Anyone else see the Simpsons tonight

On the Simpsons tonight...

Star-divide

Bart and his pal were working a scam of painting house numbers on the curb and charging the people for their work that they didnt ask for.

When Homer refuses to pay them Bart and his crew leave one digit off his number. Homer says he will get it done himself and he won't screw it up.

His curb ends up saying 74Oakland A's - Greatest Team Ever

This officially makes Simpsons the greatest show on television.

A's tribute on the Simpsons, & Tim Hudson
I did see the episode & got a huge kick out of it.

I also had to comment on the Tim Hudson quote in your signature, from the Zito/Hudson commercial about the space-time continuum.

A few years ago, I was at the Coliseum volunteering for the Oakland Zoo on a kid's day event & Huddie was at the next booth, ready to sign autographs.

I asked him if he wanted to see our hisssing cockroaches.

His reply?
"Uh-no."

Couldn't believe my eyes at first
Seriously. I mean, why would Homer be painting something about the A's? That's my obsession. But the joke kept going, and by the time the car showed up, I found myself on the floor twitching uncontrollably and struggling for breath. Only this time because I was laughing so hard.

So that's Gene and Sal in the front seat. I suppose that's Reggie in the middle in the back, and the guy to his right kind of looks like Rudi. I don't know who the guy in the back left is supposed to be.

So, who is AN hating on today?

I listened to every minute that game from the pregame to the postgame, the one minute I left the room, they announced me! I had no idea until my dad called and told me.

possible (though unlikely) explanation
Sam Simon, one of the creators of the Simpsons, was at Stanford in '74 (with me). I don't know if he went to any of the World Series games, but one of his best friends, whose name has turned up in Simpsons episodes, did.

by vk on May 8, 2006 7:24 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Another possible (though unlikely)
explanation: one of the executive producers of the Simpsons, Richard Sakai, is a graduate of Ygnacio Valley High School in Concord (my alma mater).  It's not inconceivable that he grew up in the Bay Area as an A's fan in the seventies.

(Other luminaries who have graduated from this unassuming high school are Damian Jackson and the immortal Lance Blankenship.)

Another explanation...
Their address is 743 Evergreen Terrace... So it had to be the '74 something...

Or the unforgettable
champions of the 1743 Englishmen's League, the Bobcockers of Smithford-upon-Avonshire.

by salb918 on May 8, 2006 8:11 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

correction
It's pronounced Bobcockers, but it's spelled Bobfeatherstonehaugh. And Bill James claims they outproduced their Pythagorean expectation by 6 wickets and an innings.

by Apricot on May 8, 2006 8:38 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wrong
Simpson's Address is 742 Evergreen Terrace, not 743

Why would I be bitter?
DLS is only the better-maintained, athletically-superior, financially-better-off neighbor school that happens to share a property line.

My senior year of high school was a good year for the football; so good, in fact, that a buzz built around the YV-DLS match, with pundits predicting that if any team could end the DLS winning streak (is it over yet?), it would be YV.  If memory serves, YV briefly held the lead in the first quarter and was only down by three at the half, before getting blown out in the third and fourth quarters.  You would never guess that we lost the game - the next day at school, people were celebrating the moral victory of at least keeping it close against the DLS powerhouse.

Yeah it is over
151 I believe. But still undefeated in the Bay Area. The last game of "The Streak" was my graduating year, 2004. I still have the ticket from the final win. Then, in 05, they went up to Washington to play Bellvue... who pretty much out De La Salled De La Salle, 38-20.

And yeah, going there, I just remember how badly YV hated us. I had to cover a YV/Antioch basketball game earlier this year, and it was my first time stepping onto YV's campus. I felt so weird, like, an intruder.

You stepped foot on the campus?
It hasn't been that long since I left, but I understand the school has fallen into a greater state of disrepair than when I attended.  It's too bad - there were a number of wonderful teachers there who have retired or been driven off by administrative infighting.  If I had high school age kids, I would do my best to get them out of the YVHS district.

I never cared much for the rivalry between the two high schools.  The same kids that threw eggs and water balloons at me and my friends were the ones who were into the whole rivalry, so we did our best to stay away.  The first school rivalry I took seriously was UC Berkeley Chemistry versus Stanford Chemistry ("University of Caliornium Berkelium - but still no Stanfurdium").  Caltech vs. MIT just doesn't have that kind of animosity.

Yeah, a 7th grade science teacher I had ...
was a Cal grad and was very proud to teach us about Californium and Berkelium ... not that I actually remember anything about them ...

Refresher course
The NWFAQ will tell you all about possible fission applications for californium and berkelium (actually, they're a bit light on berkelium).

the streak
the streak was started in my freshman year.  i went to DLS.  Aaron Taylor and Amani Toomer were both on that team and both went to the NFL.

I think Sakai was mentioned in the episode.

I disagree
The Simpsons was the best show in the history of television long before last night.
