Should Oakland trade for Ben Broussard?

Would it be worth while for the A's to trade for Ben Broussard?

Star-divide

What do you think it would take to get him and would it be worth it.

With Eduardo Perez being dealed to the Mariners and Victor Martinez being moved to 1b due to lack of Catching ability and Ryan Garko being called up I think that Ben Broussard has to be on the market.

I think if we move DJ to another team and trade for Broussard it would be moer beneficial to the team.

This opens up the opportunity for more platooning.

At 1b we could have Nick Swisher against Lefties and Ben Broussard against Righties.

At LF we could have Bobby Kielty against Lefties and Nick Swisher against Righties.

What are you thoughts about this?

As I mentioned in another thread,
Broussard would be one of my desired targets--he and Kielty, combined, could be a legitimate .300 hitter with a .400 OBP and 20 HRs.

If I were the Indians, however, having lots of hitting yet still not winning, I would insist on some good pitching in any deal, and that would probably mean losing someone from the Blanton, Street, Windsor, Duke quartet.

Nah
I think we need Blanton if we were to go on a playoff run.

in my opinion blanton is hurting the A's more then
he's helping them

Huh??
5 of his last 7 starts have been 2 ER or less...and 2 of those were 8 innings or more.  Hurting more than helping is laughable.

How soon we forget his second half last year...

3 were 8 IP or more..even better

If trading Blanton means
starting Halsey or (gulp) Gaudin in his place, how is keeping Blanton hurting us more than helping us?

it's a combination of a lot of things for me.
blanton is very inconsistent. he's either very good or very bad. there's hardly ever any in between. i also agree with macha when it comes to joe fielding his position.

No arguments there--
but most pitchers are inconsistent, including anyone you could currently find to replace Blanton. Except those who would be consistently bad.

if they were to trade blanton wouldn't saarloos
start in his place?

Not until Harden gets back,
and not in 2007--if you trade Blanton, your 2007 rotation looks like Harden, Haren, Loaiza, Saarloos, and someone else. And that's if Harden if healthy.

Are you confident enough
to go ahead and trade Blanton right now? If you were to start a season with a rotation of Harden, Haren, Loaiza, Saarloos, and Halsey, it would be pretty mediocre to begin with--and if Harden went down at all, you may as well wave the white flag for the season.

it depends on who blanton is traded for. i just
don't think that blanton is that much better then saarloos or halsey.

Because Saarloos and Halsey
have been so consistent? Or because they've shown they're capable of dominating for an entire 4-month stretch? Or...?

this year blanton has not been much better then
saarloos or halsey. also if they were to trade blanton who's to say they wouldn't get another starting pitcher in the offseason?

Just this year,
Blanton's starts have been better than Halsey's, longer than Saarloos' and certainly no worse. And neither Halsey nor Saarloos has the track record Blanton put together last June-Sept. And Blanton makes the major league minimum.

I'm not a big Blanton fan, but one has to keep Saarloos and Halsey in perspective: Saarloos is no better than a #5 starter, and Halsey is no better than a #6 starter.

Seattle
making all the right moves right now. They are adding pieces that could put them in a better position here on out. I hope Beane doesn't stand pat until the trade deadline. The current line-up can't cut it. Even if we win the AL West, the team still will suck at hitting.

i think broussard is kind of a fluke.
he foes crush right handed pitching, but there's a reason he was platooned...i wouldnt give much more than a B prospect for him.

A guy who crushes RHP
crushes 3/4 of the starters in the league. And if you happen to have a guy who crushes LHP, like Kielty does, it's even more perfecter.

by Nico on Jul 1, 2006 10:31 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Eh
He's been around for a while, in fact he's going to turn 30 in a few more months.  I'm not sure where some of you are getting the idea that he is some godly RHP masher.  He had a great April this year and that's about it.

I suppose he'd be a decent rental player assuming we don't have to give up alot but considering what the Mariners gave up (approx B-grade prospect) to get Perez and the fact that Broussard has more value as the lefty part of the platoon, I think we'd be better off looking elsewhere.
