Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Link Dump 6/19: I heart this team

If you missed Saturday's game, check out gotgreen's  pictures of the dugout in the bottom of the 17th.

College-like attitude visible with A's the more they win:

There are plenty of reasons why the A's were able to bounce back this month after yet another slow start.

You've got to put their upbeat, college-style attitude on the list. No, not at the top, where top-notch pitching, hitting and fielding belong. But certainly among the leaders.

Well...what else is on that list?

THE OTHER DUGOUT

Fun.

Lost somewhere in the middle of the Dodgers' 17-inning marathon with the A's on Saturday night was a veteran showing up a rookie.

In the eighth inning of the game that ended with Jae Seo walking in the winning run, second baseman Jeff Kent, a likely Hall of Famer, was on first base with rookie outfielder Andre Ethier at bat.

Kent tried to steal second. He had a good jump, and it looked as if he would easily be safe. But Ethier swung at the pitch, lofting a lazy fly ball into left field.

Kent watched the ball sail into the air -- it was obvious that it would be caught by Nick Swisher -- and, instead of retreating to first base, he got to second and took his helmet off as the ball was caught. Swisher threw to first for the double play.

Kent was later seen jawing at Ethier in the dugout. When asked if he thought Kent could have made it back, Ethier offered this: "It's a question you don't even need to ask," he said. "It's at his discretion if he wants to or not."

Flores was called up yesterday, and poor Jeremy Brown was sent back down. Also, Duke will pitch in Sacramento tonight. Woohoo!

And the A's have been playing so well lately, I failed to notice this: (scroll down)

Matt Kemp's stolen base in the second inning was the 11th straight time a runner had been successful against A's catcher Jason Kendall. After starting the year by throwing out eight of the first 14 attempted thieves, Kendall has caught just two of the last 23.

so much for Kendall's new footwork
at least he picked a runner off @ second though!

Any speculation as to the identity of the person to fill Karsay's roster slot?

by Zonis on Jun 19, 2006 10:41 AM PDT reply actions

It would seem to be
Scott Sauerbeck, although they may not keep up Flores long now that they have added Sauerbeck, so more roster shuffle to take place I am sure.  Might be nice to get an OFer on the roster with both Bradley and Kotsay out the last few games?

Even worse
It sounds like Kent may have been intentionally hurting his own team's chances of winning in order to show up the rookie. Amazing. And it's kind of funny that the Kent/Bradley blowup in the dugout last year was what led to the Bradley/Ethier trade in the first place.

Why the black hole?
Unfortunately 4SD doesn't have the agreement with MLB Extra Innings...

And since FSN Bay Area isn't doing any games of that series...

PFFFFT!

Stupid question....
Why doesn't SD have an agreement with EI?

I think I'm okay with missing those three games. As long as it isn't 16 DAYS worth of games I'm missing.

by Jennifer on Jun 19, 2006 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Beats me...
From what I understand (and anyone from the area can correct me), 4SD is a cable channel, but I think it's local, not regional.  So it acts like a local channel.  And maybe Cox, which owns 4SD, doesn't want their signal on satellite.  Just guesses, I dunno.

I'd like to know why the Phillies network, Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, isn't on Extra Innings, but the Cubs/White Sox (CSN Chicago) and Orioles (CSN Baltimore-Washington) are.

I'd also like to know why Blue Jays games (RSN and TSN) aren't available on EI either.

Damn!
I was already making plans to get to bed at a reasonable hour this week.

I'm assuming this means they've been added to EI's cable schedule as well as DirecTv, but I haven't checked yet. I think from yesterday's discussion maybe DirecTv doesn't have the problem of only having 10 stations available at one time (which in April and May were having to share space with the hockey package).

I'm quite sure I won't be seeing that Fox game on Saturday, though. It's regionalized, and even with all the network Bondslove I'm sure in the East we'll see NY-NY or Chi-Chi, but certainly not the Bay Area teams. (I lucked into seeing them on the Saturday game when the Rangers-Red Sox game was rained out a week ago, forcing Fox to let me see the A's beat Mussina for game 3 of the current streak). You live in the Midwest, won't you be seeing a Chicagofest?

by Faust on Jun 19, 2006 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions

No NY-NY Chi-Chi game on the 24th
It's:

1 P.M. GAME SUMMARIES:
1=Astros @ White Sox - 26% -- Josh Lewin, Lou Piniella
2=Reds @ Indians - 6% -- Kenny Albert, Chris Welsh
3=Phillies @ Red Sox - 46% -- Joe Buck, Tim McCarver, Ken Rosenthal

4 P.M. GAME SUMMARIES:
4=A's @ Giants - 21% -- Thom Brennaman, Steve Lyons
