Open Thread: Game 61 - A's at New York

Hang on to your hats, folks, because you're about to see a lineup without Chavez, or Crosby, or Ellis. A lineup in which Jay Payton, sub-.300 OBP and all, hits in the #3-hole, while Scutaro hits 7th and actually looks like he belongs there. It has come to this.

Welcome to the big league club, Mike Rouse, and by the way we need you to start. And if you have a two-hit game, you'll pass our third-baseman's season total. Gak.

So without further ad-eewww, here they are, ladies and gentlemen, your 2006 World Series contending Oakland Athletics!!!

Kendall
Swisher
Payton
Thomas
Kielty
Bradley
Scutaro (SS)
Perez (3B)
Rouse (2B)

Damon
Jeter
Giambi
Rodriguez
Posada
Cano
Williams
Cairo
Cabrera

At least our DH is not batting .000
The hardest game I ever witnessed was a few weeks ago when I had to explain to Yankee fans in NY why our DH (Perez)was batting .000 (and no this was not his first start).  The Yankee fans gave me quite a time about that.  None of our 6,7,8,and 9 batters had a batting average over .200 at that time.  They were outright laughing.

Someday our team will be healthy--right?

Only Wang kept us out of the game on Friday night.  Otherwise the (depleted)team had to make you proud.

Bottom of the order hitting .406

oooh, that's u-g-l-y
Payton and Kielty had better frikkin' step up tonight, because the cupboard is totally bare in the bottom third of the order.  These two combined are almost automatic outs and it's going to be a long night if they're up to their usual 0-2 swing-miss tricks.

But the two automatic outs I'm so chafed about are batting third and fifth.  I doubt that if you scratch around MLB tonight you'll find anything dreckier in the 3/5 hole than what Macha is throwing out there tonight.

It's okay
so long as Chavez is not able to play because he is hurt and needs this day off and not a case of Macha just deciding I'm going to give him a day off because he could use one and make it against the LHP.

I agree with playing lots of subs at one time, how many times in the last few years have I seen the Giants win on Sunday using a AAAA lineup?

If you are going to do that, might as well do it with RH bats against Randy.  There's a certain "nobody expects us to win" edge that guys sometimes get.

And I also like playing the rookie in his first game up, no time to think about it, just react.

the usual exaggeration and distortion
Gore said something to the effect that he was instrumental in creating the legislation that led to the Internet -- which is basically true, since in the 1980s he chaired some House subcommittee on science projects, and the Defense Department program that developed the ARPA Net was one of the projects Gore actively pushed for as chairman.  Some journalist "summarized" the line to say Gore claimed responsibility for making the Internet possible, and from then on every time it got repeated it got distorted a little more. Eventually, opponents made a joke out of it, saying he claimed to have created the Internet.

I left work early and just came home & crashed... got up for the game... shuffled out to the living room, the Man and the Boy don't seem to be around...  I know where the Man is, so I called the Boy and said "Where are you?"

<pause>

"Are you serious?"

"Yeah, I just got up. Where are you?"

"Mom... our apartment's not that big."  And he walks out of his room.

So I turn on the TV in time to see them announcing our lineup.

I'm pretty sure I died sometime during my nap.

The announcer was talking about how Thomas hits the pitch up and out over the plate very well, just as Johnson left one out there, and Thomas killed it. He kept talking for a few seconds and then stopped abruptly and they watched it fly over the fence. It was like he got shocked by it.

With his legs so wide apart, it seems like he'd have to concentrate too much of his below-the-waist energy on just not falling over... and then he can't stride or even shift his weight much when he swings.
