Antonio P?rez Fan Club Seeking Members!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls!  The Antonio Pérez Fan Club has just initiated a new membership cycle, and you're invited to join!

There's never been a better time to join than now!!  And in honor of Antonio's recent playing time and Chavez' likely trip to the DL (d'oh!), we've even waived the already low membership fee of $.092!

So join now and become part of a one of a kind club, dedicated to the A's Dominican Dandy, Antonio Pérez.

Not this Antonio Pérez:

Or this Antonio Pérez:

Or even this Antonio Pérez:

Nope, this is the guy I'm talkin about:
   . . . . .   . . . . .
    . . . .     . . . .
     . . .       . . .
      . .         . .
       .           .

I know, I know-- you're thinking something like, "MAIN MAN???/ WHAT? This guy's OPS is only .376.  Not is OBP, his OPS!"

or,

"He's K'd in 5 of his last 10 at-bats and in 31 of 65 at-bats all year!"

or,

"Maybe one of the 3 guys above our Antonio could actually hit better than .092 this year."

But mark this day, my friends.  Saturday, July 15, 2006.  The Ides of July.  Today is the day that Antonio Pérez turns it around.  Right? Right??

Hmm...well maybe not today, but if not today, then tomorrow.  Or the next day.  My point is just that Pérez isn't a bad hitter-- he hit .297 last year and had a .360 OBP!  All he needs to do to get back on track is to have standard playing time, which he's finally gonna get.

To date, he's been Ginterized...and you can't really blame a guy for sucking when there's no real opportunity to get in any type of a rhythym.

And the strikeouts-- I chalk them up to trying to hard to do too much.  Now, with more constant playing time, our boy can chill out at the plate a little bit, and not chase pitches.  I'd be curious to see how many of his strikeouts this year have been swinging versus looking.

With Pérez' inevitable increase in playing time in mind, the APFC is looking for members.  Or at least to try and increase the Pérez-Mojo going around AN.  Hopefully we can inspire him to shines given this opportunity and he can be one of the  plusses for our guys in the second half.  If Pérez can turn it on and spell Chavez so that he actually is healthy for a run up and into the playoffs, then we can still do big things.

Go A's and Go Pérez!  Who's with me?

me too
Look at it this way, when Chavez didn't play in Yankee stadium, the A's swept them, we have won the first two in Boston without Chavez, it has to be Antonio!!!!  Last night he hit two balls hard, both caught so at least he hit the ball harder in two times than Kendall has hit in 250 AB's.
As you say tonight is the night against Schilling.

I've been a member of this one for quite
a while.  I think it's been one of the biggest mistakes of the year not playing Perez instead of Scutaro.  I love Scoot as much as the next guy, but Perez proved last year that he can hit given playing time.

Keep him in there, Macha!

Ditto here.
Perez would start on many teams. He's going to be a second half revelation.

by Ozzz on Jul 16, 2006 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree with his "proof"
Perez's swing is absolutely horrible.  The history of major league baseball is full of guys that hit for one year, and then don't show up again.  He hit well for one year - I'll give him that - but his pitch selection and swing mechanics are as bad as you'll see from a major league hitter.  He tries to pull everything, and cannot handle the off-speed pitch.  The way Crosby is hitting, Perez is a poor man's Crosby.  I cringe every time I see his name in the lineup.

by IndianaAsfan on Jul 16, 2006 6:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree
I was very impressed with his defense last night.  I'd like to see Chavy get a DL stint, retroactive to yesterday, maybe start it today.  Give Chavy almost 3 weeks to rest up(AS break included), and give Perez a chance to wake up the bat.  I think with Chavy healthy(if not dealt ala grover), Perez at 2B is better option than Ellis, if his defense there is anywhere close to average.
Anyone who knows anything about baseball knew that, which is why Macha didn't-TexasAsfan

by gatling on Jul 15, 2006 9:40 AM PDT reply actions

They could actually
make it retroactive all the way back to last Monday, since the last game he played in was on Sunday.  I say do it.  He's not helping the team out there right now, even really on D, since he has to hug the line to make up for his decreased mobility.  I say give him a couple of weeks off and get him as healthy as possible for the home stretch.

by bigthree17 on Jul 15, 2006 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah...
...and as someone else pointed out in another thread, it's not like going on the DL would hurt Chavez; it can only help, since he's not really doing much for us anyways.  We need him healthy, even if it means a bit of time off.

I understand he's a fierce competitor, but he's gotta understand that as a competitor, the thing he can do to help the team most is to likely head to the DL and get truly healthy.

I also have confidence that Pérez' will regress to his personal 'mean'-- at least the law of averages suggests this will be the case.

by Gene Nelsons Mullet on Jul 16, 2006 9:20 AM PDT reply actions

Perez mesmerizes
I think it was his ridiculously awful start that started my fascination with AP.  He just stood in the box each at bat, elbow twitching, looking like nothing bad was happening in his career.  Wherease Dan Johnson looked like an emotional wreck as his hitless streak progressed, AP was totally unaffected.  I found myself mesmerized by him like I haven't been since Dennis Kucinich ran for President.  There's a kind of strange, invincible glow around AP.  And there's something satisfying about watching a player who has nowhere to go but up.  While most of the A's are highly talented players who are badly underperforming, watching AP's batting average climb from .000 is an exercise in positive thinking.  I'd rather watch AP improve than Chavez/Crosby/Kotsay/Ellis/Scutaro decline.  This is a fan club in need of an enormous outfield sign.  Actually, forget it: let's turn Wolf's embarrassing tarp over half the field into a giant "AP Fan Club" sign.

I was just arguing this very point
that Perez should be getting many of the at bats they're giving to Scoot (still love Scoot, just sayin...).

Vindication is mine!
