Open Thread: Game 67 - A's vs. Dodgers

If you hear a loud "garumph!" emanating from the heavens, it's because interleague play begins in earnest today, as the A's host the Dodgers, Barry Zito vs. Brett Tomko. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the Dodgers' season to date has been their league-leading run production. Key contributors have included Nomar Garciaparra, who is batting .351 (185 at-bats), and Matt Kemp, whose ledger after 48 at-bats sits at .375 with 7 HRs. A couple of very familiar faces, Jeff Kent and Olmedo Saenz, round out the heart of the Dodger attack.

Meanwhile, tonight the A's try to hold onto first place, which is a lot more fun than trying to get there. With Milton Bradley's shoulder still bothering him, and Frank Thomas on the DL, the lineup is still a bit patchwork. On the one hand, tonight's A's lineup features one of the less powerful #3 hitters you'll find, but on the other hand it also features one of the hottest #8 hitters you'll find--the A's are 9-0 in the last nine games that Dan Johnson has started, as Johnson has gone 15/29 (.517).

The starting lineups:

Furcal
Lofton
Garciaparra
Kent
Saenz
Kemp
Cruz Jr.
Martin
Martinez

Kendall
Swisher
Melhuse
Chavez
Crosby
Johnson
Kielty
Payton
Scutaro
UPDATE: Kotsay was scratched from original lineup

Olmedo Saenz!!!
No freaking way.  I don't follow that league, I had no clue.

I was sure he was done after his stint here.  Damn.

Is the A's lineup correct?
Both Gameday and ESPN's preview have the 6-7-8 as:
Johnson
Payton
Kielty (DH)

Gameday has a third version of the lineup with Melhuse hitting third.  Probably a last minute lineup change or two.

A's-Dodgers once again
Let's celebrate the anniversary of when the A's played their first interleague game in 1997 against these same Dodgers.

Only this time, Zito vs. Tomko sounds a lot sexier than Telgheder vs. Nomo.

And if that were the case, then Mr. Loaiza wouldn't be with the A's ... Nomo!

MLB EI update. I called DirecTv, right. The guy says it's MLB's problem, call them. I call MLB, it's the provider's problem, call them back. I call DirecTv again. This time the girl could somewhat answer my question.

The schedule doesn't list anything after 6/14/06. Why? Apparently the "updated" schedule is released on the 18th of each month. If any of this weekend's games were being shown, it would've listed them since it went up until 6/18/06. The lady said if on the 18th the new schedule doesn't have anything for the A's, that's when I should call to bitch. Lovely.

Thanks.
The second person I spoke to at DirecTv really talked me off the ledge. Most of the games are on FSN (for one team or the other), they just aren't listed on the schedule. I'm going to assume, until the new schedule comes out, that they just aren't online.

No prob...
What's interesting is that the site for the cable version of Extra Innings isn't up to date, either (only shows Monday's game).  But the local cable company here gets schedule updates and posts them more frequently than they do.  So I look there instead.

the further story is that he rehabbed and was sent to the Rivercats and went AWOL, I believe.  Stories of perhaps some family problems, he went back to Mexico(?), then he ends up with the Dodgers.  It was weird.

From an old A's Mailbag By Kent Schacht
I would like to know what happened to Olmedo Saenz .Did they drop him or what? -- George

Last October, the A's bought out Saenz's contract for $50,000 instead of exercising a $1.2 million option for the 2003 season, but the club later signed him to a minor league deal. He is currently at the club's minor league complex in Phoenix at extended Spring Training rehabilitating the ruptured Achilles' tendon he suffered during Game 1 of the ALDS last fall. If he's healthy, since the A's have so few lefties coming off their bench, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Saenz could return to the big-league club sometime this season.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
I actually just found that on a Byrnse website...don't have the date or exact link.  But I do remember that he rehabbed, then didn't report to the Rivercats.  And he's from Panama, not Mexico.
