DLD: the Daily Injury Dump, May 17, 2005

It's called the DLD, but it feels more like the "Daily Injury Dump."  From today's SFGate:

"Outfielder Milton Bradley "could well be back at square one," Macha said, after Bradley aggravated his oblique muscle strain Saturday. Designated hitter Frank Thomas (quadriceps) might rejoin the lineup tonight, and Macha also hopes reliever Joe Kennedy (biceps) will be available tonight.

None of Oakland's other ailing pitchers is close to returning, from starters Rich Harden (back) and Esteban Loaiza (back) to relievers Justin Duchscherer (elbow) and Jay Witasick (ankle). The A's hope Loaiza can pitch in a simulated game Friday and Harden can throw a bullpen session Monday. "

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/05/17/SPG0IISC9K1.DTL

Zack Greinke is expected to throw batting practice:

"Right-hander Zack Greinke is scheduled to throw live batting practice Thursday for the first time since returning from an extended absence to deal with psychological issues.

Greinke got the go-ahead after a 62-pitch workout Monday in Surprise.

A revised workout plan calls for Greinke to throw 30 pitches Thursday to hitters, then have a regular bullpen workout Saturday before pitching two innings Monday in what club officials term a "controlled atmosphere."

Nick Swisher and Joe Blanton:
Party Animals
Stiff drinks? No problem! Shots? You bet! The two players -- not the first out-of-town athletes to be lured by the delicious temptations of New York City's nightlife -- helped close the bar, says our snitch. Blanton, who wasn't pitching the next day, picked up the $1,000 tab for two bottles of Level One Vodka.

But in four at-bats at Yankee Stadium the next day, Swisher only got one hit.

Unfortunately, Chastity wasn't working at 40/40 the next night, where owner Jay-Z and galpal Beyoncé partied with Derek Jeter, Johnny Damon and outfielder Bubba Crosby to celebrate the birthday of Damon's wife, Michelle. Cristal and apple martinis were served, with some members of the group staying till 4 a.m. Next day, Crosby got his first strikeout all week, going 1 for 3, and Damon and Jeter both went 1 for 4 in Sunday's stinker, when the Bombers lost to the A's 5 to 1.

Frankie displaces Melhuse?
If Big Frank comes back to the lineup, will he replace hot Adam in the lineup?

Saw Melhuse's post-game interview, he said he's happier now he knows he's getting his 4 at bats almost everyday, instead of every 7-plus days.

The guy just wants to play. And rake!

Hey Saint
During last night's telecast, Fosse said something to the effect that it was good to be back in Oakland and hear the drummers again.  Then they zoomed on ya.

Wow!!!
Last night was definitely an inspired night, as some have pointed out already...

I respect Fosse so much that reading that gave me chills.

As a group we were just feeling it last night. From the first time I touched my skins my hands were flying.

While taint is everywhere and baseball is certainly no different, it's important that it be treated with open attention-Devo

I think it requires (free) registration.

Here's a little something in grey you can read without registration:

"We (are) the most privileged guys in the world right here. You get to play a game for a living. I love this. I've wanted to do this since I was 6 years old, and now that I've gotten the opportunity, I'm going to take full advantage of it."

Swish is a monster
Look at this list:

OPS Leaders - Major League

  1. Pujols 1.266
  2. Giambi 1.134
  3. Thome 1.128
  4. Hafner 1.095
5. Swisher 1.079

That's #5 for around 200 players who qualify with enough at-bats. Wow.

by arch on May 17, 2006 9:32 AM PDT   0 recs

More stat for thought
OPS Ranking ML
#162 Crosby 0.647
#180 Sexson 0.594

Kendall?
#72 0.703

by arch on May 17, 2006 9:44 AM PDT   0 recs

some more stats
kendall, C, 3hr in 2004, $11m, .704 OPS
beltre, 3b, 48hr in 2004, $13m, .582 OPS
sexson, 1b, 45hr in 2003, $13m, .594 OPS

that's no excuse for the kendall trade or for kendall's performance, but just be glad you're not a mariners fan.

The thing is, we didn't sign him to that contract,
Everyone complains about Kendalls contract, but even though we traded for him at that price, he wouldn't have received that much from the A's.  They are smart enough not to pay him that much, but not smart enough not to trade for him when he is making that much.

A's up 2 on the giants
Small blurb in yesterday's Glenn Dickey
http://www.glenndickey.com/_gd.php?view_one=yes&which=371

"The A's and the Giants have split six of their nine yearly inter-league series. The A's took last year's, 4-2, to take a 26-24 overall lead. This year should be another tight one. The teams have virtually identical records and both have key components out, outfielder Moises Alou for the Giants, starting pitcher Rich Harden for the A's."

Just an FYI, in case anyone was wondering where we stand.

Does Neyer know something we don't
Vic (Detroit, MI): Are there multiple candidates for AL Rookie of the Year, or is it just a two man race between Papelbon and Verlander?

Rob Neyer: (1:37 PM ET ) Probably, though some hitter (Nick Markakis? Daric Barton?) might make a summer push. And I'd throw Francisco Liriano into the mix, too.

Notes re PlunkBonds...
But getting back to Springer, some say he was just trying to pitch inside, and some say he's got something against Bonds, but isn't it possible he was just trying to elevate Houston back to a tie with the Cubs and Padres for most times hitting Barry Bonds with a pitch (10)?
