

by onestepahead on Jul 15, 2006 4:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

have him sign the CASE after it's graded.
does that work?

by Jjjsixsix on Jul 15, 2006 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

no no no no no!!!!!
Don't have him sign the card or the case! If you really want, you can do a combo thing where you get him to sign something else and then frame that and the card together, but for goodness sakes, don't have him sign the card!!!

Check at a local card shop to find out more about what's happening with error prices and resell rates these days, as well as what's going on with Frank Thomas cards. There are many people out there who like error cards, so you could also check eBay for the going rate.

Hey now...
Are you quoting the ANtics? I thought I was the only one obsessed enough to do that!

And... I have the same Thomas card - with the name - so apparently, my copy is only worth $2.

This is just my opinion
But I doubt the card will experience much volatility, one way or the other, in the future. I think the card market has more or less topped out on past cards. Barry Bonds' Topps rookie card is still gonna be worth the fifteen bucks it's worth now 50 years from now, unfortunately. The flip side to that is that I also don't think it'll be any less than fifteen bucks. So if you're interested in a couple hundred bucks or whatever it'll fetch on EBay, go for it. But don't expect to have a gold mine on your hand even fifty years down the road.

Congradulations on being the only
person to reply to that reference. I don't know why, but something made me go on the hunt for some Wesley Willis, and I found this site with a bunch on mp3s from one of the record labels that published cds by him.

Burger King on Milwaukee Ave. - Willis
They've got a great Wesley drawing hanging there of the Burger King - I wanted to try and guy it from 'em. Rock on Chicago!

I met him several times
I actually met him a long time ago, when I was working at a print shop in Eugene, Oregon. He came in and I was working the counter. At the time I had no idea who he was. Suffice to say, having Wesley Willis standing in front of me, in all his gigantic, crazy glory was interesting.

I've got a few McGwire Topps rookie cards . . . probably not worth much after the congressional hearing, eh?

If I am correct,
didn't the card makers (the ones that are left) and MLB, MLBPA, make a liscensing agreement recently that should restore some of the card markets credibility?  I think there are only two companies left that can print cards and that the amount that they can print are now controlled. Just a thought, but if that is the case then the value of cards could go up in the near future.

curmudgeon corner
<grumble> Back when I was a kid, we actually used cards to trade and memorize statistics and play flipping games... you know, we touched them with our hands and it wasn't some kind of junior stock market daytrader lottery.</grumble>

I remember a younger family friend looked at a box of baseball cards I had from the 70s and wept. He said, if you'd kept these in good condition, this box would be worth more than a thousand dollars.

Sigh.

nice find...
but i got a mcgwire, caneco, and bonds rookie cards. value probably went down with all the steroids nonsense. also i have a jeter and RJ rookies. i used to be all into card trading back in the day with friends afterschool. i remembr trading binders full of cards. i remmeber some idiot tricked and traded me some fake card for a real gregg jeffries rookie i gave him..what a punk. this was back in the late 80's to mid 90's. havent really collected much since but still have box loads of cards. i even went to card shows back then too. i guess it was the cards/comic book collecting phase i was in

by CaliAsFan on Jul 16, 2006 9:28 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

now they have special edition cards out
with pieces of jerseys or bats..that kind of stuff that they cut up an send out limited number of cards

by CaliAsFan on Jul 16, 2006 9:29 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

so whats is the market like now?
are they still mass producing cards, or have the card companies limited themselves more in the past few years, in light of the overproduction during the late 80's/early 90's,my prime card collecting years :(
