Vitalstatistix: How many Comments Have you Made?

One of the coolest things about AN is the user-profile pages.  Click on any user's name and you can then access every diary AND EVERY COMMENT he or she has ever made.  I occasionally feel guilty for having wasted too much time at AN, but at least my entire body of "work" here remains accessible to me--and the same holds for every AN user.  Lately I've been thinking that the archives may be too good to be true, and that it will be discovered that the server runs remarkably smoother once they're all deleted.  This would be a great tragedy, and so in the spirit of enjoying our own personal AN libraries while we have them, I bring you this diary of Fun With Your User Profile.

Using your handy-dandy user profile, you can answer the following questions:

  1. What was the date of your first AN comment or diary (whichever came first)?
  2. How many diaries have you posted?
  3. And of course--How many comments have you made?
I'll go first
  1. 10/01/04
  2. this is my 32nd
  3. 1,159
Extra bonus statistic--for the sabermetrically inclined.  Comments per day (CPD).  Mine is 1.87. Also, please chime in with any other statistics you think ought to grace the back of your AN-user bubble gum card.

that's going to be hard for some people to figure out, since the comments from the original AN are not available...

my AN 2.0 date: 09/27/2004, after returning from a summer vacation in india.

it was interesting to look back on my comments after the zito/mecir game against the angels.
apparently i was a macha hater back then.  i also didn't think any of the big three should be traded, although i changed my mind as soon as two of them were.  pass the kool aid!

2.220.. LOL
3.6093 comments... whoa...

Here is what my inaugural comment was:

Jeff Kent

He could be a possiblity for us. His salary cap is moderate (5-6 million range) and if we free up cap space by trading rhodes and redman, this might be a reality. I'm sure we could ship off hatteberg, rhodes and some prospect in a package deal similar to this maybe: hatteberg, rhodes, and rheinecker to the orioles for melvin mora or something, though for a high profile player like that we might have to give up zito. One player i would be drooling for is bobby abreu. What kind of deal could we put together for him? Another possible free agent is burnitz, he is in the same price range as kent i think. Can someone tell me what they both made last year?

LOL, what a horrible trade offer.

What was my first diary? A copy paste of my first comment, haha.

lets see
  1. 06/25/2005 "(The Cubs)get exposure on a Yankees Red Sox level, while the White Sox don't. The Cubs are more familiar and it's hard to like a team you don't know despite the sucess. This happens all the time, there are more Gians and Dodger fans than A's fans, even the A's have been more sucessful over the last 5-6 years."
  2. It shows two, but I recall deleted a third.
  3. 1257 (1258 as soon as I click post)

In that time, I've only commented 170 times.

And then sort by DLD comments and Game Thread comments and so on. That would be entertaining.

Of course, 'Cotty has a real life, unlike me, so he'd never think of doing anything like this.

Well,
This is comment #2992. The first was on the 9th of May, 2005. It was attached to a game thread, a 13-5 loss to the Red Sox. The one preceding Dotel's awfulness, part I.

My diary number is not exactly correct, since many are deleted, but 41. Many of these are useless. 15 are GoG, 13 are WinExp. The rest are truly useless.

Since 3/30/2005, the day after I started the job that I left last week.  Actually, it was using their site (http://a9.com) and their "discover" feature (that they've since retired) that led me to AN in the first place.  Ironic that my then-new employer's product would introduce me to something that caused me to waste so much work time!

I am still proudest of my third comment, which went almost completely unnoticed (I got one response on it) but that's what I get for posting a limerick in a Haiku thread :-)

These preseason games are ridiculous
Kirk Saarloos' performance did tickle us
But no Cruz control
Could lighten the toll
And meanwhile the loss was Harikkala's

Rest Mulder? (1.25 / 0)
This is really painful to watch...
I'm baffled by Mulder's struggles.
Maybe he IS hurt.  Maybe all those IP has caught up to him.  Maybe it's mental.

But right now, he is not reliable.  I don't like the idea of him starting such an important game in Anaheim.  Heck, I have more confidence in (the ROAD) Redman right now than in MM.

I also don't like the idea of Blanton starting that game.  If MM does start on Sun (which I think he will), the A's have to keep him on a VERY short leash.  Maybe have Duke and Blanton pitch 3 innings each... I don't know.

Whatever MM's problems are, I really hope he overcomes them.  We need a healthy and effective Mulder!

my stats
  1. My first post on new AN, the day it opened, 9/21/04, was truly fascinating: "Thanks blez and kos. The clock seems to be about 4 hours ahead." (kos said he would fix it). I think I had started posting on AN 1.0 sometime in the first couple of months of that season.
  2. Only 14 diaries.
  3. "Only" 2320 comments, which comes to around 3.7/day.
Special claims to fame:
a) I believe I have the lowest user number of anyone who still posts, other than Blez and kos.

b) This diary I posted during the dark times last May got 25 recommendations, which may be a record. Some of the not-entirely-serious predictions in it even almost came true, sort of.

I'm a bit of a newbie
I didn't discover AN until 11/15/05, and my first comment was posted on 11/16/05... It was in reference to the steroid issues surrounding the large ESPN magazine story...

Since then, I've posted an additional 352 comments for a total of 353... which averages out to 1.69 comments per day...

I have yet to post a diary - Not sure why - maybe a little intimidated to do so (I think I am more of a counter-punc...er... I mean counter-commenter) but one of these I'll nut up to do it if I find the proper inspiration...

Although I found it late - I have been telling many people about this fantastic site, and am now a proud AN member :)

Kinda Fun to Review
1.10/6/04

I'll let the statisticians figure out the comments per day.

The funny thing about commenting on various topics is that I run in and out of my office to make them so a comment that starts out at 8:30 am may not be completed for hours depending on how busy I am. It can be looked upon almost as "drive by commenting". Very hard to carry a conversation that way.

The best part about all of this is that there is a means to communicate with so many minds who all share the same passion about their team. I always hated to read opinions in the newspaper and not be able to respond. As a means of deepening one's understanding of our team and its trends, there remains no better outlet than this one.

I'm always on this site, but I hardly ever post.  I've never posted a diary.  My comments are under 100, probably.  But I soak up as much as I can, go back and read through the comments on the DLDs and the daily main page post.  I love getting different points of views on this one same team we all love.

Devo, where do find the time...
<sound of roaring engine driving at 75MPH through the AN zone>

...to look up another contributor's # of posts?

Now in terms of statistical analysis are >80% of AN's posts delivered by <20% of the contributors?

"I've been accused of using too many words...I suppose that's like accusing Mozart of using too many notes." Bill King

by Gerard on Jun 13, 2006 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

it took like 13 seconds ...
I would think that the distribution is even more skewed than that ... maybe something like 90% come from the top 2.5% (~100 users) of contributors.

by devo on Jun 13, 2006 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Now did you perform a "trial run"
to determine the 13 seconds necessary to ascertain your answer or was that based upon a standard deviation of let's say 1.5 seconds(depending on internet speed)? But what I really want to know is if the P value was <.005?
"I've been accused of using too many words...I suppose that's like accusing Mozart of using too many notes." Bill King

by Gerard on Jun 13, 2006 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I determined it would take 13 seconds
mathematically ...

Since it took my 1 minute, 37 seconds to determine my own number and my total was roughly 65 times what I anticipate his to be, I figured it out using the following formula (m = my time, T = my total, H = time to figure his total)

F = (m * 1.73) / N
I = (A - 14.793)^3.23
R = (I * pi + 14 * (area of the Coliseum's IF)
E = R^(height of mount davis)
M = E * (Swisher's HR total) / (Kendall's Slg)
A = M ^ 1/(Mecir's era in 2003)
C = 13
H = C([43+M*E^I]*[size of Bond's testicals]) + C
Answer = 13 seconds

If you work it out, it's really quite obvious.

Damn, what did I go to medical school for?...Somehow I thought Byrnes' speed from Home to 2nd Base had to be factored in, of course, prior to the banishment of amphetamines. Now if we can just check for HGH in urine...
"I've been accused of using too many words...I suppose that's like accusing Mozart of using too many notes." Bill King

by Gerard on Jun 13, 2006 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks man ...
Byrnes' speed was factored in, I just didn't have time to explain how I figured C.

C:

H = 1
A = H + Eric Byrnes' career errors
I = A / averageo of 1948 and 1949 leader in triples among USC alumni
R = # of SH by Joe Morgan in his 2 MVP seasons + I
O = Career BB allowed by Jose Canseco - R
N = Career triples for McGwire / O
F = Rookie record for HRs + N
R = # of wins for 1956 A's / F
E = # of saves for Lefty Grove in 1929^R

So, C = (# of GIDP for Tenace, Bando, Jackson and Rudy in 1973)/E

From March 21, 2005:

"Speaking about Swisher, I watched two separate sessions of batting practice while in Phoenix and the one thing that jumped out at me during those sessions was the power of Swisher.  To qualify that statement I will admit that Durazo and Chavez did not bat in either of those two sessions.  However, Dan Johnson did, as well as Byrnes and Crosby.  Nobody drove the ball as far and as consistently far as Swisher did."

The power that I saw demonstrated in spring training 2005 is manifesting itself in the summer of 2006!

Lurker before posting but this was my first post, in G&G Girls' thread about Tim Hudson.  I found out about AN being bored in the offseason and looking for ANY news about the A's.  Addicted aproximately 10 minutes after viewing.

Hudson's first game

I was at that game in San Diego.  I'll never forget it, hearing about this kid Tim Hudson, and he goes in there and strikes out 11!

He pitched great, he shouldve got the win.  If you think our bullpen is bad now, picture the combo of Buddy Groom and Doug (slow, slower, and slowest) Jones blowing the game.  Also note that Ryan Christiansen dropped a routine flyball in the 8th inning leading to the blown game.

You knew that Hudson was gonna be something special though after that game.

AN is a great site, and I have lost hundreds if not thousands of hours of productivity here.

"A question (1.25 / 0)
This may be something that was discussed on an earlier thread, but it's something I don't see here.

When Chavy's contract was being extended, it was reported he was talking to BB about certain assurances that, I believe, was who else was going to be held on to. I have to believe this was who of the big 3.

Now Chavy & Huddy are the elder statesmen of the team & good friends, so my guess is that BB plans to hold on to Huddy, but I could be wrong.

Thoughts?

We devotees of  Wordyball know that none of these stats capture the true value of what a poster brings to the AN table.  Where's the words-per-post metric?!  Now there's your market inefficiency!

So many great memories
As the former Reginald Stephen Shipp Bixby, my first comment was on 9/21/04, although I was on AN 1.0 before that.

Thinking bout the early days of AN reminds me of when jrbh thought he was being stalked. That was hilarious. It's hard to top that comedy.

I've posted 11 incredible diaries, but only 269 comments. I suppose it's time for a Grumpy AN User's Diary of the Month post.
