Interesting thread from U.S.S. Mariner...

A Mariner's fan and sometime friend of mine here at work sent me this link from the USS Mariner blog: http://ussmariner.com/2006/06/30/why-the-as-arent-that-good/.

It's an interesting take, and pretty spot-on in some of its points, but nothing we haven't ourselves pointed out from time to time. Though it would be of interest here at AN, and didn't see it on the DLD.

He's right...
in that the A's aren't very good because some haven't lived up to expectations and others have spent time on the DL.

But the A's are the best team on paper. Too bad the game isn't played on paper. Of course if it was played on paper I wouldn't want to watch it, let alone pay to sit and watch it in person! :-P

Like I've said from Day 1:
The M's are the A's best comp this year. Period.

If only...
...the A's were 9-1 against their best comp this year. Then, they would have nothing to worry about. Right?!?

HAHAH!!! Nice point:
Imagine if we were not so dominant against them...Hold on, didn't I say that two weeks ago when Blez asked who our toughest comp was?

Then I voted other!?!?! :)

HIgh on themselves
Boy, those guys are living in some kind of alternate universe.  The M's have played some good ball of late but all their drooling is unnecessary.  The A's are two games better and we have been limping through the season playing under our potential. Wait until our A's start playing well!

I agree that most of
the criticism is spot on, but the analysis also conveniently ignores Duke and Calero, and they are truly key--"front end" bullpen depth is very important, and apparently underrated, at least by that writer.

I agree that the A's are not a great team, even healthy--but they also may well be the best team in the division, even not healthy!

Now I am depressed.

They were right though. Our starting pitching not working out really screwed us.

pitching?
"Our starting pitching not working out really screwed us."

sorry, but as of yesterday the a's were second in the AL in runs allowed with 346, nine runs better than the white sox.

But we were supposed to be lights out.
That's why we were picked to win the WS. That and the pitching depth.

We do have a good staff. I agree with you on that but we don't have the staff pitching the way people predicted.

by IM4Oakgal on Jun 30, 2006 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions

True
We don't have the staff people predicted, but that's because we don't have the staff we expected.  Having Rich Harden for on 35 innings, having Loaiza hurt for much of the first part of the season, and the bullpen has been in disarray.

In games like tonight's,
we even see the impact of losing Joe Kennedy, who probably would have been the pitcher of choice in the 7th.
