Daily Link Dump, 14Jun: Life, the Universe, and Larry Davis
So, how does one do this?
Game Recaps?
MLB.com/Oakland
Chron
Trib
Injury Reports? Duchscherer and Kennedy Of note in the first article: He hasn't felt this good in a long, long time, according to Larry Davis. That means it's probably not true, right? Hopefully, of course, it is.
I found this when I searched "Oakland Tribune" on Google News... Trouble from the Gnat camp.
"It's a bunch of [junk]," he said. "This [deleted] team is not going to be good like this. If it doesn't change, it's going to be [messed] up. . . . It's like we never do something right. They only want to put you down on the ground, make you feel dirty and make you feel bad." - Armando Benitez
The joys of KNBR, or at least, the negative aspect of it. There's some other flowery language in that article as well.
Meanwhile, out here: La New Bears are struggling to maintain the lead they've built up. Yes, it's the CPBL, where the outfielders get worse jumps than Eric Byrnes, sometimes even going the wrong way, diving, and missing. It hurts to watch. (In case you care, La New signed Chen Chin-feng, the former Dodger, last season.)
Here's a Catfish Stew link, since I read it. Gives light on the Zito situation, and what Billy might do.
In two completely different stories from Saint Louis, Ankiel's return is delayed, and... well, we know about Pujols' trainer already.
And this post from over half a year ago still holds true.
Are the footballs in Germany behaving like knuckleballs?
Some advertiser needs a lesson in scoreboard reading.
To conclude, I'd like to thank AN on keeping me updated on all things Oakland A's while I'm halfway across the globe. It's hard being an NRAF.
And the DLD is being posted at 18:38, or 3:38PST. I supposed I could wait another 5 1/2 hours and post tomorrow's DLD?
That said, have fun with the thread. I won't be here to control it... I'll be asleep. And I didn't do that bad, did I?

We already saw LL guys get mad
I feel for 'em, unlike Halo fans.
Various Hornfans comments
From madscientist: we'll see how he looks once the heat of minneapolis takes its toll on him.
Followed by HenryGandorf: and the intense spotlight of the local media.
Finally, WideHorns: And the fact that he has to share the state with the likes of Prince and uhh...uhhh....other famous people.
Street vs. Mariners
Endust: Fifth consecutive save - or should we call it a "street"?
TPE: huston street : the mariners :: godzilla : a midget
I heart TPE. From another thread: the dominance of huston street knows no bounds
College Worlds Series dogpile thread:
notanative starts out with this: How do you know Oregon State is a serious contender this time around? They didn't dogpile after beating Stanford tonight.
WideHorns: CWS?? You mean to tell me that even though Texas isn't going to be there......they are still going to have it? Communists.
Eh. Nothing like the ninja comments.
nope
I myself did a post-doc at UT...
Moving to Austin soon
After living my entire life in California, I'm moving to Austin to attend grad school at UT in the next month or two. Still learning to say "Hook 'em" with a straight face.
Or Jacknifer.
Wait, that was a little much.
Lookout Landing recap
Jeff from Lookout Landing rules. If you have the chance, read his post titled '31-34' which is his recap of the M's sweeping the Angels this past weekend.
If it weren't for the A's, I think I'd be an M's fan.
I don't like him calling our announcers "dry", but then again, being a SoCal A's fan with no A's broadcasting access, I can't give an honest opinion of our A's broadcast team.
Enjoy!

Harden's status and Will Carroll update
... Davis wouldn't give a specific update on the condition of Harden's sprained elbow ligament, saying that "this is a slow healing process. We're not going to turn this into a vigil." ... Davis reiterated that, contrary to a Baseball Prospectus report, there are no plans at this time for Harden to undergo elbow-ligament replacement (Tommy John) surgery. ...
From Urban:
Davis, clearly disturbed by a recent report suggesting that Rich Harden's injured right elbow might require Tommy John surgery, reiterated that it won't and said he's not going to offer any further updates on Harden's rehab until the day Haren [must mean "Harden" here] is ready to play catch for the first time. ...
Finally, I e-mailed Will Carroll to ask about his Harden report.
Me: Will, your comment on Harden has set off a tumult at Athletics Nation.
When you say Harden is 'reportedly' headed for TJ, what do you mean? The word 'reportedly' implies (usually, but you may have meant it differently) a report, i.e. something public, but you seem to be the only one reporting this. What can you tell us about your sourcing for this? Thanks
Will Carroll: Special. I'll clarify --- it's said to be a moderate to severe sprain, a type that seldom heals without surgery. I have a source on this, but cannot say anything more.
Was I being insulted with that "special"? Anyway, it seems that it's not based on anyone "reporting" that TJ is coming, but rather an inference drawn from his information on the severity of the injury. The A's either disagree about the severity of the sprain, or disagree about the course of treatment (or I suppose they could just be lying about the probability of surgery, as so many seem to feel). Seems to be room to hope we'll see Harden back this year--he was throwing 97 even with the damn injury, after all.
I guess we'll find out, eventually.
interesting stuff
carroll wrote:
"It's not looking good for Rich Harden. The oft-injured pitcher is reportedly headed for Tommy John surgery, ending his season and damaging the hopes of the Athletics, though there is no official confirmation. The team is celebrating its sweep of the Yankees, but behind the scenes, the team is trying to plan out how it will deal with the loss of their co-ace. Harden left just four innings into his return from the DL, injuring his elbow in a return from what is now being reported as an avulsion of his oblique rather than the previously indicated lower back injury."
carroll initially said reportedly headed for tommy john surgery and ending his season.
now that seems to have changed to reportedly in moderate to severe pain that seldom heals without surgery.
that's a big difference.
maybe harden will end up having TJ surgery, but he's not scheduled to as of now, and that is what carroll reported.
this was also discussed in the post-game thread.
it just seems like bad journalism to me, and i find it bizarre that people could defend carroll and blame the a's front office...

Carroll's an interesting source
On Carroll... Like a lot of blogging, the role he plays is partly that of reporter and partly that of gossip columnist. He has a lot of very real sources, I'm sure, but he doesn't require 100% confidence to put something out there. I do he worded his piece rather sloppily--when you start talking about Rich Harden, you have to expect a lot of people are going to be pouring over your words like Kremlinologists.
The tag line Carroll used in his e-mail signature was this quote: "If you were supposed to watch your mouth all the time I doubt your eyes would be above it." That kind of goes with what I said above about not waiting for 100% certainty before running with something.
A friendly suggestion for Will Carroll
Why don't you come over to my place and make yourself comfortable on my couch and sit there while I scream at you for six hours straight?
And by the way, don't bother us again.
OK?

He got that quote from a song:
Band: Drive-By Truckers
Album: A Blessing And a Curse
Year: 2006
Since he is a DBT fan, I will cut him some slack.
The same song also has this more poetic line for Mr. Carrol:
"So I'll meet you at the bottom if there really is one, they always told me when you hit it, you know it."
I think he understands this.
As evidence of his mea culpa.
Although, if his prognasticating eventually becomes fact, I guess this quote would be better served for the A's.
You weren't being insulted with 'special'.
And so they should. I can say that "reportedly, Will Carroll eats puppies and poops Purina", but that doesn't make it any more than my best guess.
He should know better. When I scooped on NFTN that Jimmy Shull was getting Tommy John, I didn't go on one not-wanting-to-be-named source, I got two.
That way, I knew of what I spoke.

J?rgen Klinsmann
if germany and the usa don't do well, could he became the new coach for team usa?
Klinsmann's castle
The hopes and fears of Germany's controversial national coach
http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=7037563
He has indeed proved a reformer. He has centralised power so that he can prepare his team properly. He has decreed a more offensive strategy, and tried out many younger players. He has hired trainers versed in modern methods, including (horror!) an American fitness guru. He is fond of management fads, communicating by e-mail and using motivational training. Despite (or perhaps because of) this, Mr Klinsmann has been vilified--not least for continuing to live in California. The DFB's board has rejected his candidate as chief talent scout, even though this job is central to his plans.
Will Mr Klinsmann stick around after the World Cup? Conventional wisdom says that the answer depends on how well Germany does. But he may also wonder if the DFB can ever change. Even were Germany to win, which looks unlikely, Mr Klinsmann might prefer to go back to California.
Yeah

They rotate divisions.
I didn't know if they'd start
They played STL in STL a few years ago. Icky series. I would assume they'd switch this time. The A's played the Pirates and Reds at home, STL in MO... I don't remember the others.
<sob>
Harden versus Reds.
<sob>
That's lots of sobbing.
Why <sob> all the time?
I'm sobbing now because Harden is dead.
That game... Chavy was out with his hand. Joe Morgan was calling the game... Chavy was in the booth, smooshed between Jon and Joe.
<cues Barbara Streisand>
Memories
Light the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories
Of the way we were
I remember
Haren and the A's agree with us:
"Looking back, our turning point may have been when Jason Kendall hit that home run. Everyone in the clubhouse was thinking that. It was his first home run in a long time (961 at-bats) so everyone had a little fun with it and guys seemed to loosen up a bit. Huston Street, who has the locker next to me, turned to me that night after the game and said, "You watch, that's what's going to get us going again." Sure enough, we've been playing pretty well ever since then."
Will Carroll's latest UTK
One thing the Harden situation is not comparable to is the A.J. Burnett injury. Burnett's UCL is intact and, in fact, is still in the "honeymoon" period. Burnett has plenty of issues in the elbow involving bone chips and scarring, but his UCL is healthy, so trying to comp Harden here is wrong. Burnett is making decent progress--if slow--as he moves towards a return. The best sign was not the five no-hit innings in Triple-A, but rather the lack of swelling or pain afterward. If Burnett shows confidence in his arm, he'll be a big addition to the Jays, if a couple months later than expected.

huh?
Do we kill Will Carroll now, or simply stun him and tag him for future tracking?
Harden Injury (2006) = Dotel Injury (2005)
Dotel chose to have surgery, telling A's fans he would play for us for free, then signing w/ the Yankees for a lot of money.
Rest/Rehab or Surgery: We'll see which way is the best later this year/next year.

New US Poet Laureate is Donald Hall
I would link to the NY Times story today which quotes from a baseball poem of his, but my rudimentary HTML skills have failed me. (I note that over at Daily Kos, they have set up the comments form so that links, bolding, block quotes, etc. happens automatically. I think it's handy, but those of you who have invested a lot of time in learning HTML might differ.)
formatting is automagic here
bold happens when i surround a word with astericks
italics when it's surrounded by underscores
i don't know how to block quote, but it's probably just as easy
