Draft Open Thread Day 1 - 2
Bumped to front page to continue Draft Day Madness '06 - louismg
We need a new one. We got the first to thread.
A's picks so far:
- Trevor Cahill, RHP, Vista HS, Vista, CA. Could be a signability issue, since he's committed to Dartmouth, and that scholarship is worth a lot of money, plus an education.
- Matt Sulentic, SS-OF, Hillcrest HS, Dallas, TX. He's a hitting monster, with crazy stats, and with a BA approaching 600 an OBP over 700, with 19 jacks.
- Chad Lee, LHP, Barton Co JC, Great Bend, KS. He's from OK. Coming back from an ACL injury just last year. Plus fastball and a good curve. Health questions abound. Stats not all too good this year.
- Jermaine Mitchell, CF, UNC-Greensboro. I refer you to that. The MLB radio guys didn't know about him, and DraftTracker gives no info. Hit 397/493/568/1061. 24/30 on steals, so is fast.
- Andrew Bailey, RHP, Wagner. 2.03 ERA this past year, in 44 1/3 IP. Struck out 53, walked 16. Wagner profile here. Is a junior, had TJ surgery this year.
- Michael Leake, RHP, Fallbrook (CA) HS. I think he finished 10-1, with a bunch of Ks, or something. Info is really scarce on him.
- Angel Sierra, CF, Puerto Rico Baseball Academy. That's an info black hole. I've tried. It doesn't work.
- Danny Hamblin, 1b, U of Arkansas. Hit 289/382/557/939 in the SEC. All below his average. Arkansas profile here.
- Christian Vitters, SS, Fresno State. He's a junior. (profile). 340/431/557/988 in the WAC. stats. Was the WAC player of the year, but also broke a finger.
- Jason Fernandez, RHP, Louisana-Lafayette. 2.86 ERA, 101 Ks/37bbs in 91 1/3 innings. 9 hbps, 9 wild pitches. Was 9-2. (profile)
- Shane Pertussi, RHP, Franklin Pierce Coll. 2.64 ERA, 9-2. 95k, 31bb in 85 1/3 ip.
- Ben Jukich, LHP, Dakota Wesleyan. He's good.
- Toddrick Johnson, CF, Southern Miss. (profile). Lefty, hitting 363/444/552/996 against CUSA. Has 11 jacks.
- Kyle Christensen, RHP, Millikan HS, Long Beach, CA. MaxPreps stats. Not very good a team, had to forfeit several times this year. 1.64 ERA, 75 Ks and 15 bb in 64ip.
- Branden Dewing, LHP, San Jos? State. (profile). 3.14 ERA, 7-5. 114 1/3 IP, 72 K, 31 BB, .251 BAA.
- Michael Affronti, SS, LeMoyne College. (profile). 389/434/662/1096 against the MAAC. (stats).
- Michael Ambort, C, LaMar University. He's a junior. (profile). Played only 6 games this year. Set all kinds of records in 2005.

He's a reliever
Chad Lee - 1st team pitcher
Lee brought scouts to ball park a lot this year with mid 90's fastball. Lee missed most of the last season with a knee injury, but returned to have a great season for the Cougars. Lee started the season in the bullpen, made 3 starts in the middle of the year, then returned to the bullpen to finish the season.
The 6-4 right-hander went 5-2 with 5 saves for the Cougars, posting a 4.52 ERA. He struck out 50 batters in just 41 innings of work for Barton. He did struggle with control at time, walking 21 and hitting 4 batters. But opponents hit just .241 off him and of the 38 hits he surrendered, 29 were singles.

He's got the body and the heat ...
Barton County (Kan.) CC sophomore Chad Lee has emerged as the top junior college prospect not under control to a major league club. Lee, who never has been drafted, is 6-foot-4 righthander with a 90-93 mph fastball and a decent curve. He missed part of 2005 after injuring his left knee and requiring surgery, though he returned to pitch in the MINK League during the summer.
No Samardzija yet
Football's killing him.
Samardzija and La Porta were there

ACl is an issue but BA ranked Lee 3rd best Comm
Our next pick in 158 right?
who's going to listen to most of day 1??
i did last year.
What these first three picks show me...
2nd round:
Trevor Cahill: Got sick, lost 6mph on his fastball, other teams ran away, got healthy, Billy drafts him.
3rd round: Matt Sulentic, filthy numbers but has a small frame and iffy fielding so other teams stand off - Oakland has a DH spot, Billy drafts him.
4th round: Huge CC prospect, blows his knee out, other teams flee, gets healthy and throws deccently, Billy drafts him.
This is Moneyball, folks. Spotting the undervalued commodity and grabbing it. I think what we're seeing here is three guys, two of which might flop, but one of which will be a superstar stud.
And that's a pretty good result from a 2nd, 3rd and 4th round pick.
I follow you, sort of...
Definitely Sulentic.

mitchell info from scout.com
1:15 p.m. With their fifth round pick, the A's select their first four-year college player. Jermaine Mitchell is a centerfielder from UNC-Greensboro who is highly athletic and he has a good build at 6'0'', 200 pounds. Mitchell attended Texarkana College before heading to UNC-Greensboro. He is a left-handed hitter and thrower with some pitching experience, as well, although he projects as an outfielder.
Mitchell led the Greensboro squad in hitting with a .397 batting average in 2006. He stole 24 bases in 30 opportunities and walked 42 times against 43 strikeouts. He also led his team in homeruns (five), triples (seven) and doubles (11). He projects as a top-of-the-order hitter

any info on bailey??
had TJ this year.
a report from January 2006
Staten Island, NY -- Four Wagner College student-athletes were named to the Baseball America preseason All-Northeast (NEC) Conference team while two of those athletes were selected as the top prospects from the conference for the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft held in early June.
Redshirt-junior pitcher Andrew Bailey (Hadden Heights, NJ / Paul VI) headed the Wagner foursome as he was selected as the 34th-best senior in college baseball after being named to Baseball America's "Fab 50" list of seniors. Bailey was also anointed the top pro prospect from the NEC for the second-straight year as well as being named to the preseason All-NEC team as a starting pitcher. Last season Bailey was on his way toward an All-NEC season with a 3-2 record with 47 strikeouts against only 12 walks in 41.2 innings before being sidelined by an injury. Despite being injured, he was selected in the 16th round by the Milwaukee Brewers but elected to return to school after being granted a medical-redshirt. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

about Angel Sierra
http://www.puertorico-herald.org/issues2/2005/vol09n14/PRSportsBeat0914-en.shtml
When John Kruk uttered his now famous phrase: "Lady, we're not athletes, we're baseball players," he hadn't yet met the 2005 graduating class of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy High School. Four of the school's outfielders, all of whom will be heavily scouted for their hitting and fielding talents this month at the 2005 Excellence Tournament, set a new Puerto Rican high school record this past weekend at the island championships, winning the boy's 4x100-meter relay in 42:78.
Not bad for a quartet that never ran track prior to entering the specialized high school in Caguas, Puerto Rico. The team, coached by Alfonso Petters, and made up of seniors Brian Carreras, Juan Parra, Nicolas Figueroa and junior Angel Sierra, were to have earned a free trip to the Penn Relays at the end of the month in Philadelphia, Pa. However, PRBAHS principal Edwin Correa, a former Texas Rangers pitcher, turned down the honor.
"The Excellence Tournament is our World Series," said Correa. "That's where all the scouts will be and that's their chance of getting drafted."

On Ben Jukich:
"A native of Duluth, Minn., finished the season with an overall record of 10-5 with an ERA of 1.90. He started 13 games with nine complete games and three shutouts. Jukich set the school record with 144 strikeouts in 94.2 innings of work, while walking just 15 batters. Batters hit just .214 against Jukich on the season. He also set the single game record by striking out 17 batters in a single game.
nice.
Doesn't seem like a particularly great draft

yeah who cares now who they draft
we need to get a 17th round wonder ala Rich Harden
by redclay22 on Jun 6, 2006 3:28 PM PDT reply actions
what is the story with Harden
Harden was an outfielder
harden
part of the story
While he had always had an interest in pitching, Harden was originally drafted in 1999 out of Victoria's Claremont Secondary in the 38th round by the Seattle Mariners as a centrefielder. It was only through his time at Central Arizona Junior College (he graduated in 2001) and when he signed pro with Oakland in 2001 (after being selected in the 17th round of the 2000 draft) that he really started to focus on pitching.
"I'd say it's definitely a little harder -- just the fact that I didn't grow up [pitching], and all I've ever thrown in my life is, really, fastballs -- without much control -- so I'm definitely learning a ton now; I'm learning a lot from everybody."
Canadian hockey player,
He was also a draft and follow. We drafted him in 2000 but didn't sign him until May 2001 - after a dominant season. If he had reentered the draft, he would have gone much higher.
jackpots
with LaPorta gone, any players still left??
i've been campaigning for a while
Sickles' drafted Toddrick Johnson 8th rd
A's 16th round pick:
You know what this was?
About half of these players had injuries last season that they had to come back from, which backed other scouts away.
The other half of them are from high school or obscure colleges where nobody spends much time scouting.
In a draft class where there are few stars and we didn't have a pick before #66, it's an interesting tactic. Definitely finding value in odd places.
Lars Anderson is this yr's Smoak
Sad to say...

HA!
love your blog
p.s. was it clear to you last year that Baisley and Recker were a cut above the other unheralded picks?
Am really wondering if Baisley will/has elevate to 'prospect' status.
Also it is interesting that the A's have not drafted any catchers this year. Makes me think that Padron/Recker are fine as guys to follow Suzuki and Powell up the ladder.
Aw shucks.
As to Recker and Baisley, Recker is just such a man-beast of a physical specimen, that you kind of figured once he got into the wooden bat groove, he was going to do something worth watching. When he hit them sweetly, they just went. Oakland works his D pretty hard, which is good because he needs it, but if he ever got some serious hitting coaching, oh. My. God.
Baisley is an odd bird in as much as, if you look at him, he doesn't seem overly athletic. He has the mechanics, he hits it sweetly, but you'd really be looking for him to build some power in order for him to be more than a AAAA guy, I think.
But Justin Sellers, Jason Ray, Bradley Davis, Jimmy Shull...there's some guys in this system that nobody yet realizes are going to take filthy to the level of a martial art.
Davis and Shull
Ray obviously was a great pick. Can't wait to watch him pitch. Sellers, I don't know. I like that he's parked a few this year.
I keep waiting for pennington to snap out of it, because he is pretty darn good.
Buck knows he's going to the show, hella cocky, and hella good.
Yeah
Some of these kids are almost too polished. What I like about Sellers is he plays the game like a kid should play it - balls out, take no prisoners, fight for every run even when you're up (or down) by 8.
