There's wireless internet in the Coliseum!

I'm here at the game (with FreeSeatUpgrade) with my work laptop, and I'm here to say that they have free wireless internet access here in the Coliseum! Why hasn't this been publicized? The signal strength ain't so high, but so what?

Aaargh! Swisher almost made a sweet catch! Haren searches for confidence!

Very nice.
So how was the atmosphere just now?

Who won the dot race?

And get off the laptop before we call you a gnat fan.

Reopened the laptop just now
Atmosphere is quite Clevelandic- plenty of Indians fans here. Among A's fans, it's much happier now, post-homerun.

What the heck is that weird hum from the tarps on the right side? It's been here every night game so far.

OK, closing this thing. Must watch game.

People in the game thread
manage to be on the computer and watch the game at the same time.

wow, can you imagine
game threads with live in-game updates?? Just like ESPN and their pitcher interviews of last year, but not NEARLY as annoying!!!!

me too
I have no intention of bringing a laptop to the game

by OaklandSi on May 3, 2006 11:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I had the thing with me anyway
Came direct from work and I won't be leaving my laptop in the car in the BART lot, so I figured I'd fire the thing up between innings and see if the ol' Coliseum had entered the 21st century yet. And it had!

Normally, I wouldn't mess with a laptop during a game- I mean, why? Thing is, I sometimes work from home via internet, which means I could "work from home" while at a midweek day game. Yeah, it would suck to have to deal with work-related crap distracting me from the game... but I'd still be at the ballpark, which beats the hell out of listening to the game while at my desk. There's no beer in my office, see... not even frosty malts.

I hear ya
I was just commenting on the general notion of fans coming to the game, laptop out to blog with while the game is going on. The image of baseball games with thousands of fans in the stands typing away --- instead of watching the games, cheering or booing, watching for foul balls and eating and drinking --- was a bit too much for this old fan!

At Tue Game
I was SO annoyed, I had 3 laptops around me plus numerous people conducting business on cellphones!

I sort of expect this at pac bell, but the fever has spread to Anaheim.  My son came to the conclusion that we were in "be seen" seats, and that they needed to work to afford them.  Pretty good for an 11 year old.

while I'm GM, I'd get the black uniform tops back into the mix, make high socks mandatory and add a beer tap in the press box-Mychael Urban

That's clever ...
but if my job would let me I would absolutely go to weekday games, knowing that I'd have to spend half the time working ... it's still better than not being at the game ...

Same here
This is good to know. I can now bring my work to the game. Whoo hoo!

since when?
EIO was complaining earlier in the season about the lack of wireless access at the coliseum.

Where were you sitting?
If you were behind the plate in the second deck, that probably explains it.

My guess was a press box connection
We didn't try walking around to check signal strength at different sites, even during the interminable 7th inning.  But yeah, Plaza level.

They had it locked down last year
They used WPA in the press box. I remember catching signal from the third deck. I also remember security asking me not to use my laptop a couple of times.

You blew the surprise...
that was a big part of Ignacio De La Fuente's campaign to convince Lew to stay in Oakland.  Mayor Brown is still courting Tandy by the way.

Doesn't that concern anyone
What exactly are they looking for when they search your bags at the game? Post 911 I assumed it was WOMD (joke), pipe bombs etc. Wouldn't a lap top be great in that capacity? How can that be on the "approved" list over a bottle?

I can't even bring in my daughter's diaper bag (that happens to be a backpack, because all others look like purses...or european...i digress). This makes no sense to me.

They've never even noticed the laptop
And I go to plenty of games straight from work with a backpack stuffed full of suspicious-looking geekoid hardware (power supplies, external HDs, weird cables, etc). In fact, I've never had any search go beyond a lethargic poking around in the top layer of junk in the pack. I have no idea what they're looking for. A gallon jug of Kirkland brand retsina? A chrome-plated 8-hose hookah emblazoned with the face of Enver Hoxha? Several dozen D batteries to throw at visiting outfielders?

it's those damn light sticks and bubble liquids!
Bubble liquids, bubble machines, or light sticks are not permitted in the Stadium.

The link
Confuses me more. I can bring in a diaper bag, but not a packback diaper bag. I can't bring in a lap top bag, but I can bring in a lap top.

Argh...

It begs the question- what is security looking for in the bags if they aren't finding laptops? Seriously harder to hide a gun then a laptop? Really?

I've found that you can bring in anything ...
except specifically banned items (ie booze) as long as you can stuff it into a plastic shopping bag.

Can't bring a backpack? No problem - empty it and stuff it and its contents into a couple of shopping bags ... you're set.

When I was in baltimore last year, I did that with a large backpacking pack - stuffed it and a week's worth of clothes in 5 shopping bags and I was set ...

am I the only one with a Treo?
Not a dismissive comment -- I'm genuinely curious is anyone else has been able to actually log on and post to AN using a smartphone/PDA with an Internet browser. I've only been able to get mine to log on -- it won't let me post ... which, as the last two days have demonstrated, may be a good thing. :)
