A's get Karsay

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/scorecard/mlbnews.asp?articleID=166568

"The Cleveland Indians sent pitcher Steve Karsay to the Oakland A's in exchange for an undisclosed amount of cash on Sunday."
I guess....this is good for a temporary fix.  All these injuries are still making my head spin though.

Lets Go A's.

Money
Karsay apparently is making 6.5 mil this season.  I wonder if we're GETTING the cash or giving it.  Either way...you want to see a commitment to winning?  This is it, fellas.

Surprised this hasn't gotten more talk yet...

Cash
I'm going to guess that we're not paying much of that salary. The Indians certainly didn't want him, and would likely take whatever amount of cash from us to take him off their hands.

I guess this means
the A's agreed to take Karsay off their hands and contribute something to his salary...

by OaklandSi on May 14, 2006 8:31 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Karsay is making $6?
Are you sure? I thought he was released, then signed to a minor league deal by the Indians.

ESPN
Thats what his ESPN player card says.  Your comment makes more sense, though.

by SeanR on May 14, 2006 9:02 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

From what I can gather
He was DFA'd then released by the Yankees.

Picked up by the Rangers.

Rangers declined Arbitration and released him.

Signed to Minor League Deal by the Indians.

So my guess is that ESPN has his 2005 salary when he was with the Yankees listed.

If you DFA somebody,
and nobody selects you within 10 days, I think you're on the hook for their entire salary. A team that picks you up only pays a prorated part of the minimum salary.

there is real worry behind this move
Witasick out for nearly a month;

Duke on the DL;

Calero overused;

Street still not 100%;

Saarloos and Halsey in the rotation.

Agree, but ...
Street may be coming off an injury, but since he's come back, he's actually been pretty damn good. Calero's been fine and I think Witasick's supposed to come back soon.

Who Karsay replaces is the Duke. And I like the pickup. He's had a pretty solid relieving career and he started in Oakland. Probably a cheap pickup and I think it's a solid one.

Slide him into the 7th inning slot with Calero taking the 8th. I think it'll work out.

Good pickup.

by Crosbino on May 14, 2006 8:36 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't know
I think if he were considered to be "the Karsay of old," he wouldn't be traded for cash by a team with a weak bullpen.

I see the pickup as similar to Halsey, Yabu, and Witasick: cheap insurance at the back end of the roster. I wouldn't look for him to be part of the "close out games" crew unless the A's are truly desperate (like Street and/or Calero go down before Duke or Witasick return), or unless Karsay proves over time (like, a month) to be a lot better than the Indians seem to think he is.

Roster spot
The AP article says Karsay's expected to join the team in Oakland on Tuesday. So they'll need to clear a spot for him on the 40 man roster which already accounts for Watson departure. Candidates? Kaz Tadano perhaps? That 12.69 ERA and 10/6 SO/BB can't be helping his cause.

Tadano...
Is much cheaper and younger than Karsay.
You're kidding me, right?
Tadano is currently on the DL anyways.

where...
where are you getting this "terrible" as a starter information?
I don't think he's half that bad-- given the chance he actaully gets to start a few games in a row and get into a groove.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7316/career
He'd probably be better than LOIZA (ack).

I think having him in the pen would really help mix things up-- he's got some crazy pitches and a nomo windup.

I see Karsay's role ....
as an inning eater when we are far behind in games. A guy who can save Calero or Duke from having to pitch in a hopeless game.

I just threw up in my mouth
Don't mention Steve Sparks ever again.

Here's a proposed deal:
I won't mention Steve Sparks ever again if you won't mention throwing up in your mouth ever again.

Excellent point
no one remembers -- if the A's somehow hold the lead, Sparks is a hero.  It was a clutch, clutch performance that day ...

Karsay and Witasick now on the roster
I expect Huey Lewis to be doing the national anthem again soon and serenade Bonds with a rendition of "A Want a New Drug", one that won't show up on the test!

They activated Witasick?
He hasn't even done any rehab, has he? (Cue the Huey Lewis song again.)

LOL.
I just hope we're not singing "Happy to Be Stuck With You" when Karsay comes to town.

Damn. I was hoping for...
... New Drug by the Mutants, but it's a decade too early for the Karsay/Rickey trade.  Cues old 7" and waxes nostalgic.

For the record
Karsay signed a minor league contract with Cleveland 12/05. Vets who sign minor league deals generally include language that stipulates their salary IF they make a major league roster. Karsay's includes a $600 K base with incentives that could push it to $1.7 million if he makes 68 appearances in the Show.

Q. Why only 68?
A. Because if you make 69, you have to go down (to the minors).

Yeah, that's the ticket..

no no no, Karsay is making $600, 000,
minor leaguers don't have $6 mil deals.
