A's Sign Sauerbeck

The A's have reportedly signed lefty Scott Sauerbeck who was recently released by the Cleveland Indians.

He was recently involved in a DUI case in which the woman who was driving his was intoxicated. In their attempt to evade authorities, they were found hiding in the bushes.

The question for us is whether or not he remains with the team short or longterm.

The question is...
Does Billy believe that DUI's are currently undervalued by the rest of the league?

I just want to know...
...what kind of bushes?

Look at all the replacement players hired by Beane during the years after the strike: Lidle, Menechino, Miller, Mahay, Tam. Probably saved a few bucks, since animosity from other players would be expected to harm "clubhouse chemistry."

Wow...
This guy's wife drives will get along with esteban.

"On May 30, Sauerbeck and a woman were arrested in Sheffield Village after police spotted the pitcher's car weaving at 3:45 a.m. He was the passenger in his 1966 Lincoln Continental convertible, which was being driven by Lily Miller.

Police say the pair attempted to evade officers by parking the car and going into a residential backyard. The home owner reported hearing voices outside and police found them hiding under some bushes.

Police charged her with drunken driving. Sauerbeck pleaded not guilty to obstructing official business and permitting someone intoxicated to drive his car. He will have a pretrial hearing June 22, with trial set for July 11."

You could call him...
"Shytbucket," or "Rosie," as he surely fell into the former, and has come out smelling like the latter.

Maybe, instead of dot races, we could let him and DUIza race go-karts around the upper deck?

That would be awesome:
DUI-dot-racing.

"It's Loaiza at .09% careening around the fourth turn...but here's Sauerbeck's mistress pumping around the final bend at .12%...and out of nowhere it's Sauerbeck's wife, completely sober and brandishing a 22 Magnum! Sauerbeck's mistress is dead, Loaiza has crashed into the rail, Sauerbeck's wife is in handcuffs, and the winner is...Marco Scutaro, driving a stick shift, with another clutch maneuver!!!"

Questions of character aside,
I think this is a good signing.  As I posted in the speculative "A's to sign Sauerkraut"-- I mean, Sauerbeck-- diary a few days ago, this gives us a lot of flexibility in the pen, which is what we need with many injury questions looming.

http://www.athleticsnation.com/comments/2006/6/18/134842/050/22#22

A few points I will rehash now that this appears to be more realistic than conjecture:

  1. Karsay retiring or no, Sauerbeck is still the better pitcher.  But regardless, with Karsay retired and Rincon having moved on to the Cards, we needed a former Indians pitcher in our bullpen.
  2. There is also the chance that Billy knows something about Kennedy's shoulder that we do not.
  3. Even if Bazooka Joe is healthy and almost ready to come back, perhaps this move has more to do with Harden's health and the starting rotation than the Pen, directly.  What I mean is that Beane probably sees Sauerbeck as the more effective LOOGY and now can use the more versatile JK in long relief situations or even in the rotation if he'd rather keep Halsey/Gaudin for long relief.
Bottom line, I think BB saw an available, undervalued arm that can help us in the short term, most notably by freeing Kennedy from a role that is relatively small in scope.  Sure, I haven't seen the figures of the signing, but assuming it's not too much $$ (and I can't imagine it would be) then this is a low-risk, high reward endeavor, that is worth taking.  IMHO, that is.
